What not to wear

Hi

We%26#39;re visitng the Xmas market next week and also going to the Mozart concert, which looks wonderful. Since we%26#39;re only going for a couple of days I%26#39;m trying to minimise luggage and leave space for bits I%26#39;ll buy when there. So is the Mozart concert a dressing up thing or is smart/casual ok?Does my husband need to take jacket and tie?

I feel a bit silly asking, but may potentially feel even more daft if I turn up in a frilly black number and everyone else is wearing jeans!

Any assistance with my wardrobe gratefully appreciated

Hi Katy

At the Mozart Dinner Concert people wear a variety of things. Some dress up very smartly. On the other hand, in September, I saw someone going in wearing shorts, trainers, bumbag and a baseball cap. On the whole smart casual would be good. Your husband need not wear a tie if he%26#39;s wearing a nice shirt. My husband wore a light linen jacket over his shirt (no tie) but that was high summer. Coats can be left in the cloakroom so if you want to wear a fleece to keep out the cold on the way there you%26#39;re not left with it on the back of your chair :-). I enjoyed dressing up. I felt the occasion deserved it but I packed a very thin outfit that took up no space or weight in the suitcase. We were given seats right at the front and I can%26#39;t help wondering if it was because we%26#39;d made the effort. Certainly some will wear jeans but they%26#39;ll be in the minority.

For walking round the markets I%26#39;d wear layers and don%26#39;t forget a hat. Have a great time.

Thank you Liz.

I%26#39;ve taken your advice and have bought the hat and am now packing a couple of smart -ish tops and skirt. I%26#39;d also like to say that from browsing the topics here, how impressed I am by the trouble you go to to help and advise people on the forum. You%26#39;re a great advert for salzburg and for tripadvisor.

Thank you

Thank you, Katy. I am so passionate about Salzburg I love to talk about it :-)

While you%26#39;re there you might like to go into the courtyard at Stiftskeller St Peter for a mug of Gluhwein (perhaps on a different occasion to the Dinner Concert as it isn%26#39;t all that warm in there). The courtyard is magical at this time of year. They decorate it with tiny lights and being cut out of the mountain it is like a glittery cave. Last year they had an almost life-size crib in there too. When we%26#39;re wandering round the markets we usually dip in there for a mug of hot wine.

Lots of the little alleyways have tiny Christmas markets in them too. These alleys connect Universitatplatz, Getreidegasse and Griesgasse. They are well worth a look.

Have a great trip.

I went to the Motzart Dinner Concert yesterday. It was the highlight of our excellent weekend! I wore a pretty sweater, plain pants, and boots. My husband wore slacks and a button down shirt (no tie). We looked like most of the crowd. A few couples were very formally dressed - but may have felt silly.

Arrive by 7:15 to get a good seat, for the 8 pm dinner.

Have fun!

Thank you - I%26#39;m really looking forward to the trip and even the weather looks seasonal !
