Save yourself some dosh and go to the Volksoper - tix are half the price of the Staatsoper and the shows are still of a high standard. They%26#39;re doing Figaro (in German with English surtitles - less screechy than Italian!) on 13 and 16 Feb. It%26#39;s a lovely production and one I would gladly hear again. Tix go on sale on 1 January online at www.volksoper.at (German site). Easy to get to the VO - take tram 40, 41 or 42 from the underground tramstop at the Schottentor.

The above posters give good information.

I too a Volksoper fan - but if you are a great opera fan - take a close look at the State Opera.

They offer Aida on the 13 and 16 . Conducted by Zubin Mehta - yes more expensive but a true special evening .!

i am blessed i called the vienna state opera box office got a ticket for a performance of die walkerie 12/20 at 5:30pm - my ticket cost me 153 euros ground floor. the lady said for that performance there are quie a few sealts (i am not expecting golden age performances but at last i am going to the vienna state oper. also went to a ticket broker for the volksoper their best seat is 94 euros (net 75 euros plus commission) probably did a stupid thing should have called volksopera box office like the vienna state opera. seeing a performance 0f grafin mariza by emerich kalman for 12/16.

forgot to mention the ticket broker on the internet is vienna concerts and i left the tickets for the state opera and volksoper at the box office. i amk pleasantly surprised that i was able to get tickets for both performances .

It%26#39;s an entertaining production of Gräfin Mariza at the VO this season - you should enjoy it! I am going that night too (and hoping to see Sándor Németh play Populescu, tho%26#39; it%26#39;s a shame Marko Kathol is not appearing as Zsupan that night - he%26#39;s hysterically funny. But we have a good Lisa in Andrea Bogner). There are a few of the top category seats (75 euros) left but none in the front rows of the Parkett where I like to sit so you probably did well to get a seat from a broker. Have fun!

rol. thank you for your reply - i have never seen this operatta before they don%26#39;t have them in new york or philadelphia - a shame - i know the operatta as countess maritza and only by recordings - the names you mentioned are not familiar to me but i look forward to this because i love emerich kalman%26#39;s music (forgive my spelling).

A little extra information -

always try to book directly through the Volksoper- you get the best price and they often have excelent tickets if you book quickly after sales open.

Gräfin Mariza and Csardasfürstin by Emmerich Kalman have always been favorites of mine and many in Vienna.

Some of the music is a little similar - a nice mix of %26quot; gypsy type %26quot;

Sa%26#39;ndor Nemeth has been a long time favorite of the Vienna audience. Now he is primarily found as Feri in Csardasfürstin and in Mariza. plus a few other roles.

He always seems to add dignity to the stage.

Many japanese and asian guests really like his performance in Csardas as he sings one of the 3rd act song chorus in japanese.

I believe this may come from trips to Asia with the Volksoper for some years.

He is a gentleman and much liked by the Volksoper ensemble. I believe his wife formerly sang at the Volksoper also.

I just hope that he continues for years to come .

He has often performed with Josef Luftensteiner in many roles. They made a great addition to any operetta.

Also in the performance mentioned is Rudolf Wasserlof , an old, old favorite of Vienna-

Grafin Mariza makes for a good evening of music.

thank you - i so look forward to seeing this operatta in the united states there is very little operatta (with exception of one or two like the merry widow and strauss defladermouse(sorry can%26#39;t spell it) otherwise there is almost nothing we have opera and musicals - i don%26#39;t think countess maritza was ever done in the us otherwisw i would have seen it. it is wonderful that vienna puts on these operattes.

Thanks very much for that Vertical; that is most interesting!

I had the great pleasure of watching Herr Németh play Feri in the first performance of Die Csárdásfürstin I attended at the Volksoper a few years ago, and I thought he was wonderful - a very distinctive voice, and the Cossack dance in the third act really brought the house down! I hope he may play the role again when the production is repeated this coming spring. I%26#39;ve seen many others play Feri since, but they were never as good!

If any operetta fan owns the Deutschegrammaphon DVD of Die Csárdásfürstin, they wil have the pleasure of watching Herr Nemeth as a young man play the role of Boni. The film is great fun, with marvellous singing from Anna Moffo and René Kollo.

The DVD of the Volksoper%26#39;s own recent production of Kálmán%26#39;s Die Herzogin von Chicago might also interest operetta fans - the principals are very good, and there is a hilarious comic double act between Herr Németh and Josef Luftensteiner running through the show.

It is a great treat to come to the Volksoper and hear the operetta which we don%26#39;t get in England either, except Merry Widow and Fledermaus in English (ick!) I don%26#39;t think a trip to Vienna would be complete without hearing an operetta, for preference Kálmán!
