Vienna -Salzburg

We are going to be 6 days in Vienna in February (from 2, leaving on 8) in which time we plan to take in as much as we can opera, concerts and museums. Is it worthwhile to take a day trip to Salzburg (early morning to late night)? Or is it a waste of time to be there just for a few hours in the middle of winter? We are not interested in the Sound of Music...

Many would argue that there is too much to do in Vienna to waste a single day, but Salzburg is a beautiful city and quite a contrast to Vienna.

I%26#39;ve taken people there on a day trip a couple of times and we always enjoyed the journey and the city. You would need to take an early train in February as the days are still quite short.

It would not be difficult to avoid the Sound of Music connections...........but avoiding Mozart would be a different matter!!

Oh, and you%26#39;re more likely to see snow in Salzburg!

Salzburg is defintely worth a day trip and the journey is no problem at all as there are direct trains communting between these two cities several times a day.

Thanks , Norman and Ulrike, for the replies. We are definitely not trying to avoid Mozart, although he did try to avoid Salzburg as much as he could. As for snow, we are Canadian, not afraid of a little snow.... and also not looking for it. I think we might follow your advice and go there for a day. I will try the websites for schedules.

My brother-in-law lives in Montreal so I know a little of what your winters are like.

No, I just think European cities look extra pretty with a dusting of winter snow and even if Salzburg itself didn%26#39;t have any the mountains surrounding it would look extra nice with white tops!
