salzburg to vienna-- cheapest transportation for 4?

In 2 weeks, I%26#39;ll be traveling with 3 of my friends from Salzburg to Vienna, and we%26#39;re wondering what is the CHEAPEST way of getting there? How much does the train cost? Is there a cheaper (and probably slower) train? Or would we be better off renting a car?

Any advice is much appreciated!!!!!

You can find train schedules at the ÖBB wbsite.

http://www.oebb.at/en/

Cheapest ticket(s) would be the 2nd class 1-PLUS-Freizeitticket. The 1st traveler pays the 2nd class fare + 1 € = 44.40 € and the next 4 travelers pay the 2nd class fare - 50% = 22.20 €. Just ask the agent for four 2nd class tickets and you should automatically get the Friezeittickets.

Travelers under age 26 could by the VORTEILScard %26lt;26 for 19.90 € and then buy all train tickets at a 50% discount.

Thanks so much for your help!

One more question about the student discount pass: can one person buy that (for 19 euros) and then buy all the rest of the 4 tickets for 50% off? Or, would each of us need to purchase our OWN 19 euro pass plus the actual ticket from Salzburg to Vienna?

|||

Each passenger has to buy his own VorteilsCard... cost is € 19,90, valid for one year for train travel in Austria (45-50% off... buy from the ticket machines and not the counter, then you get 50%; 25% off for international journeys). You need a valid passport showing your age and a foto. The real card will be sent to you by post, but you get a paper card for the time you don%26#39;t have your real card which you have to show to the conductor when he comes to check the tickets.

Another possibility could be renting a car...

I have checked the AVIS website, just for an example, and their cheapest rental car oneway between Salzburg and Vienna, return on the same day, would be an Opel Corsa for € 77, but that never takes 4 people plus luggage. A car that might be big enough, an Opel Astra Stationwaggon, would be € 114, but I wouldn´t go for AVIS, their rental stations are both far in the outskirts of the towns.

Avis in Salzburg is on Ferdinand Porsche Strasse, just across the road from the train station (a one minute walk). It is a mere thirty seconds walk from the bus station. We have used Avis many times and would recommend them highly.

OK, sorry about the mistake with AVIS in Salzburg, I only read Ferdinand Porsche Strasse, and I work with a few car dealers in that street, and it stretches out quite a bit, and they are all at the outer end it seems, so when I read the adress, I automatically thought its all out there, again, sorry for the mistake, I should stick to answering Vienna questions ...

In Vienna, their %26quot;city%26quot; return location hasunfortunatly moved out to the 10th district recently, they are now in Laaerbergstrasse, and you would first have to take a bus to the underground and then the underground into the city. Pls. also check on their opening times for returns, e.g. on saturday in Vienna they are only openuntil 2 PM, and I assume its the same or worse on Sundays.

Hi Fritz

Most grateful for your input here on the Salzburg forum. Don%26#39;t desert us :-) It is only that I%26#39;ve used Avis so much that I know their location well. Your advice is always valuable.

Sorry to but in on this but I%26#39;ve got another question about the discount train travel.

We%26#39;ll be traveling from Klagenfurt to Salzburg (10th June) and then Salzburg to Vienna (12th June - Fritz has helped me with the accomodation here!!!)

Anyway, Klagenfurt/Salzburg leg, it will be 5 adults, of which one is under 26.

Salzburg/Vienna leg is will be 6 adults, of which one is under 26.

What ticket type would you suggest for these?? (I know I can%26#39;t buy at the moment but it would be handy to know)

I would wait until the new year with that, the topic of public transport during the Euro 2008 is still in discussion big time, and I am fairly sure there will be some kind of special ticket for the fans, especially if I look at the list of small pimpish events for which tey alsready have these tickets, I´d say check back on this page regularly and you will see:
