I will be traveling to Vienna and Salzburg over Christmas and want to stop at Melk. i do not have a car and will be traveling to Salzburg from Vienna by train. Is it possible to stop at the Melk Abbey on the way via train? Thanks for the suggestions.

You can take any express train from Salzburg to Sankt Pölten, there you would have to exchange to a local train to Melk. The abbey is about 15 - 20 min. walk from the station. After your visit, you can a regional train to Vienna.
The website of the abbey: http://www.stiftmelk.at/englisch/index.html

Actually we will be starting in Vienna and heading to Salzburg and were hoping to make a stop in Melk on our way to Salzburg. Thanks for the reply however.

Works the same way the other direction: Regional train from Vienna Westbahnhof to Melk, see the abbey, then take the regional line on to sankt Pölten, and change there on a faster train to Salzburg, should make for a nice day trip !
