We are travelling to Vienna from Australia with another family for Christmas. We will be staying at the Apartments Riemergasse. We understand that Christmas Eve is the traditional Christmas celebrations. We also understand that many restaurants are closed on this evening. Can anyone recommend a restaurant for 2 families (8 peolpe) on Christmas Eve ?? Youngest children are 13 so while they are young adults we would prefer something that is not too formal and stuffy. Somewhere with lots of atmosphere would be ideal. As we have no knowledge of Vienna and have been advised to book any advice would be of great assistance. Thank you

Just across the street from your apartment is Restaurant Pürstner- casual , not formal good atmosphere and OK food

I believe they are open Christmas Eve but check to be certain - best to make reservation
Also check Livingstone - still in the First district but a nice walk - good to see the lights and windows of the city.

Thank you for your advice - Your first suggested restaurant looked excellent however I contacted them and they are closed on both 23rd and 24th Dec. The second restuarant I could not read the website as it did not have an English option.
If you had any further suggestions it would be most appreciated.
Thank you

Maybe you could try the %26quot;Oesterreicher im MAK%26quot; - located in a former museum, a very special location with excellent food:

or another option:
- Steirerstoeckl
a really nice traditional restaurant with very good regional food, which is in a more residential part of Vienna (it is bit outside of the city center, but in my opinion worth going there). It is located right within a big park, very nice:

The Homepage is only in German (it is where many locals eat).
The address:
Pƶtzleinsdorferstr. 127, A 1180 WIEN
01 - 440 49 43
You might better take a taxi for going there as it is a bit further from the city center in an upscale residential area.

Hi, is Steirerstoeckl opened on Christmas Eve?

I can understand your desire to get out with the two families, but you might have a time of it on Christmas Eve. It%26#39;s a very stay-at-home holiday, and you might think of organizing something yourself at home. I lived in Austria (Vienna) and Switzerland for years, and I learned by experience that it%26#39;s unwise to expect much of anything to be open on or around Christmas.
That said, another solution might be a hotel dining room in the first district. They%26#39;re the ones that really have trouble closing. Good luck,
Tom
