Austria in January?

Hello everyone,

Planning a last minute trip, but unfortunately my companion and I are only available in early January. Austria has always been foremost in my mind because of the culture, history and the breathtaking sceneries. I would love to visit the palaces and gardens. And Sound of Music is my all time favorite so I would have to do that tour as well! Questions: (1) Weather wise, is this an advisable time to go? I understand it can be bitterly cold (and snowing) but being that we are don%26#39;t have much flexibility in dates, is it still doable to appreciate and enjoy the sights? (2) Also, I am trying out different package options since I might incorporate other cities like Prague or Venice in my itinerary, so I may end up just staying in one Austrian city, and doinga side trip to the other - (thinking of staying in Vienna and side trip to Salzburg). Is this worth it, though? I%26#39;m afraid I can%26#39;t do justice to either by just spending a day.

I appreciate anyone%26#39;s comments. I%26#39;m new to the forum but I%26#39;ve enjoyed reading posts and forums here. A wealth of information!

Yes, weather in January can be very cold and there will be probably snow as well. But this can also offer a special atmosphere!

In Vienna I would spend at least 2-3 full days and in Salzburg 2 says as you mentioned the Sound of Music tour which would bring you to the Salzkammergut area as a day trip.

You could even stay f.e. at the lake Wolfgangsee for a night (very romantic):

Or at the lake Fuschl in the Hotel Castle of Fuschl:
