Vegetarian in Vienna?

I%26#39;m going to be traveling to Vienna on the 17th from Budapest with my girlfriend from the U.S. who is a vegetarian.

Can you recommend any good vegetarian restaurants? If not, are the cooks accommodating?

What is the best /frugal way to travel?

Will I be able to stop by Salzburg on the way and then get back on a train to Vienna? What would you recommend to see if I am only there for half a day?

Would you recommend the Römertherme spa if I am only in the city for 3 days?

How would I get there and is it easy to get around?

I wanted to see The Lipizzans%26#39; morning exercise, would tickets for these still be available? I wasn%26#39;t able to see where to book them online at their web site.

Thanks!

Between Budpaest, Vienna and salzburg, I would take trains, frequent connections, always going mostly city center to city center, and timewise there is no sense in taking flights.

Yes, you could do a daytour to Salzburg by train, there are plentzy of direct trains going, but it looks like you are aiming at a bit of a tight schedule.

Train information: www.oebb.at

For recomm. on a programm for salzburg, I suggest you post on the %26quot;Salzburg%26quot; forum.

Römertherme: Yes, of course you could go there, but be reminded that if you want any relaxing effect from it, you should plan at least a day for it, starting from Vienna. You can take a little commuter train there, the %26quot;Badner Bahn%26quot;, it starts in Vienna across the road from the opera, its about 1h15min to go there.

http://www.roemertherme.at/english/

According to the Spanisch Ridng school webpage, there is no online booking for the morning exercise:

The Center now indroduces a new shuttle bus service on Fridays and Saturdays - 5 euro round trip.

They are closed Sundays.

Bus leaves numerous times daily from Operngasse 4-6 - just across from the State Opera.

friends in vienna

Dear friends from Vienna ,we are a couple from Romania who

wants to spend few nights at Stadthalle Hotel near Westbahnhof.

Can you tell us more things about the hotel and about the area ?

Is a quiet and a safe place ?

Thank you.

It is not the nicest area of town, but not unsafe - you have to be cautious to some extent everywhere in a city. Of course it would be much nicer staing in the 1st district or in the districts 6 - 9.

how to get from vienna to salzburg by train

Hi, we%26#39;ll arrive to Vienna but our last destination is Bad Hofgastein.

can u help us and say how can we get there? may be give us some links....

and the main problem...it%26#39;ll be night (((

|||

You can go there by train in about 4 hours with one change of train via either Salzburg or Villach.

But the last convenient connection leaves in Vienna at 6:20pm.

If you arrive later I would stay in Vienna overnight and take a train in the morning.

Look here for more schedule info:

oebb.at/pv/…index.jsp

|||

Why don´t you fly to Salzburg? Much shorter transfer to Bad Hofgastein!

|||

you r write but there are no flights on these period(((

so...if we arrive at 10.00 pm we need to wait for the morning, isn%26#39;t it????

|||

Thinking about coming to Vienna in February...HELP!

I am thinking about coming to Vienna in mid-February. My mom has a conference there for 5 days. I was thinking about coming 2 days earlier so we could have 2 full days to explore together and then she would have her conference and I%26#39;d have 5 days to explore by myself. We were thinking about taking a direct flight on Austrian from NYC.

Whats the weather like in February (I am originally from Finland, so maybe that%26#39;s a stupid question)? Will I have enough to do for a full week?

What are the absolute top attractions, must sees?(I love culture, museums, art etc, I am easy to please)

Thanks to all of you for your responses!!!

|||

I also noticed that Budapest isnt very far from Vienna...any information on a day trip to Budapest would be appreciated (trains, how long does it take, cost etc) Thanks!

|||

It would be a great idea to come to Vienna as this city offers a lot - the direct flight with Austrian is very convenient.

For going to Budapest you can take the train from Vienna Suedbahnhof station - for schedule info look here:

http://www.oebb.at/en/index.jsp

The journey would take you about 2:50 hours and there are also direct connections.

About the weather:

It might be cold in february, but you never know exactly how it will be like - but it will not be as cold as in Finland;).

|||

...and you could make a day trip by train to the beautiful town of Salzburg as well:

2:37 hours duration

http://www2.salzburg.info/

|||

Thank you for the info. Looks like Vienna is VERY central in terms of other cities. Budapest, Prague and other cities seem near. I think I will try to plan 2 day trips. Possibly one to Budapest and one somewhere else. All I have to do now is book the flights and hotel. Any recommendations on a central hotel? I am not sure where the conference will be, but I assume public transport is a viable option to get around. Is Vienna a walkable city? Any central hotel recommendations would be great.

|||

Yes, Vienna is a city which is very walkable and has a very good public transport system as well.

I do not know which type of hotel you are looking for, but here are some options:

Thanks for your input...I will consult with my mom about the hotel. But looks like I am pretty set on coming to visit your beautiful city in February!

|||

Look here for info:

I am sure you will like Vienna!

|||

Look to their website

it will offer performance dates and also workout days -

You can also see the horses as they pass close by -on the street between their stable and the Hofburg Riding School performance area. many do this for some great photos.

Booked my trip to Vienna for Feb. 21-28, I am SO excited. Any helpful tips would be much appreciated!

Restaurants?

We are going to be in Vienna at the beginning of December. We need advice about where to have dinner on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. (Where doing a He ringer evening on Friday.) We would like to have something better than the Viennese equivalent of pub grub, however, given the continuing decline of the dollar we need to be cost conscious. Can anyone offer some recommendations? Thanks.

|||

Some options:

%26quot;Oesterreicher im MAK%26quot;

http://www.oesterreicherimmak.at/

%26quot;Ella´s%26quot;

www.ellas.at/cgi-bin/TCgi.cgi…

%26quot;Stadtwirt%26quot; - in the 3rd district (very close to the first)

Untere Viaduktgasse 45

http://www.stadtwirt.at/html/inde_.html (only in German)

%26quot;Glacisbeisl%26quot; - in the Museumsquartier

http://www.glacisbeisl.at/

%26quot;Da Capo%26quot; (italian):

lokaltipp.at/jsp-content/…

|||

I forget to mention that we will be staying near St. Stephen%26#39;s

|||

All of the above mentioned restaurants are walkable!

|||

Try Plachutta - 10 minutes from St Stephens. Not cheap but a meal with wine for 2 shouldn%26#39;t be more than about 60 euros. great food. Might need to book for Saturday or Sunday. Any hotel can help and direct you.

|||

Did you mean a Heuriger evening? If so, don%26#39;t go to Grinzing, try Nussdorf, Stammersdorf, or Sievering. For a good meal try the Witwe Bolte or Spatzennest in the Spittleberg area.

|||

There are quite a few nice restaurants in the 1st district that are not that expensive. Some even have nice set menus at lunchtime during the week for reasonable prices. Here are some suggestions:

Jonathan and Sieglinde

1010 Vienna, Riemergasse 16

http://www.jonathan-sieglinde.com

All of the dishes are made with either apples or potatoes and very good.

If you want good indian food go to:

Nirvana

1010 Wien, Rotenturmstraße 16-18

http://www.restaurant-nirvana.at

A bit rustic but also open on Sunday (the others are closed)

Bettelstudent

1010 Wien, Johannesgasse 12

http://www.bettelstudent.at

Right behind the Stephansplatz there is the Cafe Diglas

A typical Viennese Coffeehouse that also serves good warm meals and is also open on Sundays.

Cafe Diglas

1010 Wien, Wollzeile 10

http://www.diglas.at

Enjoy!

|||

Thank you all for your recommendations.

Hiking & Cave Tours in the fall

My husband and I are planning a trip to Austria next fall, and we are definitely interested in doing some day hikes in the Alps while we are there. We haven%26#39;t thought through locations yet, but I was wondering if anyone generally knew when the best times to go for hiking, and also for cave tours. Is mid to late October too late (e.g., too cold, possibly snow)? Should we be aiming for late September/early October instead?

Thanks!

|||

Definately early September!

|||

Many thanks!! As I can%26#39;t go in early September (because of my work schedule), I%26#39;m now going to revise my plans for possibly going in late August!!

|||

We did a day hiking vacation through some of the Bavaria and Tirol Alps for almost three weeks in September this year. It started with Garmisch-Partenkirchen on September 6th, with cold, rainy weather. When the clouds lifted the next day, the snow line was down to a level just above the town (snow down to approx. 900 to 1000m elevation). With warmer weather, it melted over the next few days, but it made for wet conditions and we limited our hikes to lower elevations for a few days. We had nice weather, and no more snow, through the rest of our holiday.

I was struck by how similar the weather in the Alps is is to where I live in the Rockies at home (even though home is at higher elevation and further north), and based on our experience, and my knowledge of fall weather %26amp; hiking at home, I would say that October would be pushing it.

SuitableHotel

My husand and I are coming to Vienna next weekend. We will stay Friday, Saturday %26amp; Sunday nights and are looking for somewhere to stay. We would like somewhere with easy transport to the football as he will be watching the football match on Friday. We%26#39;d like somewhere central to the sightseeing and places to eat %26amp; drink for Saturday %26amp; Sunday. I%26#39;d like somewhere with it%26#39;s own bar and maybe restaurant as I%26#39;ll be by myself probably on Friday night and I won%26#39;t want to go out and about by myself. Hope someone can help. Many thanks. Alfmeister.

|||

You can choose any hotel in the old town / Inner Stadt, as the stadium has very good reinforced public transport connections on match days from Schwedenplatz and Praterstern underground stations.

If you are searching for a hotel thats really near the staium, the selection isn´t too big:

Vienna Hilton Danube **** (this has a bar and a nice restaurant, but rest of public transport connections are a bit poor and hotel is far off the center)

Austria Trend Hotel Wiener Messe ***

IBIS Wien Messe *** (both in an a bit dodgy location)

The following hotels are nearer to the center, and already along or near to the same tramline that goes to the stadium:

MERCURE WIEN CITY *** to ****

MERCURE IMLAUER*** to ****

AUSTRIA CLASSIC HOTEL NORDBAHN ***

CITY HOTEL TABOR (not sure aboutr category)

Hotel CITY CENTRAL ****

Hotel KUNSTHOF ***

Hotel STEFANIE**** (has a restaurant)

Pls. check the reviews section for commets, I am onlöy listing them here without evaluation, I don´t think they will all have a restaurant, but I am sure the reception staff will be able to advise you about a nice place where you can dine by yourself without any problems, Vienna is a very respectfull town towards females travellers, at least thats what I have been told !

|||

Maybe you would like the Marriott as it is centrally located in the 1st district and they have their own sports bar to watch games - Champions Bar.

marriott.com/hotels/…

http://www.champions.at/index.php

|||

I think Fritz%26#39;s advice about the first district is sound. Your husband will have good transport links to the football, you will be very central for sightseeing and the hotel will probably have its own restaurant or there%26#39;ll be one on the same block.

There will be a myriad of restaurants for you to choose from within walking distance of any hotel in the first district. But if your reluctance to go out alone is based on your experiences of UK cities then you%26#39;re in for a very pleasant surprise. Vienna is one of the safest cities in Europe and doesn%26#39;t have the culture prevalent in much of the UK that any girl on her own is %26quot;fair game%26quot;.

|||

Especially on this night you are aiming at, the city will be geared up with police all over the town to its max., as the local emergency forces see this as the last big test before the Euro 2008. So, preassuming everything aroudn the game stays cool, you should have a wonderfull evening even by yourself, and it will be guarded by hundreds of Viennas hopefully friendly police-officers at every corner of the city ....:-)

Greets, Fritz

P.S.: Whats your husbands bet on the result ? Things didn´t go too well for England the last few weeks, and we were successfull against Ivory coast, so I say I wouldn´t be surprised if its draw !

|||

I would suggest Nordbahn hotel. We stayed there 2 times with our children. The hotel is very clean, has a good buffet breakfast and the staff are very helpful. It is very central just two stops by the U-Bahn to Stephanplatz. Near the hotel there restaurants where you can eat and the area is very safe.

|||

Thanks for your help everyone. We have settled on the Starlight Suiten Salgries as it seemed central and was a good price.

I would like to see the Christmas Markets while we are in Vienna to take a few small presents home but I think we will be there a little bit early. Are there any Christmas Markets that will be open 17th %26amp; 18th November do you know?

How cold is Vienna at the moment?

Fritz - my husband says 3-1 to Austria but I think he may have been joking! Or maybe not since Rooney is injured. We%26#39;ll see.

I%26#39;ll write up a report whenI get back. It%26#39;s my 40th birthday whilst in Vienna so I hope it will be a good one.

Regards.

Wendy

|||

Vienna is cold but still nice at the moment, we had a little bit of snow yesterday in Vienna, but this morning its fairly clear, only a few clouds, sun is coming through nicely, and its supposed to go up to 10° Celsius during the day. But I was out %26amp; about last night, and the evenings are getting fairly chilly already ....

The hotel is not bad, its right in Viennas going out area, the %26quot;Bermudadreieck%26quot;, could be a bit noisy, depending on the windows, but I assume they have taken care of that. Its central, the big public transport hub of %26quot;Schwedenplatz%26quot; is just about 5 minutes walking from there, and thats also where the trams to the stadium are leaving for your husband.

This is a very nice cocktail bar just across the road from your hotel:

http://www.dinos.at/ , their strawberry daiquiri is to die for !

%26quot;Planters Club%26quot; Cocktail bar, and the adjoining restaurant %26quot;Livingstone%26quot; could also be very nice for a dinner, but check for reviews, I have never dined there myself:

http://www.plantersclub.com/set.htm

The webpage is in german, but on the restaurant page, the winelist and menue are in both languages.

I am an optimist, but 3:1 ? I would be happy about a draw, 1:1 or a 2:2 again just like in 2004 ! :-)

Greets, Fritz

|||

Thanks Fritz. Does that translate as Bermuda Triangle? If so, it%26#39;s mentioned in the England Football Fans information for the match. We%26#39;ve requested a quiet room so we%26#39;ll see what we get. Thanks for tip on the Daquiri I%26#39;ll try and get in there and treat myself. I%26#39;d usually go for wine but I%26#39;ll have a cocktail or 2 for my birthday.

Regards.

Wendy

Yes, thats the Bermuda triangle ! any havewent there and never returned ... :-)

European Adventure

I am planning a trip to Dublin and then from Dublin will fly to Prague. I would like to fit in some skiing. A friend had recommended Selva Gardenia in Italy but I thought it may be easier and cheaper to fly to Austria? Can you recommend a good place to ski in Austria? We are Int/Advanced Skiiers and we are looking for reasonable and affordable accommodations and def. good apres/nightlife.

|||

The area near to Salzburg is probably well suited for travel from Dublin and then onward to Prague.

Look to this website to describe Obertauern - not far from Salzburg -

www.obertauern.at

cheap flights available from Dublin to Salzburg - then about a 1 hour transfer to this nice resort.

Higher altitude insures good snow conditions - great ski circus for all levels of ability-

good selection of hotels in all price categories and a good apre ski and night life

Much easier to reach than Gardena

|||

Hello! I am traveling from Dublin to Prague and from Prague I am trying to decide between traveling to Berlin or Vienna.

Would you recommend one city over another?

|||

I prefer Vienna to Berlin!

As you prefer good nightlife in a skiing resort:

- Ischgl

http://www.ischgl.com/en-index.htm

http://www.ischgl.com/en-silvretta-arena.htm

www.ischgl.com/en-silvretta-arena-slopes.htm

- Kitzbuehel

a posh place in the Austrian mountains (the Aspen of Austria), very cute town with excellent nightlife; the only negative is, that it is located on lower elevation, so that snow is not guaranteed:

www.kitzbuehel.com/en/content.asp?ID=244

http://www.bergbahn-kitzbuehel.at/en/

- St. Anton/ Arlberg:

www.stantonamarlberg.com/winter/ViewPage.asp…

|||

Zakopane anyone ? polish ski-resort in the Tatra mountains between Chech Republic and Poland. Not so far from Prague. (not been there)

|||

Thank you! I am trying to figure out the most efficient and more affordable travel options. I looked at flights from Dublin to Salzburg and they seem to be more expensive than if I were to fly from Dublin to Prague or Dublin to Vienna.

So from Prague would it be best to travel to Vienna by train stay a few days and then to Obertraeun for a few days and fly home from Salzburg to NY?

Or is it best to fly into Vienna from Dublin and then train to Salzburg to Obertraeun and from there what%26#39;s the best way to get to Prague?

|||

This is the better plan:

So from Prague would it be best to travel to Vienna by train stay a few days and then to Obertrauern for a few days and fly home from Salzburg to NY?

Hotel Query...Travellling with a 1 year Old

Really hope you can help with another accomodation query.

We are travelling to Vienna just before Christmas and will be travelling with our 1 year old. I am looking for a hotel that has a really good breakfast/decent sized rooms/local restaurants but also really centrally located where we can walk most places (Christmas Markets included, am thinking travelling on Metro/Trams with a pram might be difficult?).

I am thinking of either the K+K Hotel Maria Theresia (not in 1010) or Le Méridien Vienna (which is but the breakfast isnt great) as they both recieved great reivews and are modern hotels,which appeals to me.

Do you think I should choose one of these, or would you have a better suggestion?

Many thanks in advance.

Both hotels you mentioned are good ones - other options (although I do not know your budget):

http://www.hollmann-beletage.at/

http://www.jjwhotels.com/en/grandhotelwien/

sacher.com/sacher/…index_en.jsp

all of them are in central location of 1st district and offer best standard and breakfast! Many restaurants nearby as well.

|||

Thanks for the information.

The Hollage looks like a great option and they have availability, think we may go for that!

Many thanks

|||

The Hollmann is really nice and in best location -

only 2 minues from the St. Stephan´s Cathedral or the tram stop for the lines 1-2 which circle the Ring and will take you f.e. directly to the Christmas Markets! Also only 2 minutes to the subway station for going to Schoenbrunn Castle.

It is no problem travelling by tram or subway with the baby.

Just opposite of the hotel there is a gourmet food market/supermarket where you can buy food and sandwiches as well as fruit, drinks, ...

Last minute trip to Salzburg

Hi

I have booked a trip for myself and my two boys aged 9 and 11 arriving Dec 19th for 3 nights

Can anyone recommend a nice central hotel not too expensive under 150 euros a night

We would like to go on one trip to the mountains - I see the caves are closed but what about Tobagganing. Could we go there and hire the clothes etc.

We are so excited can%26#39;t wait for the Markets etc

|||

Hello

A nice central hotel is Hotel Weisse Taube. Very close to the markets and quite reasonable. Another is Hotel Elefant. Both these hotels are within a few minutes walk from the two main markets in Residenzplatz and Domplatz. See the links:

www.weissetaube.at/index.php…

booking.com/hotel/…

I don%26#39;t know much about tobogganing but this site might help:

salzburgerland.com/eng/…direktlink.html

Today the Christmas market stalls have been put up in Residenzplatz. You can see what is happening on the webcams:

www.panoramablick.com/index.php…

It%26#39;s dark at the moment but you%26#39;ll be able to take a look tomorrow.

Have a great trip. Salzburg is completely magical during the Advent season, but wrap up warm!

Liz.

|||

thank you very Liz. That is very helpful

|||

If you have no joy with the hotels come back and I%26#39;ll think of some others.

Your boys will love the fortress so make sure you take a trip up there. You can take the funicular to the top. There%26#39;s all sorts to see up there and the views are great. There is sometimes another market in the courtyard.

A short busride (No. 25) away is Schloss Hellbrunn. There is a smaller market there during the afternoons. Last year they had a lovely petting zoo and real reindeer. Salzburg zoo is also at Hellbrunn and well worth a visit.

If you like Pizza, Da Pippo is a nice restaurant on Altermarkt. It is on the first floor with nice views from the windows. It%26#39;s also very reasonably priced.

Dinner and a concert in mid-November??

I%26#39;ll be in Salzburg Nov 14-16 (Wed-Fri) and would like recommendations for a nice dinner and concert.

I realize that we are picking a bad time of the year to visit, but we hope to experience some of this beautiful city.

Thank you

|||

Hello, I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll enjoy Salzburg whatever time of year you visit.

You don%26#39;t mention what type of concert you%26#39;d like but the obvious one to receommend is the Mozart Dinner Concert at Stiftskeller St Peter. This is the oldest inn in Europe, dating back to the year 803. The room where the dinner/concert is held is a beautiful baroque room and the musicians and singers are in 18th century costume. The music and singing is performed between courses.

This is definitely an occasion packaged for tourists but it is a lovely evening, in beautiful surroundings. We booked on-line and were seated right at the front, next to the stage. We also dressed up smart as we felt the surroundings deserved the effort :-) Here is a link for you to follow:

salzburg-concerts.com/mdc/english/index.htm

|||

We took a day trip to Salzburg by train from Munich this month (October 15) and fell in love with the city. We think that you chose a wonderful time of year to visit...fewer tourists, and brisk, chilly weather to enjoy!

We talked to a native of Salzburg who felt that if you have to choose only one concert, you should go to the Hohensalzburg Fortress. He felt that the fortress grounds and the view of the city help to make it a good choice. You can combine the concert with a dinner that is served before the concert if you like.

Unfortunately for us, we didn%26#39;t have the time for either. We plan to go back to Salzburg, and enjoy the city at a more leisurely pace the next time...including several meals and a concert or two.

We found our Rick Steves%26#39; Germany %26amp; Austria tour guide book to be a valuable resource for all kinds of information about Salzburg...including a self-guided walk. It has lots of information about the types of concerts and quality of musicians found at several different venues. He also lists many restaurants of all types and prices that you might want to try. Use his book as a starting point, and explore on your own from there!

Enjoy your trip!

|||

That%26#39;s great news! I was worried that we would be going at a low season that wouldn%26#39;t have evening concerts.

I tried the calendar %26amp; tickets link off of the url that you mentioned, LizR, but that page isn%26#39;t working right now. I%26#39;ll try later.

ArizonaNative: Thanks. We plan to visit the fortress, but I didn%26#39;t know that they have a concert. I%26#39;ll try to find Steve%26#39;s book. His show on Salzburg was just on PBS....just to whett our appetite!

|||

Hello, here is another link to try for tickets:

http://www.polzer.com/english/

I have been to both the Fortress and the St Peter concerts. I have to say that although the room in the fortress is spectacular, with views over the city, the St Peter one was much better. At St Peters the singers really engaged with the audience. There were no singers at the Fortress, just a few musicians who looked extremely bored throughout. Also once you%26#39;re sitting down watching the event you can%26#39;t see the views from the window. At the fortress the meal is served separately, before the concert. At St Peters, with the music played between courses, there is a lovely atmosphere as you get chatting to other people on your table. You%26#39;re there for the evening and can relax.

There is another concert, at Schloss Mirabel, although there is no dinner included with this one. There should be details of this on the link above.

Whether you go to the St Peters concert or not it%26#39;s a nice place to eat - full of atmosphere. There are very many great restaurants in the Old City area. While you are sightseeing during the day you could read a few menus (displayed in the windows) and see what takes your fancy.

|||

Thanks LizR. I tried the polzer link, and it switched to German when I went to the ticket-ordering page. It does look like there are tickets available for Nov 14 %26amp; 15th. We would likely go one of those nights.

|||

Mozart at St.Peters is unique and totally worthwhile.

A visit to the Forttress is also a must. If so inclined, the walk

up to the fortress is interesting.

A much maligned visit that we thought was terrific, though corny,

was the Sound of Music Tour. Campy fun with interesting guides.

We went on a Panorama Tour, but many people prefer Bob%26#39;s Tours.

We did not buy the Salzburg Card, choosing to walk everywhere.It

is safe and clean. Even in season, there is no active night life.

We loooooved Salzburg..Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!!

|||

Thanks Stan!

Through a suggestion by Liz, I did book a reservation for the Mozart concert at St Peter%26#39;s. The Panorama website has pages that remain in English throught the checkout process.

We will take the Sound of Music tour. My daughter is too big a fan to let that one pass. Thanks for the endorsement.

We can%26#39;t wait to get there!

|||

I will also be visiting around these dates.

Can I ask why its a bad time to go?

Thanks

Driving without a GPS - manageable?

Hello everyone, we are planning to do some driving in Austria and a little bit of Germany. We may not be able to get a GPS unit from the car rental company... Can fellow travellers advise whether we will do fine if I only print out all the driving directions from viamichellin website? And we don%26#39;t understand German too, so not sure if we will have problem reading road signs?

Here is where we plan to go... Thanks for any advice! :)

Salzburg %26gt; Zell am See %26gt; Hall %26gt; Innsbruck %26gt; Fussen (Neuschwantein) %26gt; Lindau %26gt; Bregenz

|||

a good map will do as well. most of us older folks did okay with these for quite some time........

your routes are easy and the only value of a GPS unit would come into play when getting into or out of cities; there these things are amazing.

printing all routes on Mapquest or similar will also help quite a bit.

road signs are pretty international in Europe, so you should have no problem. check here for a quick study:

alltravelaustria.com/Austria/…Road_Signs.htm

|||

Hi originbaby,

I visited Austria last November and rented a car in Vienna and drove it to Salzburg and a few areas of the Salzkammergut. I did not rent a GPS but managed with printouts of directions (I used the website mappy.com). The main highways were a breeze, and all the signs were very clear and easy to understand (I am Indian and have a sparse knowledge of German).

It was a little difficult finding our way inside the city, however. Vienna, especially, was a maze of one-way streets. My guess is that you should be fine if you stick to these cities.

I am visiting again this year and am renting a car to drive to most of the places you are driving to :) but in December. A trip report/some driving tips once you are back would be most appreciated!

|||

Driving in Austria without GPS will not be a problem!

|||

Thanks for all the replies!

Which resort

There are 2 of us travelling to austria 23rd March 08 - 28th March 08. Can anyone tell me which is are the best resorts for nightlife and skiing. Also which resorts are reasonable priced to go out.

We are flying to munich and departing from Salzburg so a resort somewhere close to both (3hrs max) would be ideal. I heard Soll and St Anton are ideal but can someone confirm this

Cheers

Frazer

|||

Kitzbuehel should be closer than St Anton

|||

As you will be travelling in March there will be the problem with the lack of snow in those skiing resorts located on a lower elevation. Although Kitzbuehel is awesome in any respect, there is the high possibility that there is no snow in March.

St. Anton is the better choice concerning snow as it is located in the high mountains, but is is wuite far from Salzburg.

The closest skiing resort matching your criteria and with good chance of having snow is Obertauern:

http://www.obertauern.com/

Or you choose an area with a glacier nearby:

austria.info/xxl/…home.html

Like Zell am See, Sölden, ...

Another option, but also nearly as far away as St. Anton, but on a higher elevation is Ischgl:

http://www.ischgl.com/en-index.htm

|||

No sense in going to the naschmarkt on a Sunday, the market and everything around it is closed .... And you pass by Peterskirche automatically, when you walk down the Graben to the Kohlmarkt, its just to your right there ...

Greets, Fritz

|||

I wouldn%26#39;t trail all the way to the Danube Tower on a November morning. It%26#39;s not central and whilst the views are panoramic on a sunny, clear summer%26#39;s day you%26#39;d get a much more interesting view of the centre of the city from the towers of the Stephansdom (especially the tall steeple, but there are only steps to ascend that one).

Also the Wagner Postsparkasse building is at the bottom end of the Ring - not near the Linke Wienzeile or the Secession - so visit it when you go to the Stadtpark, but I%26#39;m not sure if it opens on a Saturday.

|||

I would switch Danube Tower and Naschmarkt as the Naschmarkt is closed on Sunday (as Fritz already mentioned) and Saturday is the best day for visiting this market. I would recommend going there for lunch!

Snow conditions in Oberau

Hi,

I%26#39;m going to Oberau this Christmas with my family and was wondering what the snow conditions are like for around that time? We%26#39;re hoping to get some skiing in although I hear the snow isn%26#39;t great at Christmas? We%26#39;re going on the 23rd for 4 days, if anyone has any info on skiing at that time, that would be great!

Thanks,

Katie

|||

Oberau is located in Germany...

but look here:

http://www.oberau.com/webcam_e.html#webcam

|||

Ther e is also an %26quot;Oberau%26quot; in Tirol, the highest village of the Wildschönau ski-region, south of Wörgl. You should be safe for snow there, here are some cams and a weather and snow report:

schatzbergbahn.at/content/…

Very nice region, I used to work there for a while !

Greets, Fritz

|||

Sorry, its not the highest place their, the tiny but lovely little village of Thierbach is s few hundred metres higher even, but thats really just a few huts, one old pub and a lovely little church ...

Greets, Fritz

|||

Sorry, did not find Oberau in the Tyrol...!

Just found out that skiwelt is open from this weekend (sat %26amp; sun) due to the heavy snowfalls. Only open weekends until early december when it will open fully. Great news! Might have a weekend away then! :-)

Salzburg and Vienna in 4 days

Hi,

Myself and partner are considering a %26#39;last minute%26#39; break to Austria around 30th November/1st December - 4th/5th December.

Originally we had just intended to fly into Salzburg and spend a few days but now feel that it would be a shame to not spend time in Vienna (perhaps having a night out.. meal etc...)

While we will visit historic sights etc we are more looking towards relaxing and taking in the stunning scenery (perhaps with walks etc) We would also like to visit the Salzkammergut area. Hopefully the weather will be good enough around this time.

Accomodation in Salzberg and Vienna should be easy enough for us to find. We will probably fly into Salzberg and fly out from Vienna - but are unsure of the best way to get between the two (we are open to perhaps a train journey and overnight stop?) and also how to split the time between the two?

Alternatively we may be willing just to spend time in Salzberg for the 4 days - is there enough to do in the surrounding area (to see the scenery etc...)

Or perhaps someone can suggest a better itinerary!

Many thanks,

Antony

|||

if you want to relax and enjoy the scenery you might be better off staying in Salzburg for the whole for days...

...but of course it is also worth visiting Vienna - especially with all the Christmas markets and this special atmosphere in the city at Christmas time.

For going from Salzburg to Vienna I would take the train - it is very easy and will take you 3:40 - 3:00 hours only (direct connection).

www.oebb.at

As your aim is relaxing, maybe you could spend 3 days in Salzburg (one day trip to the Salzkammergut, if the weather is ok) first and then leave on the 4th early morning for 1 night in Vienna and then fly out from Vienna. Although this is only a short stay for visiting Vienna, you could still get a good first impression and come back again another time!

Hotel recommendation for Salzburg:

Hotel Friesacher - it is located in an upscale suburb with good pubic transport for going into town and it offers more relaxation than staying in the city center which will be busy and crowded with tourists at this time of the year:

How to get opera tickets ?

Going to Vienna 21-28.2 and want to get tickets to an Opera, where can I purchase them? Thanks.

|||

well what i did was to call the vienna state opera for a ticket they told me to call back one month before the performance for a ticket - the phone number to call is 0114315131513. i am going to vienna in december and want to see wagners die walkurie december 21st so i have to call not earlier than november 21st for a ticket. there are ticket brokers in vienna but they add a commission to the ticket. i hope this information helps.

|||

wow no way to get tickets online? I am amazed...

|||

tripadvisor.com/Travel-g190454-d194164/Vienn…

Internet sales of tickets opens exactly one month ahead of the date of the performance. Unfortunately, the ordering is in German language only. I believe there is another thread with translations in the Vienna forum, try to search for it.

Otherwise, order by telephone one month ahead.

www.staatsoper.at

|||

Hi windvalley

You can book advance tickets online, but seats will only be assigned a month before the show.

Visit this URL www.staatsoper.at/Content.Node2/en/index.php, and click on %26quot;Internet ticket sales%26quot; on the right and it will take you to the culturall website from which you can look at the schedule and order advance tickets.

combined spa town with skiing

In February08, I%26#39;m going to Vienna - but want to take my family for a few days skiing - but essentially also want to find a ski resort (like Bad Gastein) with a Therme / Spa / Wellness centre. Bad Gastein is about 4 hours drive from Vienna - does anyone know of any good alternatives that are a little closer. - If not, what is the best recommendation (on a budget !) in Bad Gastein?

Thanks

|||

No, unfortunately Bad Gastein and Bad Hofgastein are the closest villages to Vienna, which combine spa%26amp;skiing.

Do not know about any accomodation, but you may have a look here:

www.gastein.com/en-accommodation-index.htm

There are not too many which offer this combination in Austria.

Another - but even further away - option is the AquaDome in Laengenfeld near Soelden in the Tyrol:

www.aqua-dome.at/xxl/_lang/en/index.html

www.soelden.com/main/EN/SD/WI/index.html

Not really a thermal spas, but wellness hotels in the mountains:

falkensteiner.com/en/hotels_resorts/hotel_wa…

falkensteiner.com/en/…hotel_carinzia.html

If you are interested in really nice thermal spas without skiing then I would recommend the area of Eastern Styria which is about a 2 hours drive from Vienna:

thermenland.at/2161_HU-Steirisches-Thermenla…

Bad Waltersdorf

www.badwaltersdorf.com/index.php…

Blumau

Loipersdorf

Bad Gleichenberg

www.bad-gleichenberg.at/index.cfm…

www.legenstein.at/index.cfm…

http://www.allmer-hotel.at/cms/allmer/

Another recommendation near Bad Gleichenberg would be the following:

Why not staying at the awesome Castle of Kapfenstein and driving to different spas. Bad Gleichenberg is f.e. only about 10 km away. This castle is romantic and located in a hill in the Styrian wine country with a beautiful view of the countryside. Food is just excellent too.

http://www.schloss-kapfenstein.at/

Bad Tatzmannsdorf in the Burgenland is nice too:

www.burgenlandtherme.at/index.php?id=48%26L=1

|||

I forgot Bad Kleinkirchheim - also good combination ski%26amp;spa:

There would be one more that comes into my mind, the %26quot;Panhans%26quot; on the Semmering, which is a little ski-resort just about an hour south of Vienna. The resort is not really big %26quot;only%26quot; 14km of slopes, but if you really just want to ski for a few days, it could be ok for you, but check for independent reviews of the hotel, I have never stayed there, and its a big place, a former big Grand Hotel, it was renovated a few years ago, but you might wann aget some opionions first:

panhans.at/hotel/…Hotel-Panhans.htm

I heard the hotel now has many Central %26amp; Eastern European guests, because it is not too far from the Austrian - Hungarian border, and the ski-resort gets very busy on weekends with Viennese ....

accomodation in St Anton/Ishgl

Can anyone recomend any accommodation in ishgl or St Anton that is REASONABLE priced and located near the resort centre,arriving 23 March 08 for 5 nights.

Frazer

|||

I stayed at the Hotel Maria Theresia in Ischgl. It is close central on the pedestrian Main Street. The ski-run that ends in the village is just opposite. 100 yards from the gondolas and center. 150 yards from the Kuhstall après-ski bar. Don%26#39;t take a room in the basement. (in the hotel I mean). Look up their web-site. Ischgl is more compact than St. Anton. Never stayed-over in St. Anton. End March is low season.

Bayern or Bavaria

Hello everyone.. I am planning to take a train from Munich to Salzburg in end Nov. I have read through several threads and understood that the cheapest ticket is the Bayern ticket Eur27 for 2-5 person.

Can I know if a Bavaria ticket means exactly the same thing?

|||

%26quot;Baynern%26quot; is German for the English %26quot;Bavaria%26quot;. So, when in Bayern, please say Bayern. (However, they will understand Bavaria, if you say that.)

|||

In german, %26quot;Bavaria%26quot; is the patron-saint of the Bavarian Freestate, whose bronze figure is overlooking the Theresienwiese field in Munich. The name of the country in german is %26quot;Bayern%26quot;, or officially %26quot;Freistaat Bayern%26quot; !

See for details of the patron:

Greetings, Fritz

Thank you both!!

Almost Punsch Time

Vertical and Fritz may we have recommendations for the best stands and perhaps you might give the uneducated posters a brief description of what Punsch is.

Vertical,

You intrigue me. Do you perhaps have a dog that likes Punsch?

|||

My personal favorite is STROZZIS GLÜHWEINSTAND on the market in the Altes AKH, very nice mixture, very friendly service, and always a good spirit ...

Generally speaking, %26quot;punsch%26quot; is a warm, alcoholic drink, that originally comes from India, and is made out of Arrak, a sweet brandy destilled out of brown sugar, sugar, lemons, water and tea. The modern receipe, as you will mostly find it in Vienna, consists of tea, austrian rum, a little bit of red wine, hopefully not too much water and lots of spices like ciannamon and similar stuff. To add a bit of fruity taste, one adds chopped pieces of ornages, which have been marinated with rum and sugar the night before. This makes the traditional punsch, but there are hundreds of variations to this, with one of the most popular beeing %26quot;Beerenpunsch%26quot;, in which the chopped oranges are substituted by a mixture of red berries, sugar and rum.

%26quot;Glühwein%26quot; is a form of mulled wine, main component is red wine, on to which you add loads of sugar, cinnamon sticks and clover, and give the whole thing a bit of a push by adding some rum, but not too much.

If you habe never tried it before, start with Glühwein, because the punch is much sweeter, and you couldn´t taste anything about the vine afterwards. In both cases, the quality of the drink depends on two factors: The quality of the raw materials, thats were it most likely goes wrong if it goes wrong, you can feel if it was cheap wine and rum, but only on the day after ... and the second factor is the carefull cooking, if the mixture is too cold, the spices don´t free their scents and tastes, but if it starts cooking during the process, the whole alcohol disappears ...

Greets, Fritz

|||

I have never been a glühwein fan and much prefer punsch.

Almost as many recipes for punsch as Punsch stands in Vienna.

Everyone has their own favorites - many are used as a meeting place after working or shopping. Each has their own favorite version of Punsch.

You can get everything from %26quot;Kinder Punsch%26quot;- no alcohol to %26quot;Turbo Punsch %26quot; extra alcohol added to the normal punsch after it is ready for you.

Basic ingredients - all have their special amounts of each

wine,sugar , rum or brandy, tea, orange or other citrus, cloves , cinnamon

some recipes include raisins or like .

It is served very hot and can quickly be absorbed into your body. thus one must drink carefully , but it is really good to warm you in the cold late afternoon or early evening.

Numerous stands on Freyung are now my favorite places - especially the one run by the hospital. The atmosphere of the Christmas Market adds to the drink.

Many gather in these places to enjoy friendship and a good time.

The places on Graben are good too and the money earned there by the service organizations goes to help their causes.

Much more on this subject can be found by entering punsch in the search box.

Hello

Operettaman - I send you a private message.

|||

Some people say, the fun is not in drinking the perfect cup of the hot stuff - but in finding it ! :-) But vertical is right, its dangerous stuff when you are not used to it, its about double to triple the strenght of normal wine, and each cup holds about the content of a big wineglass, and due to the warmth and the high content of sugar, the alcohol is absorbed into the blood and into the brain much quicker then normally ... But some say, its only a matter of training, my personal record-holder had 17 cups .. before he needed our ambulance .... when we later enterd the A %26amp; E room in which they pumped out his stomach, again with another patient, the whole ward had a kind of christmas smell .... :-)

Greets, Fritz

|||

Vertical:

Alles ist klar.

|||

I raise my hand for Gluehwein, especially the red one.

There are different taste and qualities of punch out there

but I never found a bad red Gluehwein.

So try yourself

|||

I prefer Punsch - and my favorite Christmas market are the ones in Spittelberg and in Schoenbrunn.

|||

I%26#39;m one of those few people that make a special trip (one of three or four each year to Vienna) specially to top up on Punch and Nuts. See you in two weeks!

My favourite stalls?

I use to like the one at the top of Kohlmarkt. It use to have a lovely looking and very polite Viennese girls with little sign saying %26quot;mit schuss%26quot;. Then the stall changed hands and the punch wasn%26#39;t so nice - and the punch option changed (!) to Turbo Punch. Then it changed hands again I think. Now not so good.

There%26#39;s a lovely punch stall in the center of Freyung that seems more interested in Tea than punch but serves Punch with an orange Schuss. On the other side of the road is another stall and mrs UK2 tells me that the design student on ORF the other night who helped design the new huts looks like the student running the stall.

The best erdbeeren stall is at the top of Rathausplatz (top right if looking at Rathaus) and they specialise in their own brew. You get a spoon for the berries and can choose strawberries or cherries.

I use to stay at Sacher Appartments that overlooked Stephansplatz and would sit at the window waiting for them to push back the doors of the large punch hut in front of the cathedral and as soon as it opened - I%26#39;d be down in the lift like speedo. Now it%26#39;s gone. Evidently the church doesn%26#39;t like Punch! Very sad.

There are some nice stalls at Schonbrun - one in particular does a generous Ameretto punch.

I like many at Spittelberg but since they thinned the huts at Karlsplatz and Spittelberg to pad out the new area in front of the museum and art gallery - both areas have lost a little atmosphere.

Anyway this all goes to prove how sad we are - but we%26#39;ve looked forward to our winter visit every year for the last 15 years almost as much as our first visit to the Swiss House for our first spring Stelze.

I encourage anyone going to Vienna over the next month or so to linger a while longer at some punch stalls.

Taxi's/Public Transport on Xmas day?

Hey Everyone,

I am travelling to Vienna on the 21st December 2007, and returning on the 25th December 2007, I was just wondering if there will be any problem getting to the airport on Xmas day?

Do taxi%26#39;s/public transport still run?

Thanks :)

|||

Of course, all schedules run like on a sunday / holiday, but everything will be running !

25th %26amp; 26th is the traditional day for Austrians to visit their friends and family for exchange of presents !

Greets, Fritz

|||

I think UK is the only country to completely halt public transport on Christmas days. At least in Europe.

living in salzburg

i have been living in salzburg for 3 months now, and i am interested in finding some leisure time activities to make my stay more exciting.

i have been trying to find information on %26#39;things to do%26#39; here, but i have only found touristy activities. if anyone has any suggestions, or knows of any websites that will be helpful in my search it would be much appreciated.

|||

Could you give us more of an idea of the kind of thing you like to do? I have friends who live in Salzburg and they do a lot of horseriding, swimming, paragliding, etc.

Salzburger Nachrichten website has a Freizeit page:

|||

thanks for the reply.

i am actually pretty open at this point, as i%26#39;d just like to find something fun to look forward to each week. however, i am slightly limited financially, so something towards the cheap end of the spectrum would be good. i%26#39;m already involved in hockey and i%26#39;ve always done lots of typical sports, so i%26#39;m looking for something a little more out of the ordinary. winter has also officially arrived, so that may cut down the list of options a bit.

Transport and openings times

Hi,

I%26#39;ll be staying at the Marriot at the end of Nov. I%26#39;ve prebooked CAT tickets to get from the airport to the city centre. When I get to Wein Mitte - is the Marriot walking distance - on the map it looks fairly close or shoudl I just jump in a taxi??

Also are the main tourist sites / museums open on Sundays or do some close?

Thanks in advance

|||

Its exactly 700 metres from the exit doors of the station to the hotel doors, even terrain, mostly along the %26quot;Stadtpark -Park%26quot; !

Yes, all important sites and museums are open, some tend to close on Mondays.

Greets, Fritz

Thanks Fritz!

Next May

Visiting Vienna in may for around 4 nights with my sister.

Where can we visit from Vienna by train or bus? We like to do a bit of sightseeing, some shopping, some eating and drinking, and just soaking up the atmosphere of the places we visit. Visiting by train, the longest journey would be not much more than 2 hours.

Could we visit/is it worthwhile going to Bratislava?

Regards,

Pat.

|||

You could go to Salzburg with the fastest train connection of 2:36 hours:

http://www2.salzburg.info/

Or Graz within 2:37 hours:

Train schedules:

For going to Bratislava i would opt for the fast boat - Bratislava is not very spectacular, but with the boat trip it offers a nice day trip:
