Staying at Hotel Altantis -touring suggestions?

We will be staying at Hotel Atlantis the end of the month, for a 3 day weekend. Never been to Vienna. Dont%26#39; speak German. Somewhat adventerous, and really want to get the most out of our visit!

Any suggestions for getting around from the location?

Must see/do, or eat?

We are on a budget and interested in enjoying teh real flavor of Vienna, not just the tourist side.

Your hotel is not really convenient or within waking distance of most sightseeing and good restaurants.

You should buy the 72 hour public transport card that will allow unlimited use of all bus, streetcar, U-bahn and S bahn lines within the city.

You will need it .The bus line 48A not far from the hotel will take you to the Ringstrasse and near to much sightseeing.

You are also not far from streetcar 18 and subway U-6.

You can take the 18 to the Westbahnhof or walk there and take the U- 3 directly to the city center.

You do not mention your intersets-

but most like

Schönbrunn Palace ( take streecar # 58 from the Westbahnhof there.

Hofburg Palace

Fine Arts Museum ( Kuhsthistorisches Museum.

Museum Quarter

the 3 above a short walk from the end station on the Ring of the 48 A

Lack of german skills is not really a problem. many tourists find that you can find your way easily and that many people will speak english. Audio guides available in some places also.

many restaurnats will have english menus or just ask waiter for help. I would try to eat in the cdity center rather than near xour hotel- many more possibilities.

TMake a visit to a Vienna cafe for pastry and a coffee.

look at this site for much information .

www.info.wien.at

insert your visit dates in the events section to see what is happening.

If you have more questions - just repost here.

Thank you! That is the kind of information I was hoping for.

Can you tell me about the Vienna Heuriger Express? Sounded interesting. Is it worth the ime/money or is there anything similiar?

Nothing similar in Vienna to my knowledge.

Another train can be found in Dürnstein along the Danube - but 1 hour plus away.

The train is interesting to those liking wine and some local scenery Nice tour in my opinion.

very easy to reach it using streetcar D to Nussdorf or # 38 to Grinzing

their website

www.heurigerexpress.at

check dates that it will no longer run - end of October.

Grape harvest is generally finished. Grape leaves will change color now- orange , red, yellow so sights are nice.

I suggest a stop at Sirbu heuriger - ok wine and nice views- of course pick a good day

Soory the remaining portion of my posting went missing.

Sirbu is on Kahlenbergstrasse - part way up the mmmountain on right side .

I think they open about 3 PM.

Tour qill take you through areas of Grinzing too.

You can get off the train if you wish and carch the next one an hour later at both places.

Grinzing does not have any of my favorite places.

Several good heurigeK are in Nussdorf very near to the train stop and of course the streetcar D.

Schuebel- Auer is very nice

www.schuebel-auer.at

only in german but I think you can see enough.

One good way to quickly learn about Vienna is to tale the streetcar # 1 or #2 around the Ringstrasse. after you arrive. No added cost with your 72 hour card.

It will pass the Rathaus ( City Hall), Burgtheater, Parliament, University . Fine Arts and Natural History Museum , The Hofburg Palace complex, State Opera, Imperial Hotel, various parks etc. - a great way to learn where things are and sightseeing possibilities -- great if a rainy day too - easy to get place to place and see sights.
