Are they welcome? We%26#39;ve three (well behaved- I know, we all think that about our own little dears ) small children aged 6 to 10, and wanted to give them a little slice of Viennese experience, without over formality.
Our stay is only for a night on our way from Prague to Venice, so anything else that will help define a short stay in Vienna for small children would greatly be appreciated, along with an hotel with family rooms!

Note that not all coffee houses or Cafés are the same. Some are spezializing more in the sweets (Café-Konditorei) and some are more for those people sitting there all day long reading the newspaper, drinking coffee and smoking. The first kind of Cafés might be more interesting for your children. Café Landtmann, for example, is a good mixture of both kinds, and has a non-smoking room too.

Ferdia, so strange to see you in a forum not devoted to the Emerald Isle!
My then three year-old daughter loved the cafes we visited: Cafe Central for the pianist playing the grand piano and Cafe Demel for its glass window to view the inner workings of the bakery. (The same daughter who wants to move to Dingle to live with Fungi.)
We had a room for four at the centrally-located Pension Pertschy. Perhaps they could put in a cot, there%26#39;s certainly enough space. I would not recommend the place in the summer, however, but in the winter it should be fine.

nemorina79. Thanks for that great advice, know nothing about cafe culture in Vienna, and this information is very useful in helping us to distinguish between two cafe types that you have mentioned.

We%26#39;re going next August, and taking in central Europe at an alarming rate - kind of itinerary that my fellow posters on Ireland forum would shout %26quot;noooooooo....%26quot; - but we%26#39;re taking in a few long relaxing stays at he end.
Its just a broadstroke trip to get a sense of travel by rail.
My wife had mentioned cafe Central as an option, so that answers the question. Vienna in the winter must have been a fantastic experience - bet you got some terrific photographs.
Is there anything specific that we should not miss (probably loads) that comes to mind ?

August? Then get a hotel with AC and skip the Pertschy. Worst night of sleep was at the Pension Pertschy, when our room was oppressively hot and opening the windows meant hearing the horses clomping on the cobblestones below.
If you%26#39;re traveling by rail and want a true train travel highlight, you may want to rethink your itinerary to take a train/boat trip from Vienna through the Wachau region of the Danube. It%26#39;s an easy daytrip which the Austrian Rail puts together as a combi package (also with bike rental).

Norman, you%26#39;ve got a point there. Guess I lost my sense of romance as I started to pass our from heat. I am wrong to blame the clomp clomping of the horses when the real problem was the lack of cool air or even a decent breeze in our pension room.

JoJoko. Thanks for that - although Vienna has been on our wish list for years, unfortunately this time it%26#39;s to break up journey from Prague to Vienna, so time is very limited.
Norman - will wait for the romantic horse clomping on cobble trip for another time - windows opened = %26#39;daddy, can you get the fly out of the room%26#39;, which is hard to do when suffering from heat exhaustion :-)
If anyone know%26#39;s of something suitable, with AC and family rooms, would be very grateful.
