beer in austria?

i was in soll two years ago staying at the hotel tenne. they served a beer there which was difficult to find in the other bars. it seemed like all the bars had generally one austrian beer, but more often than not it was the one i preferred. i%26#39;m heading to mayrhofen in feb and would love to know the name of the beer and if i can get it there. this was the most amazing beer and went down really well after skiing all day. if anyone else has tried it i%26#39;m sure they would remember but like i say it was pretty rare. i believe only two bars in soll had it. any help would be great.

thanks mike

If you do not find your favorite beer - this can be a hard thing as many local breweries only supply limited areas- try the beer brewed in the Zillertal - the valley where Mayrhofen is located.

This is Zillertaler Bier - brewed in the small town of Zell am Ziller - just a few kilometers from Mayrhofen. They brew there since the early 1500s- so they must do something right .

Their production is mostly consumed in this valley- try their lager or Pils or dark beer too.

A good reason to visit this area.

I rang Hotel Tenne in Söll for you: The beer is %26quot;STIEGL%26quot;, a midsize brewing-company in the town of Salzburg, very popular beer in the middle and west of Austria, but also booming in Vienna now, a very good pint, I like it a lot myself !

Their regular lager is called %26quot;Goldbräu%26quot;, then there is a sweeter, unfiltered %26quot;Zwickl%26quot;, a very nice %26quot;Pils%26quot;, very dry in taste though, then there is %26quot;Weizengold%26quot;, a Weizenbeer like Erdinger, they also have a quite strong %26quot;Bock%26quot; - beer with 7% alcohol´, and these are just the draught ones, there is even more in bottles. If you are coming to Salzburg, the brewery is open to visitors.

thank you fritz, that%26#39;s just great. i can almost taste that first pint after the slopes. if it%26#39;s widely available in mayrhofen then it should be good times ahead! thanks for doing all that for us, it%26#39;s much appreciated. i%26#39;m not sure what to do now the mystery is solved???

how much can we expect to pay for a pint of beer in mayrhofen? i know you%26#39;ll have the answer!!

|||

A pint of the local lager should be somewhere between 2,90 and 3,40, Weizenbeer or Imports a little bit above that.

What to do now that the mystery is solved ? If Stiegl is your favorite, why not try to find your second best ? I mean trying every new brand you find, you can always start with a small one first, just to keep the loss smaller if you really hate it. Basicly as long as its draught, there are no really ugly beers in Austria, only if you buy cans in the supermarket, you have to be carefull, there are a few really shite no-name types,just never buy the cheapest or second cheapest you get, or stick to the list provided above in the first posting !
