Christmas In Salzburg

I am planning a holiday in salzburg over the christmas period. I have found many things to do (christmas markets, tours etc), but I am a bit worried that no restuarants will be open on 25-Dec and 26-Dec. Is this the case?

Also I am thinking of staying at the Hotel-Pension Sallerhof in Groedig. Is this area OK?

Any comments would be greatfully recieved

We also will be in Salzburg over Christmas and have been able to book restaurants for both Christmas Eve and Christmas lunch. A lot of them do Festive dinners. If you email the Salzburg Tourist Office

tourist@salzburg.info

and ask them to email you the list of Restaurants that are open for dining at over Christmas. At the time I emailed, this year%26#39;s list was not available, however they sent me last year%26#39;s list, from which I made some choices and emailed different restaurants, and some even emailed their proposed menus, we have now booked the restaurants we wanted.. From what I can gather if you wish something special on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, it would be wise to book.

Hope this helps

Hello, John,

Surfbeach has given you good advice regarding restaurants. I can tell you Grodig is a nice area. It is a little way out of the city, to the south, close to the Untersberg mountain. You will need to get the bus into the city. This should be no problem. We always stay out of the city too (about the same distance as Grodig). We drove through Grodig a couple of weeks ago, it is quite rural with lovely views of surrounding countryside. You could take the cable car to the top of the Untersberg (weather permitting) for stunning views.

Salzburg at Christmas will be magical, my only concern would be the operation of busses over the christmas period. Have you thought of hiring a car for a couple of days?

Groeing is a nice area and as others have said there will be lots of places open for meals.

Have a great time

We had dinner at St. Peter%26#39;s Hotel last Christmas Day and enjoyed it very much. I%26#39;m really not sure what other restaurants were open that day, but on the 26th, even though a lot were closed, there were quite a few open, included our favorite one - Zum Mohren on Judengasse, just up from the Getreidegasse. Wonderful food and good service in a very historic downstairs building.

Hi John,

Stiftskeller St. Peters Restaurant is open for Christmas lunch, but not Christmas eve, though there are quite a few others open on Christmas Eve.

St. Peter%26#39;s website is www.haslauer.at

Email is verkauf@haslauer.at

Hope that helps.

Hello, John

I emailed Stadtbus to find out if buses are running over the Christmas period. I am told that they do run at that time except that on 24th December they cease operating at 8.00pm (Christmas Eve is the important holiday for Austrians rather than 25th), so a taxi would be needed to return home if you were in the city after that time. On 25th and 26th a %26quot;Sunday%26quot; service will run. In our experience this means they arrive every twenty minutes instead of ten minutes, but routes may differ.

We stayed at the Sallerhof for 3 days last month and were very happy with everything about it.

Hole heartedly recommend it to anyone.
