Hi
My family will be visiting Graz in December. We are thinking of making a short trip either over to Budapest or Venice for 3 days. We can only decide on one destination and hopefully it will be a less tedious one because we will be travelling with 3 young kids and 2 grandparents. Any suggestion? Is is possible to drive or train ride will be more advisable and how long will be the journey from Graz?

Graz is a really beautiful and historic town, so you will have a nice time for sure. Look here for more info:

If I could choose for sidetrips I would choose Salzburg and/or Vienna! Or have you already visited these cities?

Both are also located in Austria and only in 2,5 - 4 hours distance by train.

If you really would like to go to Venice or Budapest:
I am not a big fan of Budapest, but Venice is not really nice at that time of the year.....

Hi Ulrike73
TQ so much for ur advice. Guess, we will just stick to our original plan of spending couple of days each in Graz, Innsbruck, Salzburg %26amp; Hallstatt. Do you think it%26#39;s wise of us to drive or to take the train? We thought if we drive, we can take it easy and do not need to adhere to train schedule. We are arriving in Graz on 22 Dec from Frankfurt and leaving on 31 so we have only a good 10 days to cover the more interesting places of the 3 cities above. We hope to stay a night in Hallstatt, is it necessary? Or a day trip will be good enough?

I think you plan seems to be very good - these cities will be awesome in winter time!
Driving will give you more flexibility, but be aware that driving in Austria in winter means that you have to expext roads that could be partly covered with snow or ice - you should be used to such driving conditions.
Otherwise you should take the train. It would be no problem travelling between these cities by train as they run frequently. And for Hallstatt you could join a guided tour from Salzburg.

If you want to stay overnight in the Salzkammergut area I would not stay in Hallstatt itself. Maybe stay at lake Wolfgangsee or in Salzburg directly as it is not too far, maybe 1 hour drive.
