My husband and I are planning a trip to Austria next fall, and we are definitely interested in doing some day hikes in the Alps while we are there. We haven%26#39;t thought through locations yet, but I was wondering if anyone generally knew when the best times to go for hiking, and also for cave tours. Is mid to late October too late (e.g., too cold, possibly snow)? Should we be aiming for late September/early October instead?

Many thanks!! As I can%26#39;t go in early September (because of my work schedule), I%26#39;m now going to revise my plans for possibly going in late August!!

We did a day hiking vacation through some of the Bavaria and Tirol Alps for almost three weeks in September this year. It started with Garmisch-Partenkirchen on September 6th, with cold, rainy weather. When the clouds lifted the next day, the snow line was down to a level just above the town (snow down to approx. 900 to 1000m elevation). With warmer weather, it melted over the next few days, but it made for wet conditions and we limited our hikes to lower elevations for a few days. We had nice weather, and no more snow, through the rest of our holiday.
I was struck by how similar the weather in the Alps is is to where I live in the Rockies at home (even though home is at higher elevation and further north), and based on our experience, and my knowledge of fall weather %26amp; hiking at home, I would say that October would be pushing it.
