Vienna - Salzburg - Prague

Hi, my husband and I are flying to Vienna in December and have planned to fly home from Prague in order to shorten the travelling time as we are limited to just one week.

The itinerary we were thinking of was 2 nights in Vienna, 2 nights in Salzburg and 3 nights in Prague and take in the Christmas markets. From looking at other threads on this website it seems quite complicated and long to travel from Salzburg to Prague by train. I have looked at the www.oebb.at but it doesn%26#39;t show timetables for our dates in December.

Would a day trip to Salzburg be sufficient and we could then just get the train from Vienna to Prague? Any input or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanking you in advance!!

Yes, it would be more convenient to go from Vienna to Prague.

Do not worry about the schedule - it will be more or less the same when you will be travelling - it is just the annual %26quot;change%26quot; of the schedules which will not really change much.

I would suggest to leave Vienna for Salzburg in the morning and stay in Salzburg for one night, then going back in the evening the next day.

I would also recommend staying in Vienna longer than in Prague and enjoy the nice atmosphere in the beautifully decorated city and visit some Christmas markets:

My recommendation for an itinery:

3 nights in Vienna (leaving for Salzburg in the morning of the 4th day)

1 night in Salzburg (heading back to Vienna in the evening)

1 night in Vienna and leaving early the next day for Prague

2 nights in Prague

I agree that one night in Salzburg would be enough, especially if you leave Vienna with an early train to Salzburg. As a day-trip from Vienna i think it%26#39;s too much of a hassle and you might have to leave in the evening at a time when atmosphere at the Christmas markes makes you want to stay.

Also, it%26#39;s true that the train-timetable likely won%26#39;t change much.

I%26#39;d suggest taking the afternoon connection from Salzburg to Prague, which takes 6 hours only.

I%26#39;d add the extra-day to Vienna as it has much to offer in terms of Christmas markets and museums. While Prague is a beautiful city to stroll around and admire, I don%26#39;t think it is as attractive in December with potentially ugly weather.

If you want to spend the second day in Salzburg until the evening, I would go back to Vienna and from there to Prague.

If you do not mind leaving earlier, the most convenient (only one time change of trains) and fastest (6:06 hours) connection from Salzburg to Prague.

from Salzburg Hbf 15:34

(change trains in Linz)

arrival in Praha hl.n. 21:40

One night in Salzburg will be ok. I suggest 3 in Prague.

Hi Ulrike73, nemorino79 and eurotravel07

Thank you so much for your help and input, much appreciated. We will definately spend a night in Salzburg now and will go with the flow about the train route to Prague.
