Hi! We%26#39;ll be arriving in Salzburg and Vienna (also going to Frankfurt Airport, Wurzburg, Rothenburg, Schwangau). Wondering whether the ATMs have the PLUS sign logo and how easy it is to search for ATMs. Which city%26#39;s ATM is the best bet for good rates? Thanks!

I am a bit confused by your question, but I think all ATM´s basicly have the same functions over here, they probaly look slightly different, but thats just technical stuff, at least I think so ...
And for the rates: The bankomats normally belong to a recognised bank over here, so you get the rate the bank would give you, in generally I THINK its one of the cheapest ways of getting cash ...
This comapny organises all bankomats, electronic payment ... in Austria, they are now called pay-Life, they used to be Euro-Pay:

I do not think the above mentioned website will provide what you need.
Visa Plus logos will be found on most ATM machines everywhere in your journey.
Especially in city center areas you will find these machines everywhere. including the Franffurt airport.
Fortunately , you will only need euro for the places you mentioned.
The ATM are recognized to provide probably the best possible exchange rate from your home currency into euro. The rate will vary regularly as the currencies fluctuate. But is is normally always better than trying to exchange currency into euro as many banks no longer provide this service.
You will see free - standing currency exchange centers but they provide very poor rates of exchange.
Travelers Checks are about worthless to purchase as few places will accept them.
look to this website - it will provide locations of Visa/ Plus ATM machines in the places you visit.
http://visa.via.infonow.net/locator/global/
example -
enter Austria - Vienna- postal code 1010 for Vienna city center - you will find many locations. - many with 24 hour service. Most all will have very similar rates of exchange.
you can use this for other places too and print out a list if you wish , but with so much availability you will not need to look very far- most banks will have them- some inside others just outside.
Be certain to check with your Bank before leaving on your trip - you will want to confirm the maximaum withdrawal available daily and if it is small perhaps wish to increase it.

My experience as a regular visitor to Vienna is that you get the best rate of exchange for cash from the ATMs. Your credit/debit card provider will charge you a fee for this whichever machine you use. What can vary is the fee charged by the provider of the ATM - from nothing to quite exhorbitant amounts. You should be shown this BEFORE you finalise the transaction and I have, before today, cancelled my withdrawal and gone to another, cheaper ATM.
As the fees are often fixed and as you will be able to use euros in both Austria and Germany it pays to get out the maximum you can each time.

you might try one other ploy and avoid the %26quot;fee%26quot; your bank charges for giving you your own money:
load up your card with %26quot;extra%26quot; prior to your trip, then make a cash withdrawal from the credit card. presto, no fee!
note -- cash withdrawal, not a %26quot;cash advance%26quot;.
and since you have a credit balance on your card, no interest either.
some cards limit the amount of %26quot;pre-load%26#39;, but if you use on-line banking, you can top up as you go. then only exchange rates should apply. check your card agreement for %26#39;fine print%26#39;

Thanks, everyone. :) Very useful info indeed. I do think that withdrawing from an international ATM card gives the best rate. As for the credit card, I had pre-loaded it with extra cash, however, I am of the opinion that credit cards in general charge you the highest exchange rate. Am I right?
Given a choice, would you pay by credit card for your hotel bill or just pay cash withdrawn from the ATM?
ARIGATO! thanks.

By creditcard!

agree, credit card!
they will give you the best exchange at all times.
