Can anyone help with the best way to get from the Vienna airport to the Grand Hotel Wien? We arrive on the afternoon of December 23rd (Sunday). And then from the Hotel to the train station, as we are travelling on to Prague on the 27th.
Also, I know it sounds like a very basic question....but can snow be expected at Christmas time in Vienna?
Thanks in advance.

Best and most convenient way is by a taxi transfer service.
You must reserve in advance. They meet you in Arrivals Hall , assist with luggage and take you to the Hotel door.
Usually less than 30 euro.
other ways to the city exist - but if tired after a long journey or having much luggage - the transfer service is the best way in my opinion.
usually lchance of snow but you never know what happens.

Sorry - not finished before but the computer does not wish to help me today.
for transfer service
www.airportdriver.at
for train - most to Prague leave from Vienna Sudbahnhof -
from the Grand - you can take streetcar%26quot;D %26quot; stopping just across from the Opera House -200 meters from the Grand . about 10 minutes to the stop immediately in front of the station or of course by taxi - a short ride- perhaps 10 euro maximum.

Hi Vertical,
Thank you for your response.
I will take a look at the website you suggest now. You are right about a long journey, by the time we arrive in Vienna, we would have been travelling from Australia for nearly 30 hours (including airport stopovers).
Here%26#39;s hoping to some snow - it would be a bit of a novelty after having around 25-35+ degrees celcius we normally have for christmas days.
Thanks again.
Linda.

I have just used airportdriver again on my own holidays two weeks ago, and I was very happy with them on both routes. Young, very friendly drivers, brand-new cars (Skoda Octavia Stationwaggon or Volkswagen Sharan Minivan), as the company is only in its first year, carried my luggage for me, very nice service: When I went to the airport very early in the morning, the driver e.g. asked me if I wanted the radio turned off and get a last bit off sleep on the way out there, and on the way back (a sunday, so shops are closed in Vienna) his colleague asked me if he should stop at a gas-station so I could buy some stuff to get over the Sunday ...
Don´t be surprised if you order a transfer online, and don´t get a confirmation mail very quickly. If you book outside their office hours, you will only get a confirm when they open the office again, because they seem to be very busy and have to have a look first if they can really pick you up at the time you want.
Another advantage: As htey are taking you for a fixed price, you don´t have to be afraid of beeing ripped of by a taxi-driver, not that I would think they do that commonly.
Greetings, Fritz

Thanks Fritz for your comments.
It%26#39;s always nice to hear favourable comments about a service. I%26#39;ve taken a look at their website and it looks like we will book them, but I thought we may leave it a little closer to the time to make a reservation.
As we do arrive on a Sunday and shops are closed, would you suggest a wander through the Christmas markets that afternoon/evening if I manage to stay awake?
Finally, does Vienna have any outdoor ice skating rinks, and if so, are they open that time of year?
|||
Oh yes, a walk over a christmas market on a sunday afternoon before christmas will set your christmasmood just right, and with a few hot %26quot;Glühweins%26quot; (mulled wine) you will easily skeep through the jetlag later ...
Regarding ice-skating: Yes, there is a wonderfull open air ice-skating ring, the %26quot;Wiener Eislaufverein%26quot;, on Lothringerstrasse 22, between the Intercontinental hotel and the %26quot;Konzerthaus%26quot; concert house building, just a minute walking away from the underground station %26quot;Stadtpark%26quot;.

The location is very nce, because of the neighbouring concert building, and there is music for the skaters as well, sometimes classic, sometimes more modern ....
They are closed on the afternoon of the 24th december, but for the rest of the time, they are open from 9:00 - 20:00 !
Greets, Fritz
