Help with opera and events at New Years

We will be in Vienna Dec. 24th and again the 28th - 1st. I see that the Barber of Seville and Die Fledermaus are playing. Anything else playing during those dates, including operettas or musicals? We are a family with girls 12 and 16 years. Any suggestions about which would be most enjoyable for that age? Also, help with understanding categories of seating would be great. Just looking at the floor plan doesn%26#39;t help know where reasonable seating is located. With six of us to buy tickets, we can%26#39;t buy the most expensive seats but we do want reasonably good seats. Any places to buy tickets that have better prices than others? I noticed that some places are already sold out.

Are there also some concerts in churches we should find out about for the 24th? (We plan to ski on the 25th) And if we wanted to go to the Christmas market at the palace, how long does it take to get there from downtown? (Our family has visited palaces before and are not sure that visiting another is the best way to use our time but there may be nothing else to do on the 24th.)

Any reasonably priced meals available during the holidays? It would help us to budget to have an idea how much a restaurant dinner averages per person in dollars. For example, a medium priced restaurant near my home costs $15 while an expensive one costs $25 per person. But will the prices be higher than normal on the 24th and 25th?

Are there dinner and river cruises in Vienna? I saw one advertised for Budapest. If so, is the food good and how is the price? I also saw a dinner and concert show advertised and was wondering if that is good.

Suggestions for family appropriate activities the night of the 31st would also be appreciated. Where do you have to go to see fireworks? What is there to do on the 1st of january?

A lot of questions, but we appreciate any help.

Going to Schoenbrunn palace and the Christmas market there will take you about 30 minutes (including walking to/from the subway station and the subway ride). I do not know which hotel you will be staying at, but you have to take the green subway line U4 in direction of Huetteldorf until %26quot;Schoenbrunn%26quot; station and then it is a5 minutes walk. The U4 leaves from %26quot;Schwedenplatz%26quot; or %26quot;Karlsplatz%26quot; (near Opera house).

About restaurants - you will find all kind of different categories of prices - usually food is quite affordable in Vienna. Some recommendations (you can look at the menu and see the prices):

Wow, great info, than you very much.

I will check out about Rebecca. But do you want to give any opinions on how well rated are Die Fledermaus and Barber of Seville?

I still would like some help to know which category or where you want seats at the opera to have a reasonable view without spending an outrageous amount. For example, if Category C tickets cost 15 Euros more than D and the view is a lot better, it is worth paying the extra price. But if you only get a little better view and it costs 25Euros more, it is not worth it to us to pay more (times 6 people).

Any recommendations on which category has fairly good seating at the opera houses or which seat sections to try to get if they are available?

On New Year%26#39;s Eve we love to just wander round the inner city which is full of revellers. Every central district square is transformed into a differnt music venue for the night ranging from classical to pop to hip hop to latin. There are loads of kiosks selling mulled wine, punch and snacks and many of the famous cafes, restaurants and bars set up outside stalls. You will be able to get a guide and map and also buy a souvenir mug which you can carry around all night and refill at the various stalls. Public transport runs throughout the night if you%26#39;re not staying in the center. It%26#39;s all great fun.

Fireworks in Vienna are usually set off by the revellers themselves so you can see them everywhere. My favourite spot is in front of the Burgtheater looking across the Ringstrasse to the front of the City Hall (Rathaus). You%26#39;ll see plenty without feeling squashed. The traditional center point is in St Stephan%26#39;s Square to hear the mighty cathedral bell ring at midnight. However I%26#39;ve never been able to hear it because of the absolute cacophany of sound. And the square is seriously (almost dangerously) crowded with people setting off fireworks at close quarters and dropping bottles and glasses on the floor. If you get trapped in the crowd its impossible to get out until everyone else does.

This YouTube video gives you a flavour of the area in front of the cathedral.

With younger children , the area near to Stephansdom, Graben - the very city center is OK to be in earlier in the evening on New Years but not near to Midnight.

Many set off fireworks directly in the crowds and it is very dangerous in my opinion. Rathaus much better as mentioned.

Regarding quality of music and Opera- Vienna is a Music capital of the World and productions are normally of the highest standard at the major venues.

Fledermaus is a Classic production and is performsed regularly to sold out audiences . It is a tradition to have this operetta by Strauss to be performed in varirous venues including the State Opera and Volksoper during the Christmas - New Years time.- especially New Years Eve.

It is best to buy your tickets directly from the venue- also least costly to do it this way.

I believe you are probably much too late to get tickets for these performances during this very busy period.

You could try ticket agencies or xyour hotel concierge but will pay a very high premium for tickets if available.

Many Churches will have good qfor information-

University Church, Maltese Church, Minoriten ,Stephansdom are a few with offeringsof quality music during this time - as you tour the city look for their placards

The Dinner - concert combinations are often over priced in my opinion and you can find better food and music elsewhere.
