Hi,
Myself and partner are considering a %26#39;last minute%26#39; break to Austria around 30th November/1st December - 4th/5th December.
Originally we had just intended to fly into Salzburg and spend a few days but now feel that it would be a shame to not spend time in Vienna (perhaps having a night out.. meal etc...)
While we will visit historic sights etc we are more looking towards relaxing and taking in the stunning scenery (perhaps with walks etc) We would also like to visit the Salzkammergut area. Hopefully the weather will be good enough around this time.
Accomodation in Salzberg and Vienna should be easy enough for us to find. We will probably fly into Salzberg and fly out from Vienna - but are unsure of the best way to get between the two (we are open to perhaps a train journey and overnight stop?) and also how to split the time between the two?
Alternatively we may be willing just to spend time in Salzberg for the 4 days - is there enough to do in the surrounding area (to see the scenery etc...)
Or perhaps someone can suggest a better itinerary!
Many thanks,
Antony

if you want to relax and enjoy the scenery you might be better off staying in Salzburg for the whole for days...
...but of course it is also worth visiting Vienna - especially with all the Christmas markets and this special atmosphere in the city at Christmas time.
For going from Salzburg to Vienna I would take the train - it is very easy and will take you 3:40 - 3:00 hours only (direct connection).

As your aim is relaxing, maybe you could spend 3 days in Salzburg (one day trip to the Salzkammergut, if the weather is ok) first and then leave on the 4th early morning for 1 night in Vienna and then fly out from Vienna. Although this is only a short stay for visiting Vienna, you could still get a good first impression and come back again another time!
Hotel recommendation for Salzburg:
Hotel Friesacher - it is located in an upscale suburb with good pubic transport for going into town and it offers more relaxation than staying in the city center which will be busy and crowded with tourists at this time of the year:
