Christmas Day in Salzburg

We will be in Salzburg over the Christmas holiday. Are there things to do on Christmas day? Are there many restaurants open that day?

|||

Im there as well over Christmas and am not too sure there will be much open, I have booked a day out with Panorama Tours including a sleigh ride, that will pass the day away !!!! they collect from hotel so no drink drive problems . Merry Christmas.

|||

Curatokod: Thanks so much for the info...that actually sounds like a great idea. Can Panaorama Tours be booked on-line?

Your help is much appreciated.

You will find that most everything will begin to close in the afternoon of Christmas Eve.

Most family celebrations are held Christmas Eve in Austria- a very good meal- exchange of gifts.

It will be harder to find things open Christmas Eve than Christmas Day.

It is best to make reservations for dinner Christmas Eve. Your hotel can assist you.

|||

Oaklanders, yes I booked with Panorama on line, just type in the name and it pops up as they say !!! the Christmas day trip costs about 45 euros a head for around 8hours trip.

Vertical,

I hope that name has something to do with Skiing. I plan to be skiing in Europe over Christmas and haven%26#39;t made specific plans. Do you ski and what is you favorite ski resort?

Yes , I am a skier , but my screen name is not based on that.

I will give you my favorites, but everyone likes different things.

In my opinion, Christmas- New Years is not the best time to ski in Austria.

Resorts are completely filled, highest prices of the year and longest lift lines.

If price is no object- my favorite is Oberlech.

www.oberlech.com

This is just above Lech- access by cable car only ( no trouble- you leave luggage at the valley lift station and it is promptly brought to your hotel)

The small village is free of cars- a true %26quot; ski- in ski -out %26quot; situation.

Very nice to visit Lech in the evening and then return via cablecar to this nice place.

Excelent skiing

a nice hotel - Goldenerberg

www.goldenerberg.at

The town of Ischgl is also a very nice place. excelent skiing- fantastic nightlife- good ski circus.

www.ischgl.com

If you look for variety- the Zillertal valley about onre hour from Innsbruck has many nice towns and good skiing.

Towns such as Fügen, Zell am Ziller, Mayrhofen, Finkenberg, Lanrsbach and the glacier at Hintertux offer a good skiing and many accomodations. One ski pass covers all town lifts .

www.mayrhofen.at

some nice places-

Elisabeth Hotel Mayrhofen

Sporthotel Stock- Finkenberg

Hotel Theresia- Zell

I have friends that live in this valley- am often there and enjoy it.

Perhaps not the name resorts of the above but very nice.

If you do go for the Christmas period, most hotels require a longer stay - example December 26- January 6.

Ski early and late. alsowhen most eat 12-14 and when ski school is not in session. 12-14.

Lifts are normally crowded 10-12 14 -16.

I usually ski in January after the 6th- cold but not crowded and much cheaper.

March also a good time better weather and mostly warmer- still good snow. Many nice places to stop and eat everywhere good sun terraces most places. Many renting beach chairs .

I believe that you will find well- marked and groomed trails everywhere.

Enjoy!

Thanks for all the info. It is much appreciated. What about skiing the end of February. How warm and where is the best place? We would like to ski many different areas to find which we like best. So a central location with different resorts close? My husband is a ski slave driver so we are the first on the lifts and last off but we take a mid morning and mid afternoon break so we miss the lunch crowds. We are intermediate to advanced intermediate. We can ski anything, it is just how fast we do it. We do not like cliffs or having to jump to start a run. What are your suggestions????
