Bargain and tourist shopping

Are there %26quot;bargain%26quot; places to shop in Vienna? For example, in the States, there are places that are known for discount shopping--still good quality but at great prices. Sometimes there are stores that carry seasonal closeouts at super low prices.

With the strength of the Euro against the dollar, will clothes be more expensive there than in the States? (I have two teenage daughters who love clothes, shoes and purses--but we don%26#39;t shop at department store prices.)

Are there any products that Vienna or Austria are famous for that we want to see about purchasing while we are there? Are there typical items that people bring back to friends as souvenirs of Austria? Foods, chocolate, lace, crystal, beauty products, jewelry, Christmas decorations, and so forth?

For example, we bought a crystal chandelier and crystal decorations at great prices in the Czech Republic. And in China they had jade, rugs and silk.

Vienna is not really a city for bargain shopping. The strength of the Euro against the dollar means that any branded item identical to what you could buy in the States will be more expensive in Vienna. We were in California in August and in Vienna earlier in the year and there was no comparison in prices. There will, however, be some brands and items that you simply can%26#39;t get in the States and you may consider them a bargain.

There is an Outlet Mall some distance from Vienna which you can read details of access to at this post:

but even there prices will be more than at American Outlet Malls.

One exception may be to shop at Vienna%26#39;s venerable auction house The Dorotheum

and the many antique shops in the streets around. Items bought there will probably be cheaper than in the States, but you may have to factor in shipping and import duties.

The list of items you suggest may well be very different from those you%26#39;d get back home which could make them a tempting buy - just don%26#39;t expect them to be cheap!

Good advice from Norman:

Quality products found in Austria are not inexpensive. I doubt that you will find %26quot; seasonal closeouts %26quot; during the Holiday period.

ost winter sales will not begin until the middle of January and are limited.

Numerous souvenir shops can be found to purchase the usual tourist items- many like to buy the Mozart candy to take home to friends.

If you go to the Christmas markets you will find many small and unique gifts - straw and hand painted christmas decorations, wooden toys , various wine and distilled products ,ceramic items etc.

The Dorotheum in addition to auctions has several rooms of items for direct sale- everything from good jewellry, watches, paintings to antiques silver, china etc. often at very good prices.

One room on the main floor and another larger area on the second floor.

Many like the loden clothing available in many shops in Vienna - ( example Loden Plankl on Michaelerplatz )good for winter and lasts forever.

Enamel jewellry at Frey Willy also a nice thing - one shop behind Stephansdom another near to the Albertina.
