Vertical and Fritz may we have recommendations for the best stands and perhaps you might give the uneducated posters a brief description of what Punsch is.
Vertical,
You intrigue me. Do you perhaps have a dog that likes Punsch?

My personal favorite is STROZZIS GLÜHWEINSTAND on the market in the Altes AKH, very nice mixture, very friendly service, and always a good spirit ...
Generally speaking, %26quot;punsch%26quot; is a warm, alcoholic drink, that originally comes from India, and is made out of Arrak, a sweet brandy destilled out of brown sugar, sugar, lemons, water and tea. The modern receipe, as you will mostly find it in Vienna, consists of tea, austrian rum, a little bit of red wine, hopefully not too much water and lots of spices like ciannamon and similar stuff. To add a bit of fruity taste, one adds chopped pieces of ornages, which have been marinated with rum and sugar the night before. This makes the traditional punsch, but there are hundreds of variations to this, with one of the most popular beeing %26quot;Beerenpunsch%26quot;, in which the chopped oranges are substituted by a mixture of red berries, sugar and rum.
%26quot;Glühwein%26quot; is a form of mulled wine, main component is red wine, on to which you add loads of sugar, cinnamon sticks and clover, and give the whole thing a bit of a push by adding some rum, but not too much.
If you habe never tried it before, start with Glühwein, because the punch is much sweeter, and you couldn´t taste anything about the vine afterwards. In both cases, the quality of the drink depends on two factors: The quality of the raw materials, thats were it most likely goes wrong if it goes wrong, you can feel if it was cheap wine and rum, but only on the day after ... and the second factor is the carefull cooking, if the mixture is too cold, the spices don´t free their scents and tastes, but if it starts cooking during the process, the whole alcohol disappears ...

I have never been a glühwein fan and much prefer punsch.
Almost as many recipes for punsch as Punsch stands in Vienna.
Everyone has their own favorites - many are used as a meeting place after working or shopping. Each has their own favorite version of Punsch.
You can get everything from %26quot;Kinder Punsch%26quot;- no alcohol to %26quot;Turbo Punsch %26quot; extra alcohol added to the normal punsch after it is ready for you.
Basic ingredients - all have their special amounts of each
wine, sugar , rum or brandy, tea, orange or other citrus, cloves , cinnamon
some recipes include raisins or like .
It is served very hot and can quickly be absorbed into your body. thus one must drink carefully , but it is really good to warm you in the cold late afternoon or early evening.
Numerous stands on Freyung are now my favorite places - especially the one run by the hospital. The atmosphere of the Christmas Market adds to the drink.
Many gather in these places to enjoy friendship and a good time.
The places on Graben are good too and the money earned there by the service organizations goes to help their causes.
Much more on this subject can be found by entering punsch in the search box.
Hello
Operettaman - I send you a private message.

Some people say, the fun is not in drinking the perfect cup of the hot stuff - but in finding it ! :-) But vertical is right, its dangerous stuff when you are not used to it, its about double to triple the strenght of normal wine, and each cup holds about the content of a big wineglass, and due to the warmth and the high content of sugar, the alcohol is absorbed into the blood and into the brain much quicker then normally ... But some say, its only a matter of training, my personal record-holder had 17 cups .. before he needed our ambulance .... when we later enterd the A %26amp; E room in which they pumped out his stomach, again with another patient, the whole ward had a kind of christmas smell .... :-)

Alles ist klar.

I raise my hand for Gluehwein, especially the red one.
There are different taste and qualities of punch out there
but I never found a bad red Gluehwein.
So try yourself

I prefer Punsch - and my favorite Christmas market are the ones in Spittelberg and in Schoenbrunn.

I%26#39;m one of those few people that make a special trip (one of three or four each year to Vienna) specially to top up on Punch and Nuts. See you in two weeks!
My favourite stalls?
I use to like the one at the top of Kohlmarkt. It use to have a lovely looking and very polite Viennese girls with little sign saying %26quot;mit schuss%26quot;. Then the stall changed hands and the punch wasn%26#39;t so nice - and the punch option changed (!) to Turbo Punch. Then it changed hands again I think. Now not so good.
There%26#39;s a lovely punch stall in the center of Freyung that seems more interested in Tea than punch but serves Punch with an orange Schuss. On the other side of the road is another stall and mrs UK2 tells me that the design student on ORF the other night who helped design the new huts looks like the student running the stall.
The best erdbeeren stall is at the top of Rathausplatz (top right if looking at Rathaus) and they specialise in their own brew. You get a spoon for the berries and can choose strawberries or cherries.
I use to stay at Sacher Appartments that overlooked Stephansplatz and would sit at the window waiting for them to push back the doors of the large punch hut in front of the cathedral and as soon as it opened - I%26#39;d be down in the lift like speedo. Now it%26#39;s gone. Evidently the church doesn%26#39;t like Punch! Very sad.
There are some nice stalls at Schonbrun - one in particular does a generous Ameretto punch.
I like many at Spittelberg but since they thinned the huts at Karlsplatz and Spittelberg to pad out the new area in front of the museum and art gallery - both areas have lost a little atmosphere.
Anyway this all goes to prove how sad we are - but we%26#39;ve looked forward to our winter visit every year for the last 15 years almost as much as our first visit to the Swiss House for our first spring Stelze.
I encourage anyone going to Vienna over the next month or so to linger a while longer at some punch stalls.
