HI,
I have a last minute trip to Salzburg this weekend.
Could someone advise on some good places to stay, and things we must see.
Also what is the weather like at the moment?
I am guessing I will need to bring my wooly hat :)

Hello, yes, the weather is very cold in Austria at the moment so wear layers. I recommend you stay in the old city or as close to it as possible. Hotels in the old city include:
Hotel Weisse Taube
Hotel Elefant
Hotel Zur Goldene Ente
Hotel am Dom
If you look in the review section of this site you%26#39;ll see reviews of them. Just over the river, on Linzergasse, is Hotel Stadtkrug.
November is a bit of a transition month in Salzburg. The Christmas markets will not be open until 23rd but they are currently being set up in Residenzplatz and Domplatz. Likewise the ice rink is under construction in Mozartplatz (this might be open by the time you get there). A trip up to the fortress is a must (take the funicular) as the views from both the north and south side are wonderful. The cathedral (Dom) is always worth a visit as it is so beautiful. St Peter%26#39;s cemetery is lovely too as people decorate the graves for advent.
It%26#39;s difficult to know what to recommend as everyone%26#39;s taste is different but there are museums, galleries, the Mozart houses, etc. If you wanted to see a lot of the tourist sights it would be an idea to get a Salzburg card (available from the tourist office in Mozartplatz):

Salzburg is a small city so once in the old town all the sights are close together. A short busride away (15 minutes) is Schloss Hellbrunn. This is a lovely 17th century palace. The Salzburg zoo is located there. A bit further by bus is the Untersberg mountain and you can take the cable car to the top for panoramic views of the mountains and city. Care must be taken at the top, especially in the snow. There are a couple of cafes at the top.
In the city the Monchsberg lift takes you to the museum of modern art. Whether you visit the museum or not the views of the city from here are lovely and you can walk on the Monchsberg right round to the fortress. Across the river is Mirabelgarten (of Sound of Music fame) and the Mozart%26#39;s house on Makartplatz. All these sights are within a few minutes walk of each other.
There are various excursions available in Salzburg such as The Sound of Music tour and trips to Berchtesgaden, just over the border in Bavaria. You%26#39;ll find details of these in the tourist office.
Have a great time, don%26#39;t forget your hat and gloves.

Thanks so much for this information.
Do you know of anything a little cheaper in the old town?
Thanks again

I am also going to Salzburg this weekend - Sat - Mon...
I heard the YoHo Youth Hostel is very affordable!

I would recommend Hotel Friesacher:
it is located in an upscale suburb with good pubic transport for going into town and it offers more relaxation than staying in the city center which will be busy and crowded with tourists at this time of the year:

I had an email today from the hotel we are staying at next weekend that finished with
%26quot;With kind regards from the snow-coverd lake fuschl%26quot; if that helps answer what the current weather is like.
