In February08, I%26#39;m going to Vienna - but want to take my family for a few days skiing - but essentially also want to find a ski resort (like Bad Gastein) with a Therme / Spa / Wellness centre. Bad Gastein is about 4 hours drive from Vienna - does anyone know of any good alternatives that are a little closer. - If not, what is the best recommendation (on a budget !) in Bad Gastein?
Thanks

No, unfortunately Bad Gastein and Bad Hofgastein are the closest villages to Vienna, which combine spa%26amp;skiing.
Do not know about any accomodation, but you may have a look here:
www.gastein.com/en-accommodation-index.htm
There are not too many which offer this combination in Austria.
Another - but even further away - option is the AquaDome in Laengenfeld near Soelden in the Tyrol:

Not really a thermal spas, but wellness hotels in the mountains:

If you are interested in really nice thermal spas without skiing then I would recommend the area of Eastern Styria which is about a 2 hours drive from Vienna:

Bad Waltersdorf

Bad Gleichenberg

Another recommendation near Bad Gleichenberg would be the following:
Why not staying at the awesome Castle of Kapfenstein and driving to different spas. Bad Gleichenberg is f.e. only about 10 km away. This castle is romantic and located in a hill in the Styrian wine country with a beautiful view of the countryside. Food is just excellent too.

Bad Tatzmannsdorf in the Burgenland is nice too:

I forgot Bad Kleinkirchheim - also good combination ski%26amp;spa:

There would be one more that comes into my mind, the %26quot;Panhans%26quot; on the Semmering, which is a little ski-resort just about an hour south of Vienna. The resort is not really big %26quot;only%26quot; 14km of slopes, but if you really just want to ski for a few days, it could be ok for you, but check for independent reviews of the hotel, I have never stayed there, and its a big place, a former big Grand Hotel, it was renovated a few years ago, but you might wann aget some opionions first:
panhans.at/hotel/…Hotel-Panhans.htm
I heard the hotel now has many Central %26amp; Eastern European guests, because it is not too far from the Austrian - Hungarian border, and the ski-resort gets very busy on weekends with Viennese ....
