Vienna to Venice

My husband and I have booked a hotel for a few nights in Venice in December. Now we just need to figure out the best way to get there from Vienna. Any suggestions?

We did the trip last year in October. Ended up taking the train which was most comfortable - as a bonus, the route (esp the first half) was extremely scenic!

We were lucky to get discount fares (only 29 Euro each!) one way but paid regular fare (around 65 Euro) on the way back. I was considering driving it, but most rental car companies ask for a lot of extra money (plus compulsory CDW) if you take the car into Italy.

Hope this helps - enjoy your trip!

For information on trains go to the Austrian Rail website

www.oebb.at

also insert - %26quot;vienna to venice %26quot;in the search box- many discussions on this subject.

You could also book flights from Vienna to Venice - just look here:

http://www.aua.com/at/eng/default.htm

The ticket for the flight Vienna-Venice-Vienna would cost 169 Euros/person.

Just to add the difference in travel time:

Vienna-Venice...

...by flight: 1:30 hours

...by train: 8:23 hours (fastest connection)

I think if you can afford it, it is worth to pay a bit more for a flight as you will be rewarded by so many extra hours for staying in Venice itself - 16 hours in the train is not very convenient and a waste of time.

The fastest train connection is 7:00 hours... from city center to city center. If you have enough time and like to see scenic landscape, then take the train.

Austrian Airlines are okay... but sometimes their cheap %26quot;red ticket%26quot; offers become more expensive in the last step of online-booking (happened to me and very angry about this).

Rail fares:

2nd class, oneway: € 29 (offer) or € 70

1st class oneway: € 105

Thank you all so much for your input.

When you consider the time to airport- early check-in time - then security check - then a wait for boarding - then landing waiting for luggage - then transfer airport to Hotel- probably 80- 90 euro by water taxi or the bus to vaporetto - then hotel.

The train is not really much longer- not bad scenery for much of the trip as mentioned above and you see it at ground level not at 10000 meters.

The train will usually get you there reasonably on time regardless of weather - no luggage or carry-on restrictions on the train- train is rarely canceled.

You can relax on the train in a large seat- walk around- have a meal served on a table with numerous choices or even sleep.

I travel on AUA often and try to remain loyal , but the Austrian Air ( Tyrolean - VO )flights to Venice are generally Bombardier Dash 8 aircraft - very small prop planes with limited carry on storage and cramped conditions . I do not like to fly on this type plane

These are the same type aircraft that recently suffered numerous accidents and crashes with the airline SAS.

It was so much of a problem that SAS has now withdrawn all Dash 8 planes from their fleet and will no longer have passenger flights using this aircraft.

In my opinion, the train is the better way to Venice.
