appreciate any suggestions for train vs. bus for wife, adult daughter and i next may trip between these two cities. thx.

I don%26#39;t know if there%26#39;s a bus service... the usual way to travel in Europe (beside the car) is by train (much more comfortable, more space, usually faster and more environment friendly than a coach).
The fastest train does it with one easy change at Maribor in 5:41 hours... just have a look at

At the moment, it%26#39;s not possible to buy the ticket online... you have to contact ÖBB either by phone or E-mail.

... and usually it%26#39;s no problem to buy just before you go (as only trains with the information %26quot;Subject to compulsory reservation%26quot; can sell out), definately no problem to buy a day or two in advance.
