Hello! We are wondering if Hallstatter See (Salzkammergut Hallstatt) is a must-see. We%26#39;ll be in Salzburg in late Nov. for 2 nights.
If it%26#39;s worth the trip, should we go on a day trip or should we drop by there on the way to Vienna? We%26#39;ll be travelling by train. Thanks a lot!

i would say that Hallstatt is a must-see - this area, the Salzkammergut, is one of the most beautiful areas in Austria.
As you will be travelling by train/bus I would recommend doing it as a day-trip combined with visiting some other beautiful villages in that area like St. Wolfgang, Gmunden, ...

Maybe you would like to join a guided tour through the Salzkammergut area:

Hi,
I%26#39;m assuming that with 2 nights in Salzburg you%26#39;ll really have 1 full day. If so, I%26#39;d spend the day seeing Salzburg instead of travelling to Hallstatt. We did a day trip to Hallstatt last Oct. and we spent a few hours walking around. While Hallstatt is a very small town in a beautiful location, if this is your first trip to Salzburg, I%26#39;d stay there for the full day. Salzburg is absolutely wonderful and very easy to see on foot!

Thank you very much for your helpful advice. We will be in Salzburg for about 2 full days. I%26#39;m now looking into how to get to the area. Still debating whether to make it as a daytrip from Salzburg or if it is more convenient dropping by on the way to Vienna. What do you think?

Do spend a night in Hallstatt. Spend the night in a nice lakefront hotel/gasthof and eat dinner by the water.
When you take the train south from Attnang-Puchheim (off the main Salzburg to Vienna track), be sure to sit on the right-hand side. It will give you a fabulous view of Hallstattersee and the town.
While in Hallstatt, be sure to visit Dachstein and the ice and salt caves.

Then get back on a northbound train, go back to Attnang-Puchheim, and go to Vienna.
However, keep in mind, that Salzkammergut is full of great towns to visit ---- and you could easily spend a couple weeks in this most beautiful region of Austria. Personally, I visit this region about 3 times each year during all seasons. Favorite place: Altaussee.

If you were going by car I would recommend dropping by on your way to Vienna, but as you would like to stick to public transport I would go on a guided tour on the second day of you trip and take the train from Salzburg to Vienna in the evening.

Thanks for all the great tips! We%26#39;d love to stay there but only have the option of dropping by from salzburg (morning departure) en route to vienna by train. Additional tips would be most appreciated!
