I%26#39;m traveling from Munich to Salzburg on Dec 31, 2007 and coming back to Munich the next day, Jan 1, 2008. I want to arrive at Salzburg in the morning (9-10am) and leave it in the evening (7-8pm). I found that I can buy a train ticket for $70-105 USD, but I wonder if I need to buy it now. If possible, I%26#39;d rather buy it at the train station there so that my tip can be more flexible. My question is, do train tickets tend to be sold out for new year%26#39;s eve and new year day? Or is it ok to buy it on spot?
I%26#39;ll really appreciate it if you could answer my question. Thank you.

Hi Allie
I%26#39;ve had a quick look at the OBB site (Austrian Railways)
www.obb.at
and there are two trains that might suit you:
Depart Munich: 07:26 Arrive Salzburg: 08:58
Depart Munich: 07:42 Arrive Salzburg: 09:47
Returning:
Depart Salzburg: 19:03 Arrive Munich: 20:34
Depart Salzburg: 19:18 Arrive Munich: 21:12
Depart Salzburg: 20:13 Arrive Munich: 22:19
Normally, on the OBB site, if a train is popular they recommend booking but I can%26#39;t see the recommendation that you book for either of these trains so you should be OK. Ultimately I think it depends on how you feel. When we went from Salzburg to Vienna for the day we were told there was no need to book, but for our own peace of mind we still bought the tickets the previous day.
It%26#39;s a shame you%26#39;re not staying overnight in Salzburg as it is Silvesternacht and there will be spectacular firework displays over the city.

The train tickets cannot be sold out, so it absolutely does not matter when you buy them.

You really might want to purchase a %26quot;Baynerticket%26quot;, which is good on all non-IC (Inter-City) and non-EC (Euro-City) trains in Bavaria --- including the border town of Salzburg. Since there is an RE or RB (regional trains) every hour from Munich to Salzburg, this is a great way to save money. And really, the RE or RB trains (which stop at more stations than EC or IC trains) only take about 15 minutes longer to get to Salzburg.
This ticket is purchased for a particular date (you can buy it from an automatic ticket machine at the train station and save a couple Euros --- over buying it at the ticket window from a live person). I haven%26#39;t been since earlier this year, so I%26#39;m not sure if they raised the price, but it is about 20 Euros. It is good from 9:00am for the rest of the day on weekdays (actually 3:00am the next day) and all day on weekends. Further, it is valid for an entire day for unlimited travel.
If you are one person, then purchase a %26quot;Bayernticket Single%26quot;. If you are a couple people, you buy the regular Bayernticket and you%26#39;ll save even more.

Thank you so much for your prompt and helpful replies. I really appreciate it.

The Bayern-Ticket is really a good idea to travel for few money. Many RB and RE trains between Munich ans Salzburg, they are als quite comfortable.
You can buy the Bayern ticket also from any ticket machine or bus driver in Munich or anywhere else in Bavaria, it%26#39;s valid for all means of local and regional transport, so also subway, s-bahn, tram, bus and so in Munich (but only for train to Salzburg Hbf., not for public transport there as it%26#39;s not Bavaria).
You can find more information at:
bahn.de/international/…laender_tickets.shtml
Cost of the Bayern Ticket (up to 5 people) is € 27, about $ 38
Cost of the Bayern Ticket Single is € 19, about $ 28.
