What is the best area for a summer holiday?

Hello,

My boyfriend %26amp; I have been looking into a holiday to Austria next August. We would like to go for 2 weeks but are unsure on the best area to stay. We don%26#39;t mind doing a two centred holiday, maybe half in the contry side and half in a city?

We would quite like to spend time walking, %26amp; would like to be near a lake, what is bregenz like? Could we easily travel from bregenz to vienna by train?

Any suggestions would be very much appreicated!

In my opinion the most scenic and beautiful areas to stay in Austria in Summer - combination of lakes and mountains - are the Salzkammergut area close to Salzburg and Carinthia. I will post some links so that you can get an overview:

Salzkammergut and Salzburg:

Vienna:

Also very nice is the Styrian wine country:

There you also find the home of the famous Lipizzan horses:

and the Styrian part of the Salzkammergut - the Ausseerland:

Would you like to stay in 2 areas or do you prefer a round trip?

My personal recommendation is the %26quot;Weissensee%26quot; lake, where we spent our family holidays for years, Ulrike already posted the link, its a wonderfull lake, at about 1000m height, surrounded by mountains, you can go hiking or mountainbiking or whatever in the morning, and then go swimming or sailing on the afternoon, when it gets hotter.

99% of the accomodations have their own little private beach, mostly right next to the house, so no extra hassle or costs for going to the public bath or %26quot;strandbad%26quot;, there are plenty of different forms of accomodation for all budgets. The whole scenery looks very much like a fjord in Norway or something like that.

We always stayed at Seehotel Enzian, which was very nice, bcasue they rented sailboats, which was important for me and my dad, but I haven´t been there for at least 6-7 years, so pls. don´t rely on that. There is one review of it on trip-advisor, but that must be a mistake, neither the description in the text nor the pictures could be the hotel I am talking about. Here is their link, it still looks very nice:

Thankyou very much for the info, the Weissensee Lake area looks just what we would be looking 4. What airport is closest to this area? Can anybody else recommend any good hotels or B%26amp;B%26#39;s? Are there many restuarants in that area?

If we wanted to do 7days here %26amp;then go on to Vienna do you know if there are trains that go there %26amp; if so how long would it take?

Thanks

The closest airport will be in Klagenfurt.

I would highly recommend renting a car for exploring the area during your stay!

I cannot comment on accomodation directly at the lake Weissensee, but I know a really nice hotel about 45km away in the beautiful Gail valley:

Biohotel Daberer

Going to Vienna is no problem, it will take you about 4-5 hours:

I have just spoken to my pareents, who continued going there, and they also recommend the B %26amp; B´s %26quot;Haus Alpenblick%26quot; and %26quot;Haus Binter%26quot;, both are in neusach, the more qiet end of the lake, but by bike you are in Techendorf, which is the main village, in about 5-10 min. or approx. 20 - 30 min. walking along the lake. Both B %26amp; B´s have nice private beach grounds with good comfortable acess into the water.

Generall speaking, Techendorf is the busiest place, if there is any form of busy up there, Oberndorf and Gatschach are village a little bit above the lake, where you would have to walk to the beach down the hill, and Neusach is the more quiet place, where nearly all houses are at the lake directly !

There are many restaurants in the area, most of them beeing nice and cozy traditional inns, but there are also Gourmet places like restaurant %26quot;Ronacherfels%26quot;.

The nearest trainstation is %26quot;Greifenburg%26quot;, in the valley below the lahe, about 20- 30 min. drive by taxi on a nice mountain road, to get from there to Vienna you would have to exchange once in Villach, total trav. time would be around 6 hours.

The nearest, small but still international, airport is Klagenfurt, about 1,5 hours by car away, I would recommend flying there and taking a rental car from there, you can do a lot of little trips from the Weissensee, and then take the car to drive back to Vienna and return it there, and fly back from there.

Arrival information for Weissensee:

www.weissensee.com/en/anreise/anreise.html

One general warning: The waterlevel of the lake is at about 1000 metres above the sea, which means that even if it has 30° during the day, nightime temperatures can go down as far as 10° - 15° , and the lake will not be any warmer than 18° - 21° even in the summer, which some people might find quite %26quot;refreshing%26quot;. The good side of this: The lake is also great for fishing, and the cool temperatures ensure a great sleep during the night !

There are wonderfull pictures of the lake at www.fotocommunity.de , just put %26quot;Weissensee%26quot; into the search field on the top !

Ooops, doubleposting ....

I think there are direct flights from the UK to Klagenfurt by Ryan Air!

My personal choices would either be the lake district as you do have the lakes and mountains to explore, and my favourite is St Gilgen.

Also I would suggest Seefeld. Its close to Innsbruck (Half hour transfer time) and you have the added bonuses of being on a train journey where you can take a wonderful trip to Innsbruck, but you are also very close to Germany where you can take a train to Mittenwald or Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Thanks for all your helpful comments. I%26#39;ve been looking into a bit more %26amp; think our plan is to is either stay in the Carinthia area. Could fly into Klagenfurt %26amp; hire a car from airport. Would like to stay near lakes and mountains for 10 days %26amp;then maybe drive to either Vienna or Salzberg and stay there for 4-5nights %26amp;then fly back from either of their airports.

Does this sound like a reasonable trip or would anyone suggest differently?

I%26#39;m still looking for accommodation, has anyone any suggestions? Nothing to expensive but close to lakes and in walking distance for restaurants etc. If we went for breakfast only are there restaurants nearby to eat in at night?

My recommendation for a 2 weeks itinery would be

1. Fly into Klagenfurt, rent a car and stay at the Lake Woerthersee, which is in my opinion the most beautiful lake - I would opt for Velden or Poertschach which are the nice villages at the lakeside and offer most options concerning restaurants. From this area you can make many day trips for hiking. it offers a very good combination of relaxing at the lake and exploring the beautiful areas around:

http://en.woerthersee.com/

www.carinthia-info.at/…

www.carinthia-info.at/…

www.carinthia-info.at/…

2. - 7. lake Woerthersee

8. drive to the Salzkammergut area and stay at lake Wolfgangsee.

9. Salzkammergut area - go to Salzburg in the evening

tiscover.at/at/…home.html

salzkammergut.at/alias/…wanderwelt

10. Salzburg

11.Salzburg

http://www2.salzburg.info/

12. either drive to Vienna and visit the Wachau area in your way or take the train which will easily take you to Vienna

13.Vienna

14. Vienna (fly home from Vienna)

You could also shorten your stay in Carinthia and add it to your stay in the beautiful Salzkammergut area!
