Next Sunday my daugther, 6 yrs, my mom, my aunt and myself will go to Vienna for a girls%26#39; getaway. My mom and aunt would like to visit one of the famous Austrian coffee houses. Any recommandations?

Everyone in Vienna has their own favorite place., often close to where they live or work.
Very hard to give advice .
Best known to tourists is probably Demels on Kohlmarkt- often overrun with tourists and not the best place in my opinion- overpriced for what you get.

Cafe Central
on Herrengasse near to the Hofburg Palace-

Oberlaa - on Neuer Markt and other places too-
many think the best pastry in Vienna thus a favorite here- usually fast service- limited meals too.
Landtmann- on the Ringstrasse

Diglas on Wollzeile also a smaller place on Fleishmarkt

Vertical gives you good recommendations for the type of place you seek. My only other rec would be that you go EARLY before the hordes of tourists descend on them. Diglas on Wolllzeille is probably the exception, I have found you can go there without the crowds on most occasions. If you want to enjoy Cafe Central make sure to go before 9 am if you want a pleasant un-crowded experience. Demel not one that I would go to again. Sperl yes for what you seek. You can also try Cafe Schottenring.

Hasn%26#39;t Oberlaa taken over Dommayer? I like Oberlaa in its place but I think it%26#39;s a shame that Dommayer gets absorbed into the chain ... I went there one Saturday afternoon in winter, for the little concert, and it was charming.
They have an incredibly dorky new waitress in the Diglas in Fleischmarkt - I watched her get three people%26#39;s orders wrong (including mine) and then argue the toss with the customers. I%26#39;ll be sticking to the Wollzeile branch in future. Their set menus are fab.
Tirolerhof near the Albertina is nice too. And Frauenhuber has good hot meals and delicious hot chocolate (on the Himmelpfortgasse, just off the Kaerntnerstrasse).

Roley is correct. Dommayer is now part of the growing Oberlaa empire.
I have not been there recently. The last time it seemed same as usual.
Oberlaa still has some of best offerings in Vienna in my opinion. The
marmorguglhof is excelent.
This consolidation is a trend.
Demels has been owned by Do and Co.for some time.
If Cafe Central gets full- they have a little place just across the street- a very small sign but very nice and quiet . Most tourists never realize this place exists.

and if you are walking and pass my Aidia offers very good coffee and cakes and strudel: try their Maronispitz and the Topfenstrudel

I used to like Cafe Hawelka in Dorotheergasse, but does anyone else agree that it has lost some atmosphere in recent years, possibly since Frau Hawelka died? Is Leopold still active?
Although Demel is overpriced and full of tourists, watching the chefs at work can be quite interesting.
And the Kleines Cafe on Franziskanerplatz is very agreeable.

What about Cafe Imperial? Do they have piano music?

Cafe Imperial only has music weekends - I think about 15:00- 19:00 ( 3 PM - 7 PM. ) an expensive place.

Cafe Hawelka - I agree that it has lost much since the recent changes- perhaps it is just the look with awning and tables outside - and some other things- but the loss of the old couple there daily to watch over everything has signaled the end of a great era!
I have not been there recently - I try to remember it as it was.

Note that there are cafés more for reading the newspaper, smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee, while others are more for those who want to seriously indulge in sweets . Many however will cater for both types of visitors.
Oberlaa, Demel and Heiner are particularly good for sweets and Landtmann and Mozart have a good cake-selection too.
Café Hawelka on the other side would not be the place to go for the cakes and certainly not a place to go if you mind smoke.
