We will be visiting Vienna in early November fro the second time. Staying 4 nights and are looking for a side/ day trip to take. It should be no more than 1 hour from Vienna and easily accesible byt train or bus.
We are considering Bratislava but have been there before or Melk which someone suggested to us.
Any suggestions. This side trip will most likely take place on a Saturday.

Melk is a very nice idea, a wonderfull old benedictine monastery sitting on a hill overlooking the beautifull Wachau valley, famous for its library and the abbey church, there are regular trains going there from Viennas Westbahnhof, see the link %26quot;How to get there%26quot; on their webpage:
http://www.stiftmelk.at/englisch/index.html
Its also part of this organised tour, just depends if you like that kind of tour:

If you have had enough culture in Vienna, and might want to get yourself pampered for a day, I would recommedn going to BADEN, a small spa-town in the south of Vienna, that has natural hot mineral-water dwells, and a very nice nearly new spa center RÖMERTHERME with all kinds of pools, various saunas of all different kinds, massages, all kinds of beauty treatments ... Besides that, it has a wonderfull park to take a walk, little cafes, a casino, lots of typical wine-taverns .... You can get there with a small little coomuter train, that actually looks like a Vienna Streetcar, just thats its blue and yellow instead of red and white, which leaves Vienna from opposite the opera and rops you off about 60 min. later at the main square in Baden. Here is the link to the spa:

Thank You Fritz. We will check out Baden bei Wien. I assume you need to bring a bathing suit.
What is the center of town like ?

The town is lovely, it has a lot of old Villas from the turn of the century time, when the aristocracy of the old Austro-Hungarian empire came here to cure their illnesses, you can find a few pictures in the link.
Yes, of course you need a bathing suite for the pool, you can get a towel at the reception for a small fee, or just ask your hotel in Vienna if they mind you taking a towel from your room for a day.
When you go to the Sauna, pls. don´t forget that Austrians go their in finnish style, which means %26quot;en naturel%26quot; or simply naked. If you prefer to go there in your bathsuit or covered with a towel thats fine, but just don´t be to surprised if the people around you don´t wear anything and only use their towels to sit on them ! I had International guests feeling a bit strange over this especially as some sauna-chambers are always seperated for the sexes, but many of them are shared !

I%26#39;ve been to Baden and to Melk, and I think of the two I preferred Melk, for the historic associations of the abbey, and I thought the town was interesting and picturesque too. I didn%26#39;t really take to Baden - spa towns, on the whole, are kind of dull unless you want to do all the treatments (or hit the casino). Which many do enjoy - I just like libraries better!
If you%26#39;re abbey-minded, Klosterneuberg is also an easy trip on the Sbahn. And you might (hem hem) make a detour thru a Heurige on your way home ...
Grubby rol, prefers books to bathing!

Thank You again Fritz. No problem with the sauna. I know that Americans have a reputation for being overly modest and uncomfortable with nudity but it is not a problem for us.
Can I get more info on the commuter train ? Departure times ? Ticket info ?
|||
Thanks Roley. I would probably prefer Melk myself. However, Pat has the Arthritis and other aches and pains and the spa may be good for her. She really thought the ones in Budapest were very beneficial.
BTW - Do you know of any walking Pub tours in Vienna. We have been on them in Prague and, of course. London and they are a lot of fun. Great way to meet fellow travelers.

Hey, pubs, my specialty, finally somebody is asking for it ! :-) I used to work in one of Viennas biggest Irish pub every weeke´nd for a few years, and I just finished getting loads of Irish soccer fans throug Vienna before they went off to see their team playing in Prague and Bratislava ...
Unfortunatly, there are no organised pub walks in Vienna, some American girl tried that business last year, but as people already went completely mad on the first tour, and police and ambulances were needed at various spots during the evening, the project didn´t get beyond the first night. Pub owners weren´t too supportive of the whole thing as well, as it doesn´t really create stabile additional business and the regulars in the bars were already pissed of by it on the first night...
But if you are interested, and your schedule somehow fits into my work-roaster, I would not mind showing you around a few places if thats whats in your mind. free of charge of course !
Just get back to me if you are interested !
Greets, Fritz

Fritz,
Thank you for your kind offer. Not sure of our schedule. Will let you know.

Have decided on Melk. The Abbey looks very interesting and I have been told that the trip there is very scenic. Any suggestions for eating while there ?
Fritz - Did you get the message I sent you ?
