Help! Salzburg to Prague by train.

What%26#39;s the best way to get from Salzburg to Prague? An overnight train would be preferred, unless connections are much easier in the morning.

This question has been asked before on these forums before, but it seems like the information is somewhat dated -- from 2005.

From what I read, it seems like the two main options are to connect in either Linz or Munich. Is one better/easier than the other? Also, how difficult is it to manage the various connections?

Thanks very much for your help. Travel would be on 11 or 12 December (Monday/Tuesday).

It seems like this is the most convenient (only one time change of trains) and fastest (6:06 hours) connection from Salzburg to Prague.

from Salzburg Hbf 15:34

(change trains in Linz)

arrival in Praha hl.n. 21:40

For further schedule inquieries look here:

As Ulrike says, that%26#39;s the best connection... OEC 163 + EC 100...

Changing trains is easy, can usually be done in 5 minutes (if you have to change platforms), if the train is on the same platform also in one minute. I think tracks 5+6 are the same platform... if not, there are escalators and an elevator available.

Thanks for your helpful response. Generally speaking, how much would a one way fare cost if purchased at the station?

|||

As far as I know, about 40 to 45 € ... oneway, 2nd class.

Thanks for your helpful replies.

I just have one final question: I notice there appears to be on train on the schedule with no connections -- the D 206 departing 04:47 and arriving in Prague 11:40.

This train, while very early, would probably work the best. Is it difficult to arrange for a taxi at 4:00 to take us to the train station? Are there any special considerations one should make in choosing such an early morning train?

Again, thanks for your help.

The cheapest way would be to take regional RB and RE trains from Salzburg into Germany continuing towards Prague.

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

From: Salzburg

click on Via

To: Prague

Via: Firth im Wald

Time: 09.00

click Search connection

at the next page, the first selection has all travel on RB and RE trains. check the box for the train leaving at 09:11. You will see that this route involves 3 changes but the advantage here is that you can travel as far as Furth im Wald using a Bayern-Ticket and the last connection listed, RE train 453, goes through Furth im Wald.

You would use the Bayern-Ticket to travel from Salzburg to Furth im Wald and another ticket to travel from Furth im Wald to Prague. You can buy both tickets from the DB ticket desk [the Germany train company] at the Salzburg station. The Bayern-Ticket would cost 21 € and the 2nd class fare, on RE 453, from Furth i Wald to Prague is 18.70 € for a total of 39.70 €.

Info about the Bayern-Ticket can be found at - www.bayern-takt.de/public_main_modul.php…

I would not go via Furth im Wald... many changes, only trains of local transport, longer travel time.. even though it is a bit cheaper.

Do you really want to get up this early? 4:47 is during the night! You won%26#39;t have any problem to get a taxi... best is to inform the reception the evening before... they will book it (don%26#39;t worry, no extra fee).

One problem will be that at this time, no shop will be opened, so you can%26#39;t buy any food or drinks... and the train itself consists of quite oldstylish czech coaches, no restaurant or bar.

It%26#39;s your decision... but I%26#39;d sleep longer and catch the afternoon train.

Hi- I went from Salzburg to Prague via Firth Im Wald- there were 3 changes Salzburg to Prague- went just fine. German rail pass covered cost from Salzburg to Firth Im Wald, so that was handy. At Firth Im Wald paid the conductor on train (border crossing) 7 euro per person from Firth Im Wald to Prague. There were others in our car as well without further tickets to Prague and they paid the same as us with no problems. We found this the way to go. If you will have a German rail pass, this might be helpful.

Was not able to buy drinks/snacks on train in Czech Republic, so if you like to munch stock up!
