First timer to the Opera: some advice

Hi,

My wife and I will be in Vienna for 4 days in December, and are thinking about attending an Opera. We are not very educated musically, and have never been to an Opera before, but are eager to attend one at the State Opera House (which is also close to where we will be staying)

The only date that works is Dec 22 which is a Saturday. There is a performance of %26quot;L%26#39;elisir d%26#39;amore%26quot; at 8 pm. Could you please give me some advice on the following:

1) Should I book advance tickets now, or wait till Nov 22 when the assigned seating opens? Since it is the high=tourist season, I am inclined towards the former, but would love to get some advice

2) Anyone attended this particular Opera?

Thanks very much for your advice. I went through all the Opera threads on TripAdvisor and found them most useful.

This is the link to the Internet reservations, and yes, you should reserve in advance asap, a Saturday night performance so shortly before christmas will sell out very quickly.

I have seen this opera before, but not this certain performance, but the opera is wonderfull, one of the most romantic love-storys ever composed, but also very funny in a way, light stuff but still very good, and its not too long like wagner, its 2:15h playing time with one break in between. There are pictures of the stage and decorations on the opera webpage, it only starts in a few weeks there, but one can already see that its a very traditional stage decoration, costumes ... You will have a very enjoyable evening, and with the new subititle monitors in the seats in front of you, it also has become easier to follow the story !

A nice feature is that if you want to have a light snack during the break, or a glas of Champagne and a sandwich or some of the very nice sweets they have there, you can actually go to the buffet before the show, and preoder it, and they will have it ready for you at the table when the break starts, saves waiting in line, and the buffet-hall is very nicely decorated as well.

A first time for everything ! We all went there once for the first time.

This can make for a very festive evening.- the performance is about 2 hours-

as this is a very busy time I would suggest pre- booking tickets now

A nice opera - the scheduled conductor is Eschwe´ one of my favorites as he always seem to bring out much from the cast. read about the plot before you go and buy a program - it will provide a synopsis in english and makes a nice souvenir.

You must check your coats in the check room after entering-- none are permitted in the performance area

Have a walk around before the Opera or during the pause ( intermission) several buffets to have a drink and also lets you view the house too.

As an alternative - the Volksoper - easyto rech via streetcar 40, 41. from Schottentor on the Ringstrasse.

the Grafin Mariza that evening - also very good evening music -
