Tipping

What is a guide for tipping here? I am so tired after the overnight flight and I don%26#39; t want to commit any faux pas. The hotel has a breakfast room and the server girl brings coffee. What should she get? The Hotel maids? The driver to the airport ( c%26amp;k not taxi) Thanks!

In restaurants, we usually round up the bill by 10 per cent maximum. If you give a bit less, it%26#39;s not a faux pas, especially if the sum is round. For example: the bill is 9.40, you give the waiter a bill of 10.- and say %26quot;Danke%26quot;. Or the bill is 14.- and you make it 15.-

In hotels, it%26#39;s not customary to tip single employees separately, rather you may leace a sum to be divided amongst them at the end of your stay when you leave the place.

Taxi is about 10 per cent, not more.

Tipping in Europe is only needed, if a service is far above average...

Don%26#39;t tip the server girls in the breakfast room... I%26#39;ve never seen or done this. You could probably do this, if you can%26#39;t walk and they bring you a full breakfast from the buffet... but otherwise they would just look upset... they get full wages.

Hotel maids maybe one € per day... but only if anything is excellent. Porters 1 € per item. I%26#39;d tip the driver only, if his service is far above average (helping you with luggage, giving you informations and so)... then only 2 € or something like that.

In restaurants and coffee houses, you can round up... let%26#39;s say, if it%26#39; 12,50 ... round up to 13 (same with taxis if service was good). In fine restaurants, tip about 5-8%... or whatever you feel is appropriate ... don%26#39;t worry too much, every tip is appreciated and nobody will be offended if you don%26#39;t tip.

Aside from trying to get adjusted from an uncomfortable overnight flight on Austrian Airlines and the much cooler temperatures than Philadelphia was having it is a great place. We are staying at the Small Luxury Hotel Das Tyrol and so far it is a winner. The breakfast buffet is fabulous and the location is superb. We can easily walk to most everything and the U bahn and trams are a hop and a skip away. The Billa grocery store is a few blocks up the street and they have snacks and sandwiches and wines and stuff. I hope anyone that can visit does make the effort. It is well worth it.
