Day or overnight trip to Venice

I will be in Going, Austria on 8th - 15th Dec. 2007. Since I%26#39;m in the area I%26#39;d love to hop over to Venice. Would it be worth the time, effort and cost? If it is feasible, from which station would be the best option to catch the train? Is a day trip sufficient or should I overnight in Venice?

Many thanks for views.

If you would like to go there I would highly recommend either an overnight stay in Venice or an overnight trip as the journey from Going to Venice will take you by bus and train at least 7:14 hours and at least 2 changes of bus/train....

Look here for schedule inquieries:

There are also flights from Innsbruck via Vienna to Venice by Austrian Airlines which would cost from 275 Euro (return ticket).

Another possibility would be renting a car and going from Going to Venice would take you about 5 hours.

I personally think that according to the quite long and rather complicated (if you choose public transport) journey it is not worth the trip, especially at that time of the year.

I would think of making trips to Salzburg, Innsbruck, Vienna or Füssen (Castle of Neuschwanstein, Germany) instead - in these cities you could also enjoy the beautiful Christmas markets at that time of the year:

Hi Ulrike,

It does sound complicated and tiring. Maybe I should just enjoy what Austria has to offer and make another trip to Italy.

Thank you for the advice. Much appreciated!!

Austria has really much to offer - especially at that time of the year - maybe have a look at the Christmas markets:

Hi Ulrike,

Think I%26#39;ll do just that and savour Austria as much as possible.

Can you tell me more about Going itself? Stuff like:-

1. How big is this town? In the valley or in the mountains?

2. What is its speciality, particularly in early December?

3 How far away from the nearest train or bus station and the next

town?

4. Would it be better for us to rent a car? Only thing is I%26#39;m not

familiar with left-hand drive and never drove in winter conditions

as my country is tropical with summer all year round.

5. What about selection of restaurants?

6. Is it easy to get authentic Muslim (halal) or Kosher food?

Otherwise we%26#39;ll have to survive on vegetarian food and bread %26amp;

eggs/fish!!

7. Does it have shops/supermarkets that sell Asian staple products

like rice etc?

I%26#39;m sorry to ask so many questions but whilst I can get more information on my other destination, Achenkirch, I don%26#39;t seem to get info on Going.

Thanking you in advance and have a nice day!!

First of all I have never been to Going myself - I have always stayed in Kitzbuehel, the famous skiing town nearby.

kitzalps.com/en/kitzbuehel-and-its-holiday.h…

Going itself is not a town, but a small village in the valley with 1700 inhabitants and more a quiet, relaxing, but good skiing area:

http://www.wilderkaiser.info/en/going.html

tiscover.at/at/…home.html

http://www.skiwelt.at/intro.php?l=en

Its location is really nice because of the nearby mountains - %26quot;Wilder Kaiser%26quot;. And its most famous hotel is the %26quot;Stanglwirt%26quot;, a posh hotel were also many celebrities like staying at, also because it is close to Kitzbuehel:

http://www.stanglwirt.com/

As Going is really small, the choice of restaurants and shops will be limited - obviously there are two Italian restaurants and the restaurants of the hotels. But you can always go to Kitzbuehel

( 8547 inhabitants) which offers a lot more choice of different restaurants an shops - there you will also find Asian cuisine:

http://www.kitzbuehel.com/english.asp

www.kitzbuehel.com/en/content.asp?ID=265

http://www.kitzbuehel.com/en/infoseite.asp?Thema=Restaurant+

It will only take you between 20 and 40 minutes by bus - depending on which bus/buses you take:

http://www.kitzbuehel.com/en/infoseite.asp?Thema=Restaurant+

St. Johann in Tirol (8500 inhabitants) is also even closer:

ferienregion.at/en/information-st-johann-tir…

it will take you 15 minutes by bus.

About renting a car...I do not know what you will exactly be doing in Going? Will go skiing or just walking and relaxing?

Ulrike,

TQ very much for the info.

Well, never skied before but would like to learn some basic moves. Is there a ski school in Going? What about Christmas markets?

Mostly I%26#39;d like to roam/walk the countryside, take photos of the scenic views and pretty much relaxing and annual bonding time with my family.

However I%26#39;m also thinking of venturing out of Going, like making a day trip to Salzburg. It%26#39;s not too far, is it? What can I cover in Salzburg in one day?? Maybe Vienna is too far but I%26#39;m prepared to be a little adventurous and will consider nearby areas like St Johann in Tirol, Kirchberg and Kitzbuehel.

Would welcome suggestions on stuff I shouldn%26#39;t miss as I do not know when I%26#39;ll be back in Austria again.

Many thanks for all comments.

There will be a Christmas Market in Going, but obviously only on the 19th of Dec. Best is do ask there when you arrive as the locals will have more detailed infos.

But I do know that there Christmas markets ....:

in Kitzbuehel:

1. - 24th Dec.

Wed -Fri 3pm tp 8pm

Sat 10am - 8 pm

Sun 2 pm-8pm

it will be just beautiful as the town itself is really cute and with all the lights and stands selling Christmas goods, drinks and food, some singing and other Christmas music, ...

Here are links, but the websites are in German only, maybe look at the pictures:

www.kitzbuehel.com/de/content.asp?ID=103

www.kitzalps.com/de/advent-in-den-bergen.html

in Ellmau:

Sat 08.12.04, Ellmau

in Kirchberg:

Sun 09.12.2007

1pm

in Westendorf:

Sat 08.12.2007

I do not know if they start then or just last for one day, but I think they last just for one day there.

http://www.kitzalps.com/en/events/default.asp

From 14-16th Dec. there will be the winter opening event in Kitzbuehel with all kind of activities:

www.kitzbuehel.com/en/pauschalinfo.asp…

Here is a link to a website which gives an overview about all different kind of sights/excursions/museums...in this region:

kitzalps.com/en/sights-and-excursion-destina…

About the skiing school in Going - yes there is one:

http://www.schischule-going.at/

www.skiwelt.at/index.php…

Going to Salzburg by train and/or bus will take you between 2, 5 to 3 hours. You will be able to see the most interesting sights within one day - and just enjoy the beautiful Christmas atmosphere in the historic city center.

To Innsbruck: 2 hours.
