Compartment or Open coach for train travel with luggage?

My husband and I will be catching the train from Vienna to Venice at the end of November. I am ready to book our seats on the oebb website. I would like to know which coach to choose when it comes to the selection of coach. We will have two medium sized (64cm) suitcases, a smaller suitcase and a small pack each. Will it be easier to load and store luggage on an open coach or have I got it backwards? I know in compartments there are 6 seats but where would we place our luggage?

I would value your suggestions in this.

Thanks.

You will be able to store your luggage on overhead boards in your compartment.

Or between the seats (in the space between the backs of the seats) in the open coach.

Look here for further options about luggage:

Luggage in compartment coaches can be stored in the overhead racks... small luggage also under the seats...

In open coaches, luggage can be stored also overhead, at the end of the coaches or between the seats...

Don%26#39;t worry, everyone can find storage space...

On one of the trains we were on in Austria, there were compartments of six. Our suitcases were too large/bulky for the overhead racks, and we did like others who had large luggage - left it out in the corridor against the wall.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

Robbie I want to thank you for the excellent post you make with translating the German to English steps in the booking form on oebb. It was a lifesaver. I could manage the first section on my own but when it got to the compartment selection I was stuck until I read your post to another question. It has been invaluable. And it is so much cheaper to use oebb and the Sparschiene. On the raileurope site I had a quote of $226Au for the same train trip. With the Sparschiene we are only paying 29 euro each. A hugh saving.

Tripadvisor is such a fountain of information.

Thanks everyone.
