Salzburg for a day!

We are going to Vienna over the Easter weekend and would like to visit Salzburg for a day and we%26#39;ll take the train.

Is it better to arrange a city tour or just try to see the sights on our own?

Hello, Salzburg is a very small city so you would be able to see the sights on your own very easily. A trip up to the fortress is a must. The funicular railway is the best way up as it takes less than a minute (it%26#39;s a steep walk otherwise). The cathedral, Mozart%26#39;s birthplace, the horse pond, etc are all within a few minutes walk of each other. If you take a look on the Salzburg tourism website:

http://www2.salzburg.info/sehenswertes.html

you will see lots of things to visit. Mirabelgarten is a few minutes walk across the river, anyone will tell you where it is if you%26#39;re unsure.

Many people take the city tour in a horse drawn carriage. I%26#39;ve never done this but it does look a lovely way to see the city (but it doesn%26#39;t go up to the fortress). I believe the drivers give you an info commentary as you drive round, but I think ti%26#39;s quite expensive.

When you arrive by train you need to take either a taxi or a bus to the old city. The area around the station does not give an accurate impression of Salzburg as it%26#39;s not a nice part of town.

LiZR gives you a very good description of Salzburg in one day. I agree with her that seeing the city in a horse drawn carriage is a long and expensive way and, in my opinion, you get more info. than you can digest. I also agree that if you are more than one person, you might as well get a taxi to take you into the old city. The Dom (cathdreal) is as good a destination to tell the driverv as any. On your way back to the station you can walk via the Mirabel Get yourself a good guide book. I like the Green Guide Michelin for Austria; it will also be helpfulk for your visit in Vienna.

Be sure to include an afternoon Kaffee und Kuchen (coffee and cake ) stop. My favorite is the Cafe Glockenspiel, at the backside of the Dom.

Unless you want to do a lot of shopping, Sunday is a good place to visit S. If you get into S. early enough for the high mass (Hochamt) in the Dom, you are very likely to get a free %26quot;concert%26quot;, most likely a MOzxart or Haydn mass. Impressive no matter what your religious persuasion. The Amt starts around 10:00AM, I believe. Even if you arrive after the sermon (how goo is your German anyhow?), you will still hear the choral sections of the Credo, Sanctus and AgnusDei
