To the Mountains!

Hello, I%26#39;m visiting Salzburg in December for a few day and would like to take a trip to the a nice typically Austrian Mountain town / village.

Could anyone suggest what would be the best place to visit and how to get there. I%26#39;m not going to be doing any skiing so think pituresque.

Thanks in Advance

There are several possibilities. I will post some links to the websites of nice villages/towns and you can get some impressions before deciding where to go:

Very nice is the Salzkammergut area:

there I would recommend St. Wolfgang or St. Gilgen at lake Wolfgangsee:

or Hallstatt:

You can take the bus to get there, join a guided tour or rent a car, which will give you the most flexibility to see more than one village.

Zell am See:

to get there take the train - http://www.oebb.at/vip8/oebb/en/index.jsp

I would vote for Zell am See. It is a nice,, typical alpine and compact town, with some night life. In addition, there are lifts and a cable car to taje you to the top of nearby mountains. They are fun, even if you are not a skier. On a clear day, the views from the Schmittenhoehe are impressive. My favorite is the Grand Hotel. Expensive, but truly grand, right by the lake with a good view of the Grossglockner.

I too would like to recommend Zell am See, especially if the weather is clear. The village sits on a beautiful lake with stunning scenery. It is easily reached by train from Salzburg. We did a great day trip there by train and it couldn%26#39;t have been simpler. The trains are fast and efficient. It is busy in the winter, though, with the ski season in full swing.

Hallstatt is beautiful but a bit more of a trek to get there and it is best only viewed on a totally clear day.

An option you might want to consider, closer to Salzburg, is Berchtesgaden, just over the border in Bavaria. It%26#39;s a very pretty little town with wonderful mountain views. You can get there by train too or there are often bus tours that go there. You pass through some lovely scenery on the way.

Liz.

Thanks for the advise.

I think Zell am See is winning at the moment it looks nice and I always enjoy a foreign train journey! Travelling to Salzburg on the 20-23 December so not sure if it will be packed with skiiers. Maybe its topo close to Christmas tio Ski by then?

Will have a look at Berchtesgaden now. Again thanks for the quick responses
