I%26#39;ve just discovered when reading up about Vienna before our visit next week that we will be there on National Day (26 Oct). Is that good for us as visotors or does it mean everywhere will be closed and public transport not running as often?
Is this a special time when there are things going on we shouldn%26#39;t miss?

It means that all shops will be closed, but public transport will run constantly enough. Restaurants and cafes should be open, but not all of them.
There are some special events - like..:
f.e. the Austrian Parliament will have %26quot;open house%26quot; the whole day - you will be able to visit all those beautiful rooms (it is a really nice, old building)

There will be kind of parade of the Austrian army at the Heldenplatz.

thanks for the advice

All major tourist attractions are open as usual on the 26th.
Perhaps a few restaurants closed but still enough to provide good choices.
Public transport will still run but with a slighly reduced schedule.
An interesting military exhibit and ceremonies at Heldenplatz just in front of the Hofburg Palace attracts many thousands - if weather is good.
You will see many local families out for the day .

The biggest problems you might come across are buslines detoured or tramlines that had to shorten their routes due to the closure of Heldenplatz for traffic because of the miltary exhibition that takes place there.
On the day before, there is always a bit of roadtroubles around Vienna in the late afternoon, as thios is when all the miltary vehicles are brought into town.
I was on late shift last year on that evening in the emergency callcentre of our company, and we received a few very nervous calls by international guests, who were a bit confused seeing tanks and lots of Army combattrucks driving through the streets of the town and lots of helicopters in the air .... no need to panic, they are just driving to the showgrounds !
