Going to Andorra, Arinsal, for our first ever skiing holiday. All 6 of us -us + 3 teenagers and 1 9 yrs. old. Looking for any info on gear we should buy. Ski jackets and trousers I presume for all? Any suggestions as Ski gear i have looked at is v. expensive - is it necessary to have SKI jackets or would any casual style do. Should I invest in goggles %26amp; sunglass for all also ? Do we require apres ski boots - what would you recommend as good footwear for evening time? I assume we will be in ski boots and gear during the day. Are resorts casual ? Any tips on any aspect of skiing hol would be appreciated. Read some where about lockers at Gondola ? Is this a good idea ? Please help.
Thanks.

Hi Owensby,
If its your first holiday and don%26#39;t want to invest in ski clothes that you may not wear ever again (or that kids will grow out of) you could hire your jacket and sallopettes from The Great Outdoors, Chatham St in Dublin. I think it costs about €50 for the week.
Alternatively, there are inexpensive options for purchasing the gear. Try TK Max in Stephen%26#39;s Green shopping centre, Lidl occasionally and I think Dunnes Stores have some too. If you%26#39;re looking for big brands at a discount you could wait until Arnotts have their January sale..
Good Luck

Four things you should not try to save on, especially when you are a beginner or with kids:
- good ski glasses: Snow googles and a good pair of sunglasses. Snowgoogles becuase you wouldn´t believe how quickly a bit snow and wind can turn into a snowstorm that can completely blind your sight - no sight means you are getting more nevrvous, beeing more nervous will make you feel unasfe and feeling unsafe will kill your fun skiing ...
- good gloves and good ski-socks, especially for the kids: Nothing cools down faster then your fingers and your toes, especially with the tight ski-boots limiting the circulation into your feet already. And nothing kills the fun for the kids (and therefore for the parents) faster then having cold fingers or toes. Additionally, ski-socks are a question of hygiene especially when you rent ski-boots.
- Ski-helmets, at least for the kids: I have worked as a paramedic in ski-resorts, and I have seen too many head-injuries, so please, spend a few Euros on them. They are now modern, lightweight, they come in funny colours for the kids, kids like them because they are cool ... many ski-schools now require them for the kids classes, and very often you can rent them with the rest of the equipment !
Greetings %26amp; have fun, Fritz

Hey Guys thanks for the tips - great to have some of the questions answered. Great Outdoors sounds good and I hadn%26#39;t ever heard that they rent so thanks a lot. Actually bought goggles in TK maxx today !! Fitz thanks for all the info on the tips and toes n keeping them warm. I was wondering though should I purchase my sons helmets here and bring them with us or will I definitely be able to rent them when we are away.
Thanks again guys.

There is a great post here about cheap skiing. SOunds like an oxymoron but the advice they give is sensible and I can see how it could save tons of money.

get to Tk maxx for jackets and gear. some ski shops do clothing hire. A good water proof hiking type boot is the thing. you will need goggles and sun glasses depending on weather. After hours all resorts are casual. you will probablly love skiing so buying some gear essential.
