Vienna for Euro 2008 - where's the best location in the city

Hi there, we%26#39;ve already booked most of our trip and are looking for any information you can provide for the following questions; (Thanks in advance!)

We are due to arrive by train from Salzburg on the 12th of June and then depart on 08.05 flight on the 14th.

Can you recommend a suitable location or even better, a hotel, for 6 adults? Happy to consider any type of room, i.e. twin, triple or apartment etc.

I think that as it%26#39;s an early flight, a location with a direct line or simple transfer to the airport would be the main consideration and not too far from the action and in particular, the Fans Area!!!

For budget and comfort, not too fussy but ideally no more than about €350 per night for the 6 of us (don%26#39;t know if that%26#39;s realistic or not!)

Any other suggestions regarding things to see and do, would be most welcome and see you next year!!!

Hey there,

You should probably look at a hotel somewhere in the old town or in the neighbouring 6th, 7th, or 8th district, that would be postcode 1010 for the oldtown or 1060, 1070, 1080 or 1090, thats not too far from the trainstation where you arrive, and its walking distance from the fan-mile on the Ringstrasse - boulevard.

The problem is that most hotels haven´t yet released their prices for the Euro 2008, so you will have to check them individually, but of the ones that are reviewed here on tripadvisor, you might wanna check some of the following:

Hotel Rathaus Wein %26amp; Design

Pension Kraml

Falkensteiner Hotel am Schottenfeld

Hotel Graf Stadion

Hotel Mercure Secession

Hotel Zipser

InterCity Hotel Vienna (not walking distance from fan-mile, but very good public transport)

Arcotel Wimberger (same situation as InterCity)

Hotel Kugel

Austria Trend Hotel Anatol

........

It might also be worth having a look at hostels, beeing a group of 6 youcould get yourself a cheap room, many of them have ensuites now as well, and spend the rest of the money on something else ...

check www.hostelworld.com for that, there still seems to plenty of rooms available, thatsite also gives availabilites in other budget hotels, not just hostels, so definetly worth a check.

To get a flight from Vienna airport at 08:05 AM, you would have to leave the town at around 06:00 Am at the latest, considering you might wanna go for a few drinks the night before, I would seriously recommend a cab to the airport, or a transfer-service like www.airportdriver.at , € 39 for a minibus to the aiport, divided by 6 people, makes about € 6 per head, thats even cheaper then the regular bus, and it goes door to door, quality service, cannot beat that offer .....

That%26#39;s brilliant information - exactly what I was hoping for.... many, many, many thanks!!!

I especially like the info about the transfer to the airport - as you are spot on with the beer the night before!!!

Any good places to visit, where we can meet the people of Vienna and not just %26quot;tourists%26quot;? It%26#39;s not that we won%26#39;t meet people from other nations whilst the football is on but we%26#39;re all of the type, to go a few streets back from the %26quot;bright lights%26quot; and meet the people of the city itself, as you learn so much more this way.

Thanks again, Paul

To be honest, at the moment none of us really have a good clue, whats it gonna be like with the Euro 2008 next year, the town will be fairly full during the weeks.

I would say if you go a bit out of the City Center, you should have a good chance to meet a few locals who are escaping the hectic of the city, for example consider an evening at a %26quot;Heurigen%26quot; tavern, but don´t go to Grinzing for it, thats where everybody will go, but go e.g. to %26quot;Nussdorf%26quot; (last station of tram D) or cross the danube and go out to %26quot;Stammersdorf%26quot; (last station of tram 31), there shouldn´t be that many fans out there, just enter %26quot;Heurigen%26quot; into the search function, should give you plenty of info.

Or simply ask the receptionist in your hotel for a good tip, some local place around the corner, they should know a good spot, just be aware that we generally do not have such a tradition of watching sports outside our home somewhere in a pub on TV, most people prefer the home couch for that, at least until no.

Have taken your advice and we%26#39;re booked into the Wombat Hostel - it%26#39;ll suit our needs perfectly.

Thanks again for your help with this,

Its gonna be a bang-on party place, thats for sure, I know the two guys that run it, and evethough its not my absolute favorite normally - its gonna be party central for the event ! Good choice, and don´t forget the headache tablets ....

Headache tablets????? - Co%26#39;mon Fritz, it%26#39;s Scotsman you%26#39;re dealing with here....you need to sober up for these things to be needed!!!!! :-%26gt;)

|||

Sorry, didn´t see the location ... so you safe space with leaving the jocks at home as well, do you ? :-)

No, sure you will be having fun, I remember the Austria : Scotland in spring this year, I went there, and dispite the bullsh... show of some of our supporters, it was a great game and good craic afterwards in the pubs ! If the Euro becomes leike that as well, we will have a few great weeks !
