Good morning to all,
I am trying to figure out how to visit this area of Austria, and I hope that some of you are able to help.
My husband and I will arrive in Vienna on Dec. 26 and be leaving on an early afernoon flight on Dec. 29.
We would love to visit this area outside of Vienna; however, it appears that all of the tours for this region during the winter season ae offered on Wed. and Sat. only - the days we arrive and depart.
Does anyone know how we could visit as much of this area as possible? I understand how to go to Melk and the abbey on our own, but we would like to experience more.
I would appreciate any assistance you can provide.
Thank you,
Miriam

Have you ever thought of renting a car and going there on your own? It would be easy and you would be more flexible.
Vienna-Melk would take you 1 hour by car:

You could visit the whole Wachau area, Krems, Melk, .... - the Abbey of Melk, Göttweig Abbey or the villages of Duernstein, Spitz, ..
Maybe get some impressions:

If you are interested in wines you may visit the %26quot;Loisium%26quot; in Langenlois:

Thank you, Ulrike73.
No, I had not thought of renting a car. This is a trip to Gemany, Austira, and Paris. I had thought my husband and I would function better without this element.
However, this sounds like a good solution. I am definitely going to search the sights you so kinldy provided and get more information.
By the way, since I have conducted no research into rental cars, do you have any suggestions for the best company, etc. for renting a car for one day?
Thanks again!
Miriam

I personally always rent cars at Hertz - but they might be more expensive than others...
Just check the websites of the international car rental companies to compare the prices - Hertz, Avis, ...
It may also depend on the location of your hotel in Vienna - if you could tell me that, I could recommend the closest car rental office.

Thank you.
We are staying at the Hotel Austria.
I appreciate your assistance.
Have a great week-end!

Is it the Hotel Austria on %26quot;Am Fleischmarkt 20%26quot;?
It is a perfect location!
The nearest rental offices:
Hertz - Kaerntner Ring 17, 1st district,
you would only have to take the 2Ring%26quot; tram at Schwedenplatz to Schwarzenbergplatz (maybe 15 minutes away)
Opening hours: (Seasonal Location) Apr-Oct: Mo-Fr 0730-1830, Sa-Su 0800-1600 // Nov-Mar: Mo-Fr 0730-1800, Sa-Su 0900-1500.
The Hertz station would be the most convenient for you concerning location - you could also try to call their int. reservation hotline and you will get reductions when you have f.e. Frequent traveller cards.
Avis obvously only has an office at the airport and at Laaer berg which are both further away.
Sixt:
Wien City (Südbahnhof - railway station))
Wiedner Guertel 1A Suedbhf
1040 Wien
Wien Westbahnhof (railway station)
Felberstr.
1150 Wien
Westbahnhof would be better as you could go there by subway from Stephansplatz

By the way - i think an excursion to the Danube valley is only worth it, if the weather is nice, because especially at that time of the year it might be really cold, raining or even snowing.....and as you will only stay in Vienna for 3 nights (which is rather short for even exploring the city) you might want to stay in the city. So maybe you should decide on the trip, when you arrive and know about the forecast...

With so much to see in Vienna and such little time for a visit , I would recommend that you stay in Vienna during your visit. A trip to Melk and /or Krems involves one day of your time.
The Wachau is one onf my favorite places , but this is not the best time to visit.
Many things will be closed during this holiday period. in this area. Weather can be a concern. Vineyards and orchards dormant.
But perhaps an important thing overlooked is the fact of short hours of daylight. .
It will be completly dark by 16:30 ( 4:30 PM ) growing dark for some time before . limiting your enjoyment of this nice area.
If you really want to see some of the Danube and the Wachau.
You can take a train from the Franz Josef Bahnhof to Krems - trip takes about one hour .
From Krems , a regional train has a complimentary schedule with the Vienna train to allow a nice ride along the Danube past t nice towns such as Loiben, Dürnstein, Weissenkirchen Joching and Spitz. Through many vineyards with great views weather permitting.
All towns offer nice churches , old houses , nice small stoned streets.
visit a town then reboard the train as you wish.

My wife and I just returned from a visit to Austria. We drove from the Airport in Munich to Bad Reichenhall, Germany and spent two days in the Hotel Dora. Great hotel, terrific owners and well located. From there you can go to Berchesgaden, Salzwerks Salt mine (by car) and other places including Salzburg.
We then drove to Melk and stayed two nights in the Hotel Wachau. We liked the hotel (pension) and enjoyed the room and the great breakfast. It also has free parking and internet. We had booked reservations on the cruise from Melk to Krems and return. It took about 5 hours and was worth the trouble. If you are short of time, you can drive the scenic route from Melk to Krems, but then you miss the fun of the boat and the food. The Abbey in Melk is outstanding and well worth the trip.
The trip from Melk to Vienna is short if you have a car.
I am not sure that this is helpful, but let me know if you need more information.

Thank you for all of your assistance.
I appreciate the reminders about the weather, the hours of daylight and nightfall, and the information regarding rental cars and Vienna articles.
Do you think trying to go to Neustfit Am Walde for an afternoon / evening dinner is feasible?
You%26#39;re right; it is easy to get %26quot;turned around%26quot; in the dark, and we don%26#39;t need that!
Again, I appreciate your interest in my trip and your most helpful responses.

Neustift am Walde not only a very feasible short trip but one I would recommend.
This was a former small wine village that the growing city of Vienna came to meet.
The trip is easy by taxi - about 15 mnutes perhaps 15 euro depending where you begin the journey or very easy by public transport - Go to Schottentor on the Ringstrasse- easily reached by walking , streetcars 1, 2 or D Bus 1 A , U-Bahn U-2
This is a major transfer point for city transport - go to the lower level of this station - take streetcar #38 from there to Gatterburggasse- wait for the Bus 35 A that takes you directly to Neustift. Fun to have a look at this part of the city on the way- a favorite residential area for many .
Immediately in front of the bus stop - Neustift - numerous heurigers
Fuhrgassl- Huber, Hauerkuchl, Schreiberhaus , Wolff and others .
Good food and wine at these places - atmosphere is similar - have a look inside and decide which one is for you- no need to reserve-
for info
www.fuhrgassl-huber.at
for fuhrgassl- huber and Hauerkuchl-
Mom and Dad have F -H , one daughter has Hauerkuchl , another daughter has the guesthaus down the street , still another has a heuriger in another part of town.
check website for hours-
Sunday afternoons and Holidays very busy. usually not too busy weekdays early evenings.
F / H mostly buffet-
Hauerkuchl has a buffet and menu.
nearby the Schreiberhaus
www. dassschreiberhaus.at
I find the food and wine to be very good at all places
Wolff just down the street , has an evening heuriger show.
Still this area is not full of tourists as you would find in Grinzing- and seems much more tranqil and enjoyable- no need to rush this visit - many sit for hours - at Holiday time some family parties etc.no will will present a bill - you must ask for it.
In summer , all places have very nice gardens for outdoor dining .
This is a nice area to make a short walk into the vineyards located just behind these places. -several paved walkways too-
The little Church nearby is worth a visit too.
To return home - bus stop just across the street from Hauerkuchl- a taxi stand is there also. This makes a very nice evening.
Often in the winter you will find it snowing here while the center of Vienna has rain. Neustift has a higher altitude which makes it colder.
But this helps in summer where it is a few degrees cooler .
