Attention Vienna Forum Contributors!

Although I am English and live in the UK I am half Viennese on my mother%26#39;s side. I have visited Vienna regularly for 40+ years and love the city so I have found the Vienna Forum very interesting.

In my opinion it has some of the best contributors to be found on TripAdvisor - people such as Vertical, Fritz, Mikey, HuSanNiang, Operettaman, Ulrike and many others who give comprehensive answers to just about every question posed. Well done to all of you!

I have noticed, however, that some questions crop up time and time again:

How do I get from the airport to town?

What transport ticket should I buy?

Where can I get details of concerts during my stay?

Can you recommend a restaurant in my price range?

etc etc etc

These questions usually get a patient reply from you guys (and girls!), but you often have to repeat yourselves.

TripAdvisor has a section of Inside Pages on Vienna which do get updated from time to time. I just wondered whether if everyone looked at these and kept them up-to-date and comprehensive then repeat questions could just be directed to the appropriate page saving lots of time on duplication.

The Vienna Forum already has TripAdvisors best contributors. Why not give it the best Inside Pages of any city!

How about it contributors?

|||

Norman you present a good question.

First - thank you for the positive comment.

My experience with the Inside Pages has not been good.

Yes, the Inside Pages offer information regarding most frequently asked questions and can be valuble.

I had posted there often in the beginning of these pages not only for Austria but other places I have frequently visited.

I found most all seekers of advice ignored these pages and just offered direct questions. Mostly when suggestions were made to look at these pages and receive good advice posters did not do it.

Note that the existence of these pages does not have a promenent ( spelling? ) space or good notice.

Unfortunately , too often individuals , mostly in the employ of Trip Advisor would follow informational postings with their own editing.

In almost all instances , these peopl, apparently part- time employees , seemingly paid by contributions had obviously not been to the very places they were writing about or took information directly from well known travel guides.

Nevertheless these pages are advertised for Travelers by Travelers.

In one instance, I posted on one such site only to receive an edit by someone who obviously had never been to this place and could not even copy information from some guide book and took other information of of context.

I posted my comment regarding this in the comment section of that page.Fruitless to do this.

I then decided that i would not volunteer my time, energy and cost of computer time to compile information that ultimately benefited Trip Advisor while they employed individuals to edit, change supply incorrect informtion and be paid for this.

Just look at some supposed contributors that post dozens times daily on pages from Bangkok to Los Los Angeles and every place in between. just after legitimate and knowledgeable posters such as you add and update information. Often change is just a word , punctuation and vocabulary.

How do they find all of these pages- answer is obvious.

I advised on one site that I would not waste my time posting as a volunteer and have a paid individual with limited knowledge of the subject alter and edit the post for no legitmate reason.

I have no trouble with this if my information is not correct. Unfortunately this is not the case.

I had commented- no more contributions by me on these pages.

I continue to honor my promise.

I suppose this rant does not find favor with Trip Advisor. I speak my mind.

I will still post thoughts and answers trying to fit them to questions asked- perhaps a little more time than just check Insider pages but it makes me feel better.

Now enough - time to get ready for an evening at the Volksoper.

|||

Vertical

You make a good point. It%26#39;s a shame the Inside Pages are not more prominently displayed and better utilised by TripAdvisor.

There%26#39;s nothing wrong with tidying up grammar and spelling, but putting in misinformation or just copying out guidebooks is useless.

Enjoy the Volksoper - what are you seeing?

Norman

|||

First of all, thank you Norman for bringing this up !

Now I am not definetly not a part of this long enough to know every detail about this page, but I am supporting your boths point that this editing by random contributers should be limited to Grammar and Spelling mistakes, beeing somebody who makes millions of them, I am actually a bit sad that its not possible to edit ones own contributions after they have been posted.

But I think it should definetly not be able to change them fundamentaly so easy. I think it would be better if only Local experts can make real changes, other posters should only be able to make a %26quot;marked%26quot; comment directly in the text like %26quot;Attention: Museum now closed every Monday%26quot; ... or something like that, and the local experts could be informed about this in some automatic way, and if they find the time for this, could then verify the new information and change the article if necessary, or simple leave it there if its unclear, so that people at least now that it is unclear.

And you are right as well when you are saying that the inside pages aren´t really presented properly.

But personally, I would also prefer to go on answering the questions, even if they repeat themselves from time to time, but that at least forces us to keep our own knowledge up to date. When I started posting here, e.g. I tended to give people wrong ticket-prices for public transport in Vienna, simply because I was so sure I knew them anyway, if you look these things up regularly to find the right weblinks, you will more easily notice if something changes, then if you always have to think %26quot;Did I write about this somewhere - Do I have to correct it now ?%26quot;

Greets, Fritz

|||

Agree with Fritz and Vertical. It is easier to answer the questions here even if they are sometimes repetitive. Thanks for your kind words; Wien is our favorite city and we love to help those who are newcomers, especially those who have done at least a little research on the city before posting their questions.

Vertical and Fritz: I am thirsting for Sturm!

|||

Thanks for being mentioned!

I agree with the posters above on the answering of the questions.

|||

Norman,

Volksoper last evening- Orpheus In Der Unterwelt.

A new production - well staged and an excelent cast of some Volksoper regular ensemble and some other newer faces to the Volksoper.productions

It receives some good reviews and much better than some of the new productions offered under the old direction.

It is probably not for a visitor who looks for a Vienna style Strauss, Kalman evening but very entertaining.

The new Director Meyer, seems to being doing all the right things.

many subtle and not so subtle changes The ensemble seems to like him too..

The House full last evening. Audience seemed to be mostly locals - a good sign.

I would like to add the name of Roley to the list of good contributors.

She often visits Vienna and offers excelent comments in my opinion. Often with some good humor

Happy to see that most have similar feelings regarding the topic of this post.

|||

Operettaman-

Sturm- both white and red-seems excelent most everywhere.

I attempt to drink my share.

Perhaps 2007 wine may be good also - much sugar in the grapes.

|||

Vertical

You%26#39;re right, I should have included Roley who%26#39;s contributions are just as interesting, informative and valuable as everybody else%26#39;s.

Maybe it would be good for the managers of TripAdvisor to read the responses to this post so they can appreciate why the Inside Pages as currently set up do not work.

Glad you enjoyed the Volksoper. On a recent post comparing the Staatsoper to the Volksoper I mentioned that the surtitles at the Staatsoper could help a newcomer to opera%26#39;s understanding. When I last went to the Volksoper in Dec 2006 they didn%26#39;t have sutitles - is that still the case?

|||

Re: subtitles

Some but not all offerings at the Volksoper offer subtitles

Only in english and the screen just above the stage.

It is not a complete translation of all dialogue and song but enough to allow one to esaily follow general plot and happenings.

As you know , the programm offers a good synopsis in several languages- also acts as a nice souvenir.

A nice thing now at the Volksoper- a small bar set up outside the entrance to allow guests to have a drink before the offering. This in addition to the Buffet inside.

Of course only in good weather.

I assume the owner of the Oper Cafe is not so happy with this arrangement as he also now offers stand- up tables just outside that place too.

This adds to the nice atmosphere in front of the house.

|||

Thanks for this honourable mention!

That makes me feeling happy about my tireless effort to assist potential visitors to my home country. Additionally I can practice my lingustic skills. Although I sometimes feel bored by repeating (simple) questions, I still try to do my best to ease someone%26#39;s confusion.

Would it be possible to create a %26quot;locked%26quot; thread on the top of the list that includes very basic information of the corresponding sub-forum?

Public Rehearsals

Can someone explain to me how public rehearsals work. I feel I would be remiss if I went to Vienna and did not hear some classical music in one of the concert halls. However, I do not want to spend a lot of money and have not heard positive comments regarding standing room tickets. I am not a music connesseur and just want to get a %26quot;taste%26quot;.

|||

Look carefully at the concert offerings during the time of your visit

www.musikverein.at

www.konzerthaus.at

they often have excelent concerts with many tickets in satisfactory seats at 13 - 35 euro.

Coming some distance , it is unfortunate to miss a nice evening ar these prices.

Standing room at the Musikverein is Ok- but most appreciate the concert and surroundings much more with a seat.

You will find few %26quot; rehearsals%26quot; ( Probe) availble - then by ticket and you usually need to know some one.

snow in salzburg

hi can anyone give me some advice

im thinking of taking my son and daughter age 8 and 13

to salzburg for a 3 or 4 day break...via jet 2 .as i cant afford to go to lapland.

the main reason is they want to play in real deep snow.

so and or info would really help make this break special..

whens the best time of the year to go so they can play in deep snow.

wheres the best area to stay to be near shops markets ect..

can anyone recomend anything else to do whilst there

sorry for the lame questions but this is my first short break away

in europe ....

thankyou all in advance

|||

Its unlikely to get real deep snow in Salzburg as its at a lower altitude to the sorounding mountains. You may like consider one of the ski resorts further south where even if you are non skiers you will find that theres plenty to do, you will find most resorts have toboganing runs and Ice rinks.

Schladming or Bad Gastein would be a good starting points to research and they about an hour by train away from Salzburg.

|||

Another place to consier is Zell am See. This is about an hour by train from Salzburg and is on a lake with fabulous mountains all around.

opera tickets via a travel office

i will be in vienna december 13 days - would like to see at least one opera at the vienna state opera house. by accident i got on a website www.viennaconcerts.com they list the opera performances in december 2007. they have tickets for wagners die valquerie (spelling) and boris gudinoff by (again spelling) the price range in euros runs from 224,198,149,119,89,69,and 44. what bothers me is are they overcharging for tickets? is it worth it or should i wait until i arrive in vienna and go to the box office the tickets there are probably a little bit less or would you get tickets through this travel office. if i wait till december when i arrive i will probably wind up with nothing - i can%26#39;t take standing room the wagner opera is more than 4 hours can%26#39;t do it. therefore i really don%26#39;t know what to do. thanks

|||

I%26#39;d try to get the tickets directly from the opera. However, don%26#39;t wait until you%26#39;re in Vienna. Their website has all the options:

wiener-staatsoper.at/Content.Node2/…7590.php

Die Walküre will be very much in demand as it is a highly anticipated new production. Unless you%26#39;re really into Wagner%26#39;s music, it might not be worth the extra cost and trouble to get a ticket for that. General internet ticket sales starts exactly one month ahead of each performance. What you could do is try to order in writing (fax) right now. This service is for international patrons and patrons from outside Vienna only and orders are handled before the general sale starts. If it doesn%26#39;t work out, you could try to get tickets via the official internet sales at

www.wiener-staatsoper.at

one month ahead of the date you%26#39;re planning to visit. And in the very unlikely event that you%26#39;re unable to get any tickets for any of the performances you had in mind this way, you can still get some from private ticket agents like the one you found online. They usually charge 20% commision, sometimes more, maybe for the Walküre.

|||

thank you for your reply - i am a wagner fan - i went on the internet www. you mentioned yes its in english until i want to purchase tickets then its in german which i don%26#39;t understand i%26#39;m ashamed to say but the price of tickets while expensive are lower than that company vienna concerts. maybe i can send the opera house an e-mail for tickets or its hopeless because of the language.

|||

If you%26#39;re a Wagner fan, you should really try to get into Die Walküre.

Right, internet ticket ordering is in German only, that is a problem. But as I said, online ticket sales doesn%26#39;t start until one month ahead of the date you want to attend anyway. From that date, you%26#39;ll be able to check remaining seat availability online and from the following day (e.g. for a performance on Dec 4th from Nov 5th) try the telephone credit card ticket sale +43 1 513 1 513 from 10 am to 9pm Vienna time. I%26#39;m pretty sure they%26#39;ll be able to help you in English.

You should follow the instructions for %26quot;written ticket order%26quot; and send them preferably a fax (+43 1 51444 2969) or a letter indicating the performances you want to see including alternative dates and the ticket category you wish to order. They are used to orders in English, so language won%26#39;t be a problem there. It might help to speed up things to include your credit card details right away, otherwise they%26#39;ll probably ask for them. If you don%26#39;t hear from them until a month before the performance (so when general sale starts), try telephone order and, as a last resort, get the ticket via an independent agent.

Of course, you can also send them an e-mail and ask about your options but chances are it will take some time until they respond and then they might just let you know about the option of written ticket orders.

|||

Please try to purchase opera tickets directly from the State Opera.

As mentioned on this post and many others ( just insert opera tickets in search box for much information. )

If you use an agency the tickets will cost 20-40 % more as a premium for using them -example name mentioned above.

The State Opera site has detailed instructions for advance ticket sales - you can do this by phone with a credit card or by fax or e-mail also mentioned in detail here and elsewhere. Not realy a hard thing to do.

I have the advantage of going to the box office to purchase tickets. Normally a good selection of seats are avaialable on the time frame before the performance.

Exception may be a premiere or an opera featuring one of the Opera treasured talents.

Even then often single tickets in various price categories remain.

If you seek 2 tickets - look to the single ticket availibility if you can not find 2 together - this often works.

A good alternative is the Volksoper with increasingly good performances of mostly lighter selections

www.volksoper.at

If you are not fortunate enough to get tickets using the above methods- try your hotel concierge or reception- they can normally always find tickets for you- most often at a lesser premium charged by the ticket brokers or try one of the numerous ticket sellers found in the city . many conveniently located in the city center- often showing tickets in their windows

|||

thank you so much for your replies it is really appreciated - its complicated getting tickets to the opera in another country. this is what i will do thanks to your suggestions...i will call the box office next week with my credit card hope they speak english - for a performance of die walkure december 20th i know they may tell me to call back november 20th thats all right i%26#39;ll call back and get a ticket i just hope i can see at least one performance at the state opera. by the way the volksoper (spelling) is very nice i hope i can get a ticket when i arrive in vienna they have performances of hansel and gretal (spelling) etc . p.s. if i can%26#39;t get any tickets no-one can say i did%26#39;t try.

Which coffee house in Vienna?

Next Sunday my daugther, 6 yrs, my mom, my aunt and myself will go to Vienna for a girls%26#39; getaway. My mom and aunt would like to visit one of the famous Austrian coffee houses. Any recommandations?

Thank you.

|||

Everyone in Vienna has their own favorite place., often close to where they live or work.

Very hard to give advice .

Best known to tourists is probably Demels on Kohlmarkt- often overrun with tourists and not the best place in my opinion- overpriced for what you get.

www.demel.at

some good places in the city center

Cafe Central

on Herrengasse near to the Hofburg Palace-

www.palaissevents.at

very nice atmosphere - music later in the day.

Oberlaa - on Neuer Markt and other places too-

many think the best pastry in Vienna thus a favorite here- usually fast service- limited meals too.

Landtmann- on the Ringstrasse

www.landtmann.at

Griensteidl -across from the Hofburg

Diglas on Wollzeile also a smaller place on Fleishmarkt

www.diglas.at

not in city center but an old favorite Cafe Sperl

Any of the above should offer a nice time.

for more information on these and other places also

www.info.wien.at

click on wining dining.

|||

Vertical gives you good recommendations for the type of place you seek. My only other rec would be that you go EARLY before the hordes of tourists descend on them. Diglas on Wolllzeille is probably the exception, I have found you can go there without the crowds on most occasions. If you want to enjoy Cafe Central make sure to go before 9 am if you want a pleasant un-crowded experience. Demel not one that I would go to again. Sperl yes for what you seek. You can also try Cafe Schottenring.

Vertical; how is Dommayer these days?

|||

Hasn%26#39;t Oberlaa taken over Dommayer? I like Oberlaa in its place but I think it%26#39;s a shame that Dommayer gets absorbed into the chain ... I went there one Saturday afternoon in winter, for the little concert, and it was charming.

They have an incredibly dorky new waitress in the Diglas in Fleischmarkt - I watched her get three people%26#39;s orders wrong (including mine) and then argue the toss with the customers. I%26#39;ll be sticking to the Wollzeile branch in future. Their set menus are fab.

Tirolerhof near the Albertina is nice too. And Frauenhuber has good hot meals and delicious hot chocolate (on the Himmelpfortgasse, just off the Kaerntnerstrasse).

rol

|||

Roley is correct. Dommayer is now part of the growing Oberlaa empire.

I have not been there recently. The last time it seemed same as usual.

Oberlaa still has some of best offerings in Vienna in my opinion. The

marmorguglhof is excelent.

This consolidation is a trend.

Demels has been owned by Do and Co.for some time.

If Cafe Central gets full- they have a little place just across the street- a very small sign but very nice and quiet . Most tourists never realize this place exists.

|||

my favourites are

Café Demel

Café Landtmann

Café Sperl

and Café Schwarzenberg, Kärntner Ring 17

and if you are walking and pass my Aidia offers very good coffee and cakes and strudel: try their Maronispitz and the Topfenstrudel

|||

I like:

Cafe Landtmann

Cafe Demel

Of course you can also go to the famous hotel Sacher and visit their cafe to eat the original Sacher cake ( %26quot;Sachertorte%26quot;):

sacher.com/sacher/…

|||

I used to like Cafe Hawelka in Dorotheergasse, but does anyone else agree that it has lost some atmosphere in recent years, possibly since Frau Hawelka died? Is Leopold still active?

Although Demel is overpriced and full of tourists, watching the chefs at work can be quite interesting.

And the Kleines Cafe on Franziskanerplatz is very agreeable.

|||

What about Cafe Imperial? Do they have piano music?

|||

Cafe Imperial only has music weekends - I think about 15:00- 19:00 ( 3 PM - 7 PM. ) an expensive place.

Norman C.

Cafe Hawelka - I agree that it has lost much since the recent changes- perhaps it is just the look with awning and tables outside - and some other things- but the loss of the old couple there daily to watch over everything has signaled the end of a great era!

I have not been there recently - I try to remember it as it was.

|||

Note that there are cafés more for reading the newspaper, smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee, while others are more for those who want to seriously indulge in sweets . Many however will cater for both types of visitors.

Oberlaa, Demel and Heiner are particularly good for sweets and Landtmann and Mozart have a good cake-selection too.

Café Hawelka on the other side would not be the place to go for the cakes and certainly not a place to go if you mind smoke.

Jewish sites/history salzburg

Hi.

I will be in Saslzburg for a week late January. I am interested in current and former Jewish sites in Salzburg, and the area. Also, I am interested in visiting the concentration camps in the area.

Thank you for your help.

|||

Hello Marcia,

This the site to the concentration camp memorial in Mauthausen, which was the biggest on Austrian territory, and which is also the only one that still shows most remains and has been converted into a museum:

http://www.mauthausen-memorial.at/

Mauthausen is about 2 - 2,5 hours by train and bus away from Salzburg, if you are interested in going there, I will search for more detailed information and time schedules, might be easier to rent a car for a day and drive there.

According to my informations, most camps in the Salzburg area where forced labour camps who were under the command of the concentration camp in Dachau, near Munich, here is a map of all the different camps in Austria:

mauthausen-memorial.at/db/…

And this is a link to the memorial site in dachau with informations about them, unfortunatly in german only.

www.keom.de/denkmal/auswert.php…

It seems as if in the town of Salzburg directly, forced labout was mainly used for clearing damages after air-raides and for the terribly dangerous search for unexploded bombs, one of the articles says that the inmates were imprisoned in police barracks in %26quot;Hellbrunner Allee%26quot;, probably a local community member from Salzburg can say if there are any remains of this left.

This is the link to the Jewish community in Salzburg:

Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Salzburg

Lasserstraße 8

A-5020 Salzburg

Tel +43 662-872228

office@ikg-salzburg.at

http://www.ikg-salzburg.at/

There is an old jewish cementary in Uferstrasse 47, but it has been closed, but you can contact the community to have it openend for you.

This might also be interesting: http://www.jewishnet.at !

Greets %26amp; Gut Shabbes,

Fritz

|||

thank you so much for the information!!

Marcia

|||

Gut shabbes to you, too.

Marcia

|||

Salzburg now has %26quot;stolpersteine%26quot; stumbling stones to commemorate Jewish families taken during the holocaust. I%26#39;m not sure of their exact locations but perhaps one of the sites Fritz recommends might be able to tell you.

|||

I recommend a visit to Mauthausen if possible in your schedule.

It is 1 hour 50 minutes by train with one change to the town of mauthausen.

for train info

www.oebb.at

The camp itself is out of the town perhaps 3-5 kilometers and probably best to take a taxi. It sits in a quiet area . You walk past the stone SS Barracks area to enter . A sobering sight.

The station or nearby place can probably call one for you. The ticket office can call one for your return.

Obviously the best way is by rental car.

I have visited Mauthausen several times, having taken visiting friends and also by myself.

Many say Dachau is a better visit , but I find Mauthausen better as you often are alone in various rooms and locations offering a most moving experience.

Many things still in their unchanged condition.

Audio guides and posters provide good information.

The quarry where many worked is nearby - just a short walk past many memorials. Many nationalities were prisoners there.

Few know that huge underground aircraft assembly plants existed late in the World War nearby to Linz. Some labor came from Mauthausen.

These plants blown up after the war. None remain to my knowledge.

It is very interesting to see the large numbers of school children that visit this camp.

More interesting to see their expressions and comments. Hopefully some learn from history.

Numerous prior postings regarding Mauthausen can be found here.

Just enter mauthausen in the search box.

|||

We were disappointed to find that Malthausen will be closed Dec 24-26 when we re in Salzburg. However, we are in Munich days prior. Does it make sense to go from Munich to Malth. and then on to Salzburg? We prefer to take local transportation as opposed to driving. Thanks

|||

Malthausen is not convenient to Munich via public transport - 3 - 3 1/2 hours by train with several tranfers. and beyond Salzburg.You would then need to return to Salzburg after your visit.just under 2 hours ( 1 hour 50 minutes) by train. A very long day with proper time at mauthausen.

Probably much better to do as a day trip from salzburg if schedule permits this.

|||

Thanks Vertical...do you or anyone else suggest renting a car from Munich in order to drive to Malthausen and then on to Salzburg? Not sure European car rental agencies operate similar to US where you can pick up and drop off in different locations. Perhaps I should start a new query as to car rental agency suggestions!

|||

Totally diiferent suggestion: Do you have a very spcial link to the camp in Mauthhausen, like family history or something, because when you are in Munich anyway, you could also go to the camp / memorial site in Dachau, which is only a 20 min. s-bahn journey away from the center of Munich, and as impressive as Mauthausen.

kz-gedenkstaette-dachau.de/englisch/content/…

One-way car rentals between two countries in Europe are always a costly affair, as you have to pay for either a collection tow-truck or a driver to basicly return your vehicle to the original renting point, as rental companies don´t really cooperate that much over here as in the states, eventhough they market under one brand. This is why the one-way fees are fairly expensive. Despite that, the system works very well.

Greets, Fritz

|||

Thanks Fritz. We are indeed planning to go to Dachau but understand that Maulthausen is less sanitized. We have toured several camps in Poland and try to pay our respects whenever we are near one as an affirmation of never forgetting the Holocaust. We will defer to your suggestion and stick only with Dachau on this trip. We will be in Munich far longer than Salzburg.
