You should get the bavaria ticket, 27euro for 2-5 persons, one ticket can be used for both directions, valid after 9am weekdays until 3am the following day and from midnight to 3am the following day on all other days. You should contact Abalada on this site, he%26#39;s the expert on all train travel.

sorry, my previous post is referring to the trip Munich-Salzburg, not Vienna-Salzburg.

Hi drasm,

you are right.... for train travel within Austria (so Vienna-Salzburg) you get a discount from the 2nd passenger on...

Salzburg is (or let%26#39;s say was) a border station, so it is served by the austrian railways ÖBB and the german railways DB. Don%26#39;t worry, no passport checks or anything like that... it%26#39;s one station.

You can buy the Bayern-Ticket. It%26#39;s valid Mon-Fri after 9 am until 3 am next day, Sat-Sun midnight until 3 am next day. It is valid on all means of local and regional transport in Bavaria (so not for Salzburg busses), so also transport in Munich. Valid on RB,RE and IRE trains. Cost is € 27 for up to 5 people from the ticket machine, 2 € more from the counter.

If you insist on taking a faster IC,EC,OEC or ICE train Salzburg-Munich, the ticket will be € 27-31, oneway, per person!

And if you want to start earlier than 9am, you can buy a Bayern ticket and a regular ticket to the first station, the train arrives after 9 am.

I too will be making this journey from Munich Airport to Salzburg (one way 2 person) in a couple of weeks at around 1pm. I am now a little unsure about what ticket to buy. I was just going to get a single although is there a better deal I can get. We are spending a couple days in Salzburg so will do a day trip somewhere else one day probably by train. Can I get a ticket which will cover me for train travel the following day.

|||

@drasm... yes, but you can only use the RB or RE trains Salzburg-Munich and return, not the IC,EC,OEC or ICE... usually only 15-20 mins. longer travel time.

You can also use all means of public transport (underground, tram, busses) in Munich! Valid Mon-Fri 9am to 3am next day, Sat %26amp; Sun midnight to 3am next day.

Cost from the ticket machine is € 27, can be paid with cash, credit card or Maestro card. You will get it 100% sure from the DB (german railways) ticket machine, but also all austrian ticket machines (ÖBB) sell it.

From the DB counter, it%26#39;s 2 € more...

|||

@drasm: and yes, it%26#39;s valid for up to 5 people who travel together. If the ticket has a field %26quot;Name%26quot; or %26quot;Vorname und Nachname%26quot; on it... fill in your name (one is enough).

@mdommers

if you want to save money, you can use the Bayern Ticket. Valid on S,RB and RE trains that take you to Salzburg. Cost is € 27 from the ticket machines (many of them at Munich Airport).

More if you catch the little bit faster IC, EC, OEC or ICE trains.

In Austria, you have to buy point-to-point tickets... and if you travel within Salzburg county, you can buy one thru ticket (also day ticket) for the entire journey. You are then allowed to use all means of public transport that take you to your destination... including all trains.

|||

thanks very much robbie i tihnk i will use the bavarian ticket as it will save us both nearly 70 euros and 15-20 min doesnt really matter .

@drasm:

You can all RB/RE trains also very easily in the timetable-query:

--%26gt; means of transport: only local transport.
