Hi Everyone,
My fiancee and I are going to Austria on our honeymoon starting the 20th of December and are spending around 10 days there. We plan to spend the initial 3-4 days in Vienna, esp visiting the Christmas Markets and roaming around the city.
We have about 5-6 days left and would appreciate some suggestions from you all as to what are good places we should be thinking about. We would like to spend them in a mountain/ski resort (might not do much skiing but would like to be in the mountains) that is scenic and also lively. We are thinking of renting a car from Vienna.
After much research, I am thinking of a couple of nights at Zell am see and a couple of nights at Innsbruck. I was also thinking of driving through the salzkammergut region and maybe spending a night at Hallstatt (visited it last year and it was beautiful).
Could you please let me know your suggestions? Are there any alternate places I should be thinking of? Thanks very much for your time and input.

You have done very good research!
I will now try to comment on your itinery:
1. 3-4 days in Vienna will be an excellent choice as the Christmas atmosphere is really unique and amazing. Very romantic too. I could also recommend some restaurants for romantic dinners if you want.
Hotel recommendation:

2. Then I would go to the Salzkammergut and also to Salzburg as Salzburg is a really beautiful city!
n the Salzkammergut I would recommend staying in St. Wolfgang - Hotel Landhaus zu Appesbach - or in the Fuschl area - Hotel Schloss Fuschl - instead of Hallstatt (i would go there for a visit only):

3. After visiting Salzburg I would go eiter to Zell am See (as you mentioned) or to Kitzbuehel - both are excellent places for skiing and you will have shops, restaurants, apres-ski, ...in both of them too. And they have a beautiful location as well:
- Zell am See:

Hotel recommendation:

Kitzbuehel:

Hotel recommendation:

Or in a village close to Kitzbuehel:

4. I think I would stick to Vienna, Salzburg, Salzkammergut and either Zell am See or Kitzbuehel and skip Innsbruck as you only have 10 days and it would be too much of driving.

Hi kingsubbu,
Like you we are visiting Austria for 10 days in July and I have done quite a bit of research which may be useful to you.
We are staying 4 nights at The Grand in Vienna... email them direct..they are lovely people to deal with..I have booked an exclusive room overlooking the Ring.Already blocked for us.
I then decided on 6 days at the Schloss Fuscl 15k from Salzburg. It is so central to so many places.
St Wolfgang, St Gilgen, HallStatt,Werfen,Ramsau for the viewing platform,Konigsee,Zell am See,Grossglockner road and of course Salzburg. Also thought of maybe a trip to Chiemsee also.
I am also considering going via Admont between Salzberg and Vienna to visit the Abbey there. Looks interesting.
With regard to Schloss Fuscl there is a way to get 1/3 off the standard rate for a three or six day stay..The discount is not advertised but can be easily obtained from Starwood. If you are interested leave a message through this thread.
For a fantasic review on the Schloss Fuscl property google....ubr schloss fuscl long.....its a great review.
Have a great tip.
Regards David.

Thanks so much Ulrike and David - I really appreciate your input.
Ulrike, I am having a hard time trying to decide between Zell and Innsbruck (both seem really nice) - if it came down to one, would you recommend either? what are some of the strong points of each?
Also, what is the chance of having snow ( we would very much like that!) at that time of year - around Christmas.
David, thanks for the suggestions - I have booked us into the Le Meridien at vienna (found a good deal via Starwood). The Schloss Fuschl looks incredible, but since we are going around Xmas I couldnt find rates below 500 Euro a night which is unfortunately over my budget. Could you please let me know how to get the discount using STarwood (I am a gold member)?
Regards
Subbu

If I had to choose between Zell am See and Innsbruck I would choose Innsbruck.
The differences are:
Innbruck - is the capital of the Tyrol and much bigger than Zell am See. Innsbruck offers much more distraction concerning sightseeing, restaurants, shops, ....
The small town of Zell am See is not really special itself, it is more its nice location at a lake and being surrounded by mountains.
But Innsbruck´s location is stunning too as it is surrounded by really high mountains.

I love the Penz hotel:

Very good views from the %26quot;360 Grad%26quot;:

I would do the following:
From Salzburg go to Kitzbuehel to see how a typical Austrian skiing resort is like (Kitzbuehel also offers more than Zell am See) and then go to Innsbruck - maybe stop in Hall on your way.
Ususally you will be able to see snow around Christmas.
For Salzburg another Hotel recommendation:
