driving from vienna to venice

We are planning to drive from Vienna to Venice in December and are wondering what the condition of the roads will be like. Is there generally a lot of snow and ice? Also can anyone recommend any towns or restaurants between the two where we should stop? Thanks so much I really appreciate any help!

Since yesterday we are havinh heavy snow falls in Vienna and there are a lot of problems concerning the traffic....

So be prepared that it might be snowing and be icy! Winter tyres are necessary and you should have chains in addition.

The drive will be via Graz, Klagenfurt, Villach and Udine to Venice and will last about 7-8 hours according to the driving conditions (587km). The drive will be very scenic.

You could f.e. stop in Klagenfurt at the lake Woerthersee.

Or a good recommendation would also be - doing a short side trip into the awesome Gailtal valley (after having passed Villach, just before the Italian border) and stay one night at the really nice Biohotel Daberer:
