Booking train

Hi All,

I%26#39;m having trouble booking our train trip to Italy fron Austria. Either it%26#39;s in German or when I change it to English the train will only go around Austria, it won;t let me pick Italy as a destination

|||

You cannot pick %26quot;Italy%26quot; as a destination for the simple reason there are lots of cities in Italy. You have to tell ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways) a specific city.

It%26#39;s the same with any airline. You live in Boston, so you can%26#39;t call Delta Air Lines and say you want to fly to %26quot;Florida%26quot; from Boston. They will need a city.

I just tried to book a train for next week at www.oebb.at from Wien to Firenze and got it just fine for 29 Euros (a special price). However, the web site did tell me, that one-way tickets to Italy cannot be purchased on-line. You must have a return date. If you want a one-way ticket you have to buy it from either a travel agent or at a ticket office / window at a train station.

For which date do you want to buy the ticket?

There%26#39;s an annual europe-wide timetable change on 8/9 December. In the austrian timetable-query, it only shows trains in Austria beyond this date...

Usually you won%26#39;t have any problems to buy tickets at the station.

Online-tickets Wien-Venezia (only in German)

We literally just came back from Vienna and trust me, buy the train tickets there. There is an info booth in the middle of the first floor (Sudbanhoff) who can help you out. Price is right,too. One tip though, when you buy a ticket make sure you get the seat numbers and when boarding the train, make sure you are in the right coach. We had coach tickets and inadvertently sat on first class. Although we were bumped from the reserved seats a few times, we finally found some seats and just paid the difference on board.

Good luck.

On all trains from Austria to Italy, you get a seat number with your tickets as italian railways require this.

Just board the coach and take the reserved seats. On all other trains in Austria, you %26#39;can%26#39; reserve a seat (€ 3,50 incl. one connection) but allmost 95% of passenger don%26#39;t do this as it%26#39;s usually no problem to find seats. Reserved seats on these trains are marked with a little paper card overhead, showing from where to where the seat is reserved.
