My husand and I are coming to Vienna next weekend. We will stay Friday, Saturday %26amp; Sunday nights and are looking for somewhere to stay. We would like somewhere with easy transport to the football as he will be watching the football match on Friday. We%26#39;d like somewhere central to the sightseeing and places to eat %26amp; drink for Saturday %26amp; Sunday. I%26#39;d like somewhere with it%26#39;s own bar and maybe restaurant as I%26#39;ll be by myself probably on Friday night and I won%26#39;t want to go out and about by myself. Hope someone can help. Many thanks. Alfmeister.

You can choose any hotel in the old town / Inner Stadt, as the stadium has very good reinforced public transport connections on match days from Schwedenplatz and Praterstern underground stations.
If you are searching for a hotel thats really near the staium, the selection isn´t too big:
Vienna Hilton Danube **** (this has a bar and a nice restaurant, but rest of public transport connections are a bit poor and hotel is far off the center)
Austria Trend Hotel Wiener Messe ***
IBIS Wien Messe *** (both in an a bit dodgy location)
The following hotels are nearer to the center, and already along or near to the same tramline that goes to the stadium:
MERCURE WIEN CITY *** to ****
MERCURE IMLAUER*** to ****
AUSTRIA CLASSIC HOTEL NORDBAHN ***
CITY HOTEL TABOR (not sure aboutr category)
Hotel CITY CENTRAL ****
Hotel KUNSTHOF ***
Hotel STEFANIE**** (has a restaurant)
Pls. check the reviews section for commets, I am onlöy listing them here without evaluation, I don´t think they will all have a restaurant, but I am sure the reception staff will be able to advise you about a nice place where you can dine by yourself without any problems, Vienna is a very respectfull town towards females travellers, at least thats what I have been told !

Maybe you would like the Marriott as it is centrally located in the 1st district and they have their own sports bar to watch games - Champions Bar.

I think Fritz%26#39;s advice about the first district is sound. Your husband will have good transport links to the football, you will be very central for sightseeing and the hotel will probably have its own restaurant or there%26#39;ll be one on the same block.
There will be a myriad of restaurants for you to choose from within walking distance of any hotel in the first district. But if your reluctance to go out alone is based on your experiences of UK cities then you%26#39;re in for a very pleasant surprise. Vienna is one of the safest cities in Europe and doesn%26#39;t have the culture prevalent in much of the UK that any girl on her own is %26quot;fair game%26quot;.

Especially on this night you are aiming at, the city will be geared up with police all over the town to its max., as the local emergency forces see this as the last big test before the Euro 2008. So, preassuming everything aroudn the game stays cool, you should have a wonderfull evening even by yourself, and it will be guarded by hundreds of Viennas hopefully friendly police-officers at every corner of the city ....:-)

P.S.: Whats your husbands bet on the result ? Things didn´t go too well for England the last few weeks, and we were successfull against Ivory coast, so I say I wouldn´t be surprised if its draw !

I would suggest Nordbahn hotel. We stayed there 2 times with our children. The hotel is very clean, has a good buffet breakfast and the staff are very helpful. It is very central just two stops by the U-Bahn to Stephanplatz. Near the hotel there restaurants where you can eat and the area is very safe.

Thanks for your help everyone. We have settled on the Starlight Suiten Salgries as it seemed central and was a good price.
I would like to see the Christmas Markets while we are in Vienna to take a few small presents home but I think we will be there a little bit early. Are there any Christmas Markets that will be open 17th %26amp; 18th November do you know?
How cold is Vienna at the moment?
Fritz - my husband says 3-1 to Austria but I think he may have been joking! Or maybe not since Rooney is injured. We%26#39;ll see.
I%26#39;ll write up a report whenI get back. It%26#39;s my 40th birthday whilst in Vienna so I hope it will be a good one.
Regards.

Vienna is cold but still nice at the moment, we had a little bit of snow yesterday in Vienna, but this morning its fairly clear, only a few clouds, sun is coming through nicely, and its supposed to go up to 10° Celsius during the day. But I was out %26amp; about last night, and the evenings are getting fairly chilly already ....
The hotel is not bad, its right in Viennas going out area, the %26quot;Bermudadreieck%26quot;, could be a bit noisy, depending on the windows, but I assume they have taken care of that. Its central, the big public transport hub of %26quot;Schwedenplatz%26quot; is just about 5 minutes walking from there, and thats also where the trams to the stadium are leaving for your husband.
This is a very nice cocktail bar just across the road from your hotel:
http://www.dinos.at/ , their strawberry daiquiri is to die for !
%26quot;Planters Club%26quot; Cocktail bar, and the adjoining restaurant %26quot;Livingstone%26quot; could also be very nice for a dinner, but check for reviews, I have never dined there myself:
http://www.plantersclub.com/set.htm
The webpage is in german, but on the restaurant page, the winelist and menue are in both languages.
I am an optimist, but 3:1 ? I would be happy about a draw, 1:1 or a 2:2 again just like in 2004 ! :-)

Thanks Fritz. Does that translate as Bermuda Triangle? If so, it%26#39;s mentioned in the England Football Fans information for the match. We%26#39;ve requested a quiet room so we%26#39;ll see what we get. Thanks for tip on the Daquiri I%26#39;ll try and get in there and treat myself. I%26#39;d usually go for wine but I%26#39;ll have a cocktail or 2 for my birthday.
Regards.
