Studying in Vienna

I plan on studying in Vienna from January to July. I have a choice between living on the altengasse in hietzing or on the lilienbrunngasse in the leopoldstadt district. I know that hietzing is more suburban and green unlike the leopoldstadt which I hear is one of the uglier parts of Vienna even though it is right next to the center and closer to the university. Which would you recommend?

Sorry, but I cannot find an Altengasse on my map .... But I know Lilienbrunngasse, and its absolutely not in the uglier part of the town, its just across the canal from the old town, and prob. 3-5 min. walking from %26quot;Schwedenplatz%26quot;, a major public transport exchange points with 2 underground lines, trams ... but you are on the not so touristic side of the canal there, so you should find good infrastructure as well like supermarkets and other stuff ...

I don´t know which campus you will be on, but from the station across the bridge, the tram takes you to the Main University complex in approx. 10 min. or to the Economics campus by underground in approx. the same time (4 stops), I think it would be the better location, Hietzing can be a bit far out, especially when you have to take nightbuses or cabs late at night, much easier in the center !

What you heard about the 2nd district is only partly true - there are also nice parts in this district and the advantage of the Lilienbrunngasse is - as Fritz already mentioned - that you are just across the Danube channel, right at the border to the 1st district. maybe a 10 minutes walk from St. Stephan´s cathedral, the inner city center!

As a student I would choose the Lilienbrunngasse over any location in the 13th district, which is more beautiful and upscale, but more residential and further away from the city center and the university - also if you like going out at night the location in the 2nd district is a much better location - you would have to spend a lot of money on taxis if going all the way to Hietzing.

Sorry I meant to write Altgasse instead of Altengasse. So is it really that hard getting back out to Hietzing on weekend nights?

|||

Both Fritz and Ulrike live in Vienna so you can believe what they say!

Hietzing is not impossible to get to at night, but it%26#39;s obviously much easier to get to the Leopoldstadt as you can walk there from most anywhere you are likely to end up in the city centre or take a relatively short and inexpensive taxi ride.

The end of Leopoldstadt nearer to the Danube Canal and 1st District is fine. The district is a little dodgier at the end nearer the Danube River, but as nothing compared to the worst areas of L.A.

Johann Strauss lived not far from Lilienbrunngasse and if the area was good enough for the waltz king.....

I have just checked Altgasse, and its not as bad as it looked on the first view, its right next to the Schönbrunn palace-park and just about 5 minutes walk from the big public transport hub at %26quot;Hietzing / Kennedybrücke%26quot;, so really, it depends on where you will study, if its near to get there. In general, it will take you around 20 min. to get into the city center from there, after the closing of regular public transport at midnight, it will be about 40 - 50 min,. by nightbus, depending on the connections, or about € 20 for a cab, compared tio beeing able to walk home from most city center locations to the other flat ... But if you like it nice and green, and probably like the idea of having a huge park for your daily jogging just outisde the door, Altgasse could be nice as well ! Its really up to you !

Yes, Hietzing is nice and more green - but also very residential...whereas in the 2nd district there also live many students as it rents are cheaper and it is so close to the center; it is more lively!

It depends what you are looking for, but as a student I would prefer the 2nd district - travelling to the city center everyday can be tiresome after a while.

Here is some info on the 2nd district:

sorry, only in German, but it is intersting to see the map with restaurants, shops, etc.

In the 2nd district you have the Augarten and the huge Prater parks for recreation and jogging, which are both within easy reach. I think the 2nd district might be better suited for the typical needs of a student.

Vielen dank fuer eure Hilfe. I will definitely consider all of your advice and recommendations when making my decision which will still be a difficult one as both locations are now even more appealing especially the Lilienbrunngasse one. If you have any additional advice, I will be happy to listen as I don%26#39;t have to make my final decision for a week or two.

If you would tell us what you study, we could tell you how far both places are from your unis, the faculty buildings can be all over the town ...
