My wife and I are going to Innsbruck at the end of January of 2008 for 10 days. We have 5-day super ski pass and breakfast %26amp; dinner included in hotel Innsbruck.
My wife is a good beginner so I wonder what is the best slope in the area that is good for beginners but also for intermediate/advance skiers? I understand transportation to the slopes is free and it is from the hotels...
How is apres-ski at the city...best places/bars to go?
For the rest of the stay in Innsbruck we are planning for site seeings in the city Innsbruck and day trip train visits to Munich and Salzburg. I try to look for train info and places to visit in Salzburg and Munich (station location in the city, departure-arrival times, costs, places to visit etc)..any info on this would be great. Any other interesting places to visit whether in the city or in the area requiring a day trip (preferably with train).
thanks.

First of all the beautiful town of Innsbruck is the capital of the Tyrol and not a typical skiing resort. Only very view people who come to the Tyrol for skiing, stay directly in the city of Innsbruck. Most of the people go to the popular skiing resorts like the Arlbergs area (Lech, St.Anton, Zürs), Ischgl, Soelden, Seefeld, Kitzbuehel, Mayrhofen, ...etc. - so do not expect typical apres-ski atmosphere of a skiing resort in the city of Innsbruck.
But as I said Innsbruck is a nice city with many interesting sights and an awesome location within very high mountains. For skiing you will have to take the bus to reach the different areas near Innsbruck.
I will try to post some links which will give you a nice overview and more info:

My favorite hotel is the Penz hotel and its bar the 5th floor:

I also like the cafe/bar/lounge called %26quot;360 Grad%26quot;:

Innsbruck is indeed a very nice city and you will enjoy it. I was there in March this year and used it as a base to go to the various ski places. Staying at the Kranebitterhof. These ski-places would take on average of 1 hour by car to get to. Here is were I went:
1. STUBAIER GLETSCHER, (glacier) Stubai-Valley, snow guaranteed with slopes for all levels.
2. SCHLICK 2000, Stubai-Valley, small, friendly slopes, really 2 runs but worthwhile nevertheless. North side !
3. AXAMER LIZUM, breath-taking views, the olympia run is quiet challenging at high speed, another run to the sunny-side very pleasant with a nice restaurant/terrasse in the middle of the slope. You will like the t cable train to go to the top.
4. KUHTAI resort, is on a through-road at 2%26#39;000 meters (6%26#39;000 ft) altitude, with many gentle slopes on both sides, very picturesque and you can follow the sun.
Depending on weather/snow conditions you may extend your skiing for another day or two! The SWAROSKY shop is certainly worth a visit, been there, and if you are looking for a nice meal-out away from the town or touristy places you might go to the Kranebitterhof in Kranebitten, which has a typical Tyrollean restaurant with old wood paneling and a nice cellar bar . The food is good at moderate prices. Very popular with local people.
I have just posted loaded some pictures and videos on my site. Go and have a look and give me your comments. Enjoy.

I wonder if we need a rent-a-car while staying there.
How%26#39;s the public transportation within the city and also for surrounding areas (say 1h-3h drive from the city)...basically what is the best option; train/car/bus?
|||
I always drive when going skiing to Austria or Switzerland, it gives me more freedom. I am also more comfortable this way, no need to schlepp the ski-gear around., no need to check on timetables, wait for buses/train. Of course I would leave the car when there is a parking near the resort and hop on the ski-shuttle. I have driven in the most adverse winter conditions and never felt unsafe, never got stuck, by taking precautions . Have not been using train/buses on my ski-trips. Make your calculations, 2 times return tickets versus car renal price and time saving.

Ops, you are from Toronto ! please delete the sentence were I lecture about driving in winter. Sorry.
|||
:) :) It%26#39;s good to know. Thanks for advice. Winter there can probably be as harsh as here in Toronto/Ontario, but land surface hence the roads are different.
p.s.
just got my winter tires...it%26#39;s a must.
