Untesberg Cable Car

I am visiting Salzburg on the 19th December and along with

the markets want to go up Untersberg via the cable car. Having trawled through previous threads here I have found the Untersberg web site that says the cable car opens from 15 December but other TA posts I have seen suggests that it may be closed in Winter because the top may be dangerous - which is right ?.

I have also found the 25 bus that goes to Grodig from the city - is there a bus that comes from the Hallein area where we will be staying

we went in early December last year and it was open, and we took a ride to the top, that was covered in snow.

There%26#39;s a nice cafe at the top but remember to take appropriate clothing, it was proper winter up there!

According to the website the Untersberg cable car is open. From 15th December the opening times change: It is then open from 9.00am until 4.00pm. The views are spectacular on a clear day and there are a couple of cafes at the top. I must stress that this is a mountain and as such can be dangerous. As long as you wear suitable clothing and shoes, and stick absolutely to the worn paths through the snow, you should be fine. Do not deviate from the paths!!!! Even in the summer, when there is no snow, the paths can be tricky. Walking poles are particularly useful up there, even if you only use one. So be careful and enjoy the wonderful views.

The cable car ride itself is fantastic (about fifteen minutes) and the views over towards the alps are wonderful.

I%26#39;m not sure about the buses. Hallein to St Leonard (where the cable car goes from) is only about four miles along the B159 (with a short distance on the L104) so it might be an idea to get a taxi. Afterwards you could get the 25 bus into Salzburg and see the Christmas Markets before getting the bus back to Hallein.

Yes, the No. 25 goes from the main station via the city centre; Hellbrunn; Anif and on to the Untersberg cable car.
